need creative solutions for number portability
I'm presently working on an office move and evaluation of telecommunications services needed at the new location. I'm presently wrastling with an issue related to portability and geography between landline carriers. Presently certain people within the organization are hopelessly in love with our 909-822-xxxx number(provided by pacbell/att). As that number is presently provisioned it

UK call initiating party hangup control on analog home lines
I suppose this is rather an informative e-mail than a question. However if people had similar experiences or could comment what the differences are in other countries or with business analog lines, it would be interesting. It took me a week until a BT engineer was sent to my home home, since BT tech support was unable to provide information about the problem. Problem: Calling party controls how

country code list
I was wondering if anyone has put together a comprehensive list (that is reasonably maintained) that lists country codes, landline numbers, mobile numbers, etc. The particular requirement is for a dialplan to know what is going to be charged to whom. For example, mobile and landline rates are the same in the US the US has a unified numbering plan of 1NXXNXXXXXX, while the UK has: 441xxx

NPA NXX data
HI all - I know, slightly off list, but.. I'm looking for a NPA NXX database with City and State. Actually it's for an Asterisk routing app I'm working on. I see several vendors that want a few bucks to those that want an arm and leg. I expect this is published somewhere by some government agency, but Google hasn't got me to it yet. OT: Do You Know What the Problem With CDMA is?
It's OT but I thought it was funny enough to point out seeing this is a telephony list...... world wide data.....like the 'world series' of baseball if you ask me :-) Regards, Dean Collins dean at cognation.net +1-212-203-4357 (New York) +61-2-9016-5642 (Sydney) http://www.Cognation.net <http://www.Cognation.net/profile> ________________________________ From:

Sort of OT: PBX vs CO
As I am working my way to understand Asterisk, I have a couple of questions that hopefully someone will answer. I know there are differences between a PBX switch and a CO switch. Can Asterisk completely replace and act as a CO switch? Are there any telecoms out there using Asterisk as a CO switch? If so, how well does it work? If not, why not?

Happy Wednesday Morning SMS question, slightly OT
We all mostly know that * as well as various SIP phones support SMS. While the final setup is somewhat of a mystery, there are reports of those lucky souls who have it working. We also know that in order to send an SMS to a mobile phone, we need to connect to some SMS message center and get the word out that way. Now, here's the new (?) element: How can I *accept* messages on my

Question about SS7
Hi, I have read about SS7 recently and learnt that it is a signalling protocol used in PSTN for call management, setup, etc. The thing that I don't understand is how SS7 plays a role in VOIP. When I make calls between landline and Asterisk via PSTN, I don't need to do anything with SS7. Is it because the SS7 signalling is already done by Asterisk already? From the prespective of

Mobile Number to Mobile carrier mapping
Hi Folks, Is there a way to find out the mobile/landline carrier name based on the phone number? For example, who is the mobile carrier for (415)2345678 I had heard about some query but just don't remember how/what? Thanks in advance. International Caller ID?
We have antiquated caller ID schemes here in Australia. We barely support numbers from other local carriers, let alone OS ones. Certainly no names either.

Asterisk as SMSC to GSM-Phones
Hello all, i today have searched on the internet about a solution to let asterisk act as a SMSC (Short MessageServiceCentre) to deliver SMSes directly to GSM Phones. I only have found some cases with use of an extern SMSC (i.e. by the Mobile Net Provider) Is there a possibillity to do that, or ist asterisk only able to send SMS to analog phones? Do you have any idea or hint for me? Thanks

Emerging dilema? DID forwarding meets SMS
We have a number of DID's that do the standard VoIP tricks: ringing multiple locations, findme-followme etc. What is happening more and more is that customers call those DID numbers, and draw the reasonable conclusion that they are calling mobile numbers because they literally can HEAR that the called party is on a mobile. Consequently many of those customers draw the conclusion that they

PRI timing settings
Hello, I wrote earlier today about a new PRI installation in the Caribbean, where all outbound calls are functioning fine *except* calls to Sprint phone numbers, which get rejected immediately as "busy". The telco has been working with their switch manufacturer and took the output of "pri show span 1" from me and came back with this: ----quote--- Please check your timers

an unwanted chroot() call
Hello, I am trying to run rsync under my own userid on a high-numbered port. The problem is that, when I use the --daemon option, I get an error saying that a chroot() call failed. My config file does *not* have any chroot call in it. How can I avoid a chroot() invocation when running as a normal non-root user? Thanks in advance for any advice! -- Daniel Ortmann, LSI Logic, 3425 40th Av NW,

Problem with busydetect and cell phones
I have a very strange problem I'm hoping someone has encountered already. I've scoured the internet for an answer to this one. My phone company provides no disconnect supervision. Hence I'm forced to use the busydetect feature. I have a TDM400 with two FXO ports. If I call from an internal extension to a landline and then hangup the landline Asterisk detects the busy signal

CentOS Mirrors and Adjacent country groups
CentOS has developed our own mirrorlist and isolist applications and inside this application, we have some countries that we shift to other countries and we also have some country groups defined. The purpose of these groupings is to have adjacent countries grouped together for applications like fastest mirror and others. I will put here what we currently have and ask the community to vet the

PBX hacked: why hundred of calls to the same number ?
Hi, Someone reported me that from a PBX on which someone gained fraudulent access, he could observe hundreds of calls to the same destination number. For curiosity's sake, I'm wondering why would this happen (dialing the same number over and over) ? Some special numbers generate here and there revenues for callees (and not for callers). Beside sharing interests with the callee that get
