Follow Up - Centos / Red Hat EL Broken 5.4 + 5.5, ** Alternative solution **
To the list: 1) Someone off the list (thanks!) offered to send me an RT kernel based on 2.6.23.X. So I thought why not try to build a standard / server type based on the standard 2.6.23 version. 2) Red Hat 6 Beta 2 is based on a similar starting point 3) I was not going to fix something Red Hat broke. They responded to me that they only support the configuration of the generic binary they

Centos 4.4 Install bug
To the Centos maintainers: We tried to install Centos 4.4 i386 (i686 / Athlon) on a Dual Opteron 254 Iwill DK8N MB, 1GB (4 x 256M) system with a 3ware 9500S-4 and 4 x 80 GB disks in a RAID 10 array. Both tries caused Centos to first kernel panic until we turned off IO-APIC in the BIOS. Both tries also only loaded the UP kernel and did not load the smp kernel on the machine. The smp kernel was

kernel 2.6.32-279.9.1.el6.x86_64 does not build from the source rpm's
kernel 2.6.32-279.9.1.el6.x86_64 does not build from the source rpm's using the UNmodified config file and following the directions explicitly. Previous kernels build fine from the same directions. A little help from the developers would be greatly appreciated. while building I get this output: c1: warnings being treated as errors drivers/base/platform.c:621: error:

Centos 3.4 3ware 9500S Floppy Boot Disk
We have created a Centos 9500S Floppy Boot Disk for installing Centos on a 3ware 9500S series controller that will allow installing and booting directly from this controller. This boot disk supports only AMD XP, MP and Opterons in 32 bit mode Centos 3.4 for the up and smp versions. We can also do a x86_64 version if required. Any interest???? If so we will post it to our web site. Thanks

CentOS as an internet gateway
I would add the below: -Recommend using CentOS 4.0 -Use squid rpm, no tar (this is for new users I'm guessing). -Recommend using etherape and iptraf (available as rpms) for a graphical overview of traffic. http://etherape.sourceforge.net/ -Recommend the use of chkrootkit, and TCP Wrappers (at the least put ALL: ALL EXCEPT PARANOID in /etc/hosts.allow) to protect servers. -Provide some

CPU temperature?
Has anyone gotten lm_sensors to work on a CentOS3.3/RHEL3 box? I think I'm having CPU temperature-related problems, and wanted some way to monitor it. I believe lm_sensors does this, but can't seem to figure out how to get it to work. I already did "yum install lm_sensors" but when I run sensors-detect, it complains: Couldn't open /proc/bus/i2c?!? at /usr/sbin/sensors-detect

2 questions: batch file + R 1.8 on Red-Hat 9.0
Hi, I have 2 different questions: First: I would like to know what is the format of an input command file when running R non interactively on a unix machine. R< command.file Is there a reference somewhere where I could read on that? Is it just a list of the command we would enter interactively usually? Second: Is there anyone who had success installing R 1.8 on Red hat Linux 9.0. I am

RAID card recommendation
Hey all, After seeing the horrible lack of support for Promise cards in Redhat Enterprise/CentOS, I am looking for a recommendation for a good IDE RAID controller that is supported out of the box (i.e. I would prefer not to have to install via a driver disk). I would prefer ATA 133 over Serial ATA for now. Thanks! Sean

Error using the mi package
I'm trying to impute data using the mi package, but after running through almost the entire first round of imputations (which takes quite a while), it throws this error (I'll include the whole output prior to the error for context). Does anyone know what is causing it, or how I can fix it? More specifically, how can I tell what is throwing the error so I know what to fix? Is

benchmarking large RAID arrays
I'm just wondering what folks are using to benchmark/tune large arrays these days. I've always used bonnie with file sizes 2-3 times physical RAM. Maybe there's a better way? Cheers,

Getting kernel source for 2.6.9-42.ELsmp
Hello! I need to get an arcnet device driver up and running. Normally it appears to be distributed with linux, but not installed. So, I need to compile and install it, naturally. So, where is the kernel souce for 2.6.9-42.ELsmp? I can find kernel source for 2.6.9. BTW, I obtained 2.6.9 and tried compiling it, but all I got was *.o files and insmod: error inserting 'arcnet.o`: -1

And many such projects are non-profit or otherwise. Unless Debian plans to establish itself as a commercial player, they don't need to defend their trademark. In fact, the commercial

pci sata raid card
Using centos 4.2. Trying to install pci sata raid card, Pacific Digital QM-4300R10. Raid card box reads that it supports linux. raid software has rhel 4.0 dd image. I write to floppy and use linux dd to "try" install drivers on my centos 4.2. I see the card in the list that centos gives me after loading the drivers, but when I try to use them, it doesn't do anything. Nothing works.

How will fragmentation help Red Hat
Hi, As I found out yesterday, the fragmentation of the "Enterprise Linux" ecosystem just started to come true. I expect this is only the beginning and Red Hat may also start to completely hold back sources of non GPL software which is part of the "Enterprise Linux" ecosystem. I'm really wondering, how will this help anybody and how will this help Red Hat in the long run?

RE: pronunciation? -- loving CentOS doesn't mean you have to bash Red Hat
From: Martyn Drake <martyn at drake.org.uk> > When I did try that support, it didn't give me a favourable > impression. However, that's just my opinion. It's good enough that HP is losing lots of clients because HP (among other tier-1 OEMs short of IBM) is finding that Linux their support is sub-par. Even Dell and others are just farming support out to Red Hat. >

athlon64/opteron 8GB per CPU
I'm putting together a spec for a big(ger) memory x86_64 host, and I hope some of you-all can help. I'm looking for success stories of hardware that folks are using in production environments, preferably with CentOS 4, with more than 4GB of memory per CPU. I know there are lots of mobos out there that can do this, but I'm looking for what folks really have running. Call me

Sorting alphanumerically
I'm trying to sort a DATAFRAME by a column "ID" that contains alphanumeric data. Specifically,"ID" contains integers all preceeded by the character "g" as in: g1, g6, g3, g19, g100, g2, g39 I am using the following code: DATAFRAME=DATAFRAME[order(DATAFRAME1$ID),] and was hoping it would sort the dataframe by ID in the following manner g1, g2, g3, g6, g19,
