"Failed to open the service control manager" -- is it OK?
I'm trying to use WINE on openSuSE 10.2. I used it before on SuSE 10.0,
do no remember what version was it, but I used WineTools to configure
it (I actually need only IE).
Now I'm trying version wine-0.9.27 SuSE RPM, from winehq site. I
understood that winetools should not be used anymore (I actually tried
it with wine-0.9.24 from openSuSE 10.2 without too much success).
Now, the first

MemoriesOnWeb and wine
In http://www.edsupport.cc/mguhlin/archives/2007/08/entry_3550.htm,
Miguel Guhlin asked how to install MemoriesOnWeb and its recommended
codecs under Wine, so here goes. All I did was translate his instructions
to wine-ese.
1. Download xvid for windows from http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html,
install it the obvious way:
$ wine XviD-1.1.3-28062007.exe
2. Download lame from

wine hangs on first run
I'm using a fresh install of Fedora Core 5 with the RPM install of Wine
0.9.12.
When I run winecfg, it says "wine: creating configuration directory
'/home/vince/.wine'..." as I expect it to. Following that is many lines of
"Font metrics" progress with a few "fixme:font" messages.
Nothing seems too unusual. But, when it gets to "Font metrics:

Strange Wine Error
Hi all - I recently upgraded my openSuse10.2 distro.
Before the upgrade winecfg, winetools, and wine in general "just worked".
However since the upgrade - I keep getting this error message:

Here is what happens when I try to run the wineprefixcreate:

Media Player 6.4
I'm trying to install Media Player 6.4...I get up to the point just where
install is saying, installing foo (foo varies, sometimes it says
DirectSound, other times Codec Preinstall, or DirectEx). Then I get an error
that says:
"Unhandled exception <hex> at address <hex>. Do you wish to debug it?"
I am running FreeBSD 4.4. Wine version is Wine release 20010824.

Unhandled exception launching games from Steam
So after years of running a 'pure' Linux machine, I finally decided to install Wine so I could play some of my old games - and it's been a disaster. Using either Wine 1.5.3 or 1.3.3 trying to launch Half-Life Source results in nothing happening, trying to launch from the commandline gives this stack trace:
Code:

anomalous wtmp logging bug
I've noticed rather strange wtmp logging behavior in sshd. Can anyone
confirm or solve the following:
Once a user authenticates themself to sshd, sshd among other things
records the login in the wtmp, which `last` reads. However, sshd logs
hostnames which are longer than 16 characters instead of IPs like normal
programs would. As a result, I have useless entries such as:

duplicate log entries
When i use openssh's UseLogin option (i.e. set it to "Yes").. i get
duplicate entries in the wtmp file (when i type 'last' it displays
users who logged on via sshd twice), like this:

tempest ttyp4 1cust126.tnt5.ta Sat Mar 11 22:33 still logged in

issues submitting a search form
Hello to the list and thanks to Aaron for the cool software.
I''ve been fooling around with Mechanize and Hpricot for a couple of
days and from the docs I''ve read, the following code SHOULD work but
doesn''t. I''ve tried the same code on a couple of different sites and I
get the same exception for each. Any pointers or suggestions are
appreciated.

nsd 4.0 EAGAIN loop in sendmmsg(2)
On NetBSD 6.99.28-CURRENT, nsd 3.2.16 works fine, however nsd 4.0.0 is
spinning chewing CPU. The logs show:
Nov 28 23:07:00 xxx nsd[466]: sendmmsg failed: Resource temporarily
unavailable
ktruss shows it getting EAGAIN from sendmmsg(2) over and over again.
According to the man page:

Can I play any Win7 game on Linux?
Hi, I am apprehensive about buying the Windows 7 for my new desktop PC ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig_b41uOQCg ) and pay more than 100 euros for it. I don't have enough money before I get the student loans after New Year 2012, and I was wondering if I could get Linux somewhere today or before Christmas holidays.
Before I decide, tell me, can I play any Win7 game I like on Linux, by

selecting a form
What''s the best way to select a form on a page with Mechanize if the
form doesn''t have the "name" attribute? I''m already familiar with the
page.form(''myformname'') syntax but this doesn''t? work with forms that
have no names.

functions for special na handling?
hi,
i need a function that can replace na's in univariate ts objects with a value interpolated linearly
using the adjacent non-na values. for example, the function i need (myfun) would do the following
> x <- ts(10,11.4,NA,12,9.7)
> y <- myfun(x)
> y
10 11.4 11.7 12 9.7
i can code an na.action method myself to accomplish this, but has someone else already coded routines

SAMBA rejecting passwords from Win98 clients - the fix
There have been several postings about this phenomenon and we too
fell into it when we introduced Win98 clients onto the network.
Somewhere on the web I found the answer:
By default Win98 sends passwords to a server encrypted, and by
default SAMBA compiles with encrypted passwords switched off.
Therefore the password one types in from a Win98 client is received
by SAMBA in an encrypted form.
