prop.test() references
Dear R-help,
I'm using prop.test() to compute a confidence interval for a proportion
under R version 2.4.1, as in:
prop.test(x = 340, n = 400)$conf
[1] 0.8103309 0.8827749
I have two questions:
1) from the source code my understanding is that the confidence
interval is computed according to Wilson, E.B. (1927) Probable
inference, the law of succession, and statistical inference.

ci.pd() (Epi) and Newcombe method
Greetings!
I suspect that there is an error in the code for the
function ci.pd() in the Epi package.
This function is for computing confidence intervals
for a difference of proportions between two independent
groups of 0/1 responses, and implements the Newcombe
("Nc") method and the Agrasti-Caffo "AC" method.
I think there is an error in the computation for the

Antw: Re: Confidence interval for the difference between proportions - method used in prop.test()
Dear Josh,
Thanks for your help!
Does your answer mean, that you agree the two methods should do the same, and what I was guessing, despite the small differences?
What I prefer about ci.pd is, that the help clearly says which method is implemented, which is not the case for prop.test. But I do not know who has programmed the function.
Best wishes

Confidence interval for the difference between proportions - method used in prop.test()
Hello,
Does anyone know which method from Newcombe (1998)* is implemented in prop.test for comparing two proportions?
I would guess it is the method based on the Wilson score (for single proportion), with and without continuity correction for prop.test(..., correct=FALSE) and prop.test(..., correct=TRUE). These methods would correspond to no. 10 and 11 tested in Newcombe, respectively. Can

prop.test.Rd References patch
Hi all,
Presuming that my reply on r-help this morning was correct, attached is
a patch file against the current svn trunk version of prop.test.Rd to
add the references for the methods.
Any corrections are welcome.

usermapping in 3.0b1
I was reading the release notes for 3.0beta1, which says this:
1) When operating as a member of a Windows domain, Samba 2.2 would
map any users authenticated by the remote DC to the 'guest account'
if a uid could not be obtained via the getpwnam() call. Samba 3.0
rejects the connection as NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE. There is no

I have been using Samba for years and am at my wits end with this problem.
I have 3.0.0beta1-1 installed (actually, it's the latest Debian unstable

I have rejoined my machine to the domain (did this by creating the account

Network lockups with win98 and samba 3
Hi all,
This is a new install on a network comprised of win98 and xp machines. I'm a
relative newbie to samba and getting some errors and problems. I would much
appreciate some advice on my setup.
The setup is samba-3.0.23,1 running on FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE as a windows
server replacement and with clients mostly running dos POS software on win98
machines and other dos and windows software on

APC Smart-UPS 1000 RM USB problems with newhidups
I'm trying to use a rackmount Smart-UPS from APC with the USB connector, and
I'm running into some issues. They seem to stem from the fact that the
Report Descriptor is much larger than any other UPS I've seen (61939 bytes).
Here is the quick fix that I put in libusb.c after getting the HID
descriptor, and before getting the Report descriptor, which seems to work
okay:

ippon smart power pro 1000
Hi!
I'm having problems connecting Ippon Smart power pro 1000 UPS to nut via usb
under FreeBSD 7-stable
The UPS uses megatec protocol and works fine via RS232 (UPS has RS232 and
USB connectors)
When I connect USB /dev/uhid0 is created. Tried port=/dev/uhid0 - doesn't
work.
Kernel rebuild w/o option uhid.
On connect I get 2 devices /dev/ugen1, /dev/ugen1.1. Tried both of them.

Tripplite Smart Int 1000 - wrong numbers
I do have some of the more modern protocol documentation for Tripplite
from the tripplite engineers, if someone is working on updating the
Tripplite drivers.
Their protocols are horrible.

APC Smart-UPS 3000XL: Compatible/Any good?
Hello list.
I'm contemplating buying new batteries and putting an older APC
Smart-UPS 3000XL back into service. Would that work well with NUT? Any
drawbacks to consider?
Thank you,
Tobias
