911 and lawsuits
Just curious if any of the Asterisk installers are doing anything special to protect themselves from a possible lawsuit caused by 911 failure during a Asterisk/computer crash? I realize that any traditional PBX or even a phone line can fail but, anything running on a computer is probably going to be less reliable than most PBXs. Anybody requiring customers to acknowledge and sign any kind of

Speex
Dear Speex developer(s), We are currently in the process of evaluating speech codecs for the transmission of wideband speech (fs=16kHz) at bitrates lower than 32 kb/s. Speex is a contender for this task. Practically we would have to port Speex to a specific 16 bit DSP if we would go for this. We should be able to handle this. But we would like to ask for your opinion regarding patent

SCO & R
I apologize if this has been addressed before; recently I read an article in Forbes which discussed how SCO was going after companies that have been using Linux. The article made the point that the ideas behind GPL are under attack precisely because no one is making sure that the code being put into the freely avail. packages isn't owned by someone else. Here's my question: Is R

Wine distro with MS WOS look and feel
i think that if a distribution with MS WOS XP and 7 look and feel based on Gnome and Ubuntu or debian is released a lot of people would migrate. People is comdortable with what they know, even Gnome is easy to use, they like Control panel, Documents and Settings and Start vuttons from MS WOS. If program Icons should be in desktops, an start button with a control panel, My documents and so one,

YAML inconsistencies...
I figured I''d post here before submitting a ticket, but I''m seeing some confusing stuff when dealing with YAML now. I was using it to freeze objects in my database, and so i had some data already around to mess with. I upgraded both Ruby (1.8.3 -> 1.8.4) and Rails ( -> 1.1RC1) and this junk started. I''ve outlined the problem in two pastes, which I''ll

Theora patent question
Does the reason Theora is relatively safe from patent infringement lawsuit have more to do with it actually not being encumbered, or is it because its use is decentralized? For example, FreeType is not patent-free, nor is Linux, yet they succeed because on the one hand, they are open source, and those who maintain them do not guarantee anything regarding patents, it is up to each individual user

Suggestions for reliable DID provider for Canada, USA and Europe
I posted the same question on asterisk-biz mailing list but didn't have much response. So I am posting it here now. I need a good, reliable and stable DID provider for USA, Canada and Europe. I prefer to have fixed monthly rates for incoming and outgoing calls and not per minute charges. Features I need to get with DIDs are: 1. my own caller ID and caller name on outbound calls 2. multiple

RedHat forks OpenSSH?
It has just come to my notice that Redhat is planning to ship a forked version of OpenSSH. The change goes beyond the usual patches applied to RPMs in the build process: Redhat have built their own OpenSSH tarball and are using that in their source RPM instead of the official release distribution. If you are interested, have a look at the openssh-3.9p1-7.src.rpm from the Fedora development/

Patent issues, what features we can't use?
Hi everybody, As the Asterisk community is getting larger and larger, I was wondering that the features which are provided in Asterisk and are programmed by the open source community under GPL, or GUIs like FreePBX which also come loaded with wonderful features and uses same Asterisk, are they anywhere violating any patent laws? Most of the features work the same way as Nortel, Avaya and other

btrfs questions..
Hello ! I'm very interested in btrfs development and I have general questions about it. Please accept my apologizes if they are dumb as I'm new to this area, and I just want to learn.. 1. Like the btrfs name implies (b-trees fs..) I guess that it works basically like WAFL (and ZFS), is that right ? 2. Are there any big differences between btrfs-wafl-zfs or only small ones ? 3. NetApp

config file locations
Greetings; I found pdf user manual which explains a few things that might help. However, for a ubuntu flavor, the various .conf etc files seem to be in /etc/nut. But this pdf says they are in /usr/local/ups/etc, and yes indeed there are some there, with the .sample files being owned by root, and the rest are user 503, whoever he may be. Are these just a sample storage in case one needs to
