Re: CentOS and SL, together? -- GPL, LGPL, kernel and user ...
From: Johnny Hughes <mailing-lists at hughesjr.com> > Nope ... I can't build that with GNU gcc and against GNU glibc and > release it ... sorry, no OpenAFS :( ??? Actually, you _can_. You just can't link it into the GPL kernel program. [ I'm not posting this to cross you. But someone correct me if I'm wrong. ] There is nothing in the GPL that prevents a GPL

CentOS and SL, together?
From: Lamar Owen <lowen at pari.edu> > Referencing SL3 and CentOS 3 (as I haven't run SL4 as yet) there were some > scientific applications and some Java stuff, eclipse for one, You do understand the redistribution issues with Java, correct? It's a Sun problem (a typical thorn for Red Hat in general), not a Red Hat one. > part of cluster suite for another, included. >

Re: CentOS and SL, together? -- attributing statements to me (that I didn't make)
There's nothing like asking someone to "give it a rest" while taking the opportunity to make fun of them. Lucky for you (and the list), I can laugh at myself, because I can seem comical at times. But in all seriousness, just remeber to hold us all to the same standard. And we are all responsible for what we say and how we say it, and I'll never claim to be better than the worst

IBM is praised while HP, Red Hat and Sun are demonized. Companies have their agendas, and we need to be _cautious_. lanyrd site for useR! 2012
There's now a page on lanyrd ("the social conference directory") for useR! 2012 in Nashville: http://lanyrd.com/2012/useR/ its basically a site for making social mini-networks for conferences, so people can post up links, share photos, list talks, etc. If people going sign up then it'll look a lot better than UseR! 2011, where only three people seemed to have attended - but

A quiet Samba ??
Hello Family, Our sysadmin at work demands that no one have any Samba projects other than the single one on our network due to the "NOISE" that is emitted by Samba. [question] Can I still use the current 2.2.2 with my little test setup and not fall prey to the order to "cease and desist" Samba ? It's one Solaris-8(Intel) and Win2000 and Win98, three total machines. --

Licenses GPL and LGPL
Hello, I am new to Cortado and I am very interested in playing video in some of my Java applets using the Theora decoder. I would like to write a LGPL library to use the decoders in Processing (see processing.org). I prefer LGPL over GPL because it allows a wider usage of the library. The core libraries of Processing are released under LGPL as well. I would like to use com.fluendo.plugin and

Re: CentOS and SL, together? -- attributing statements to me (that I didn't make)
From: Dag Wieers > Bryan, stop generalising and dramatising. What dramatising? At some point, several people decide that anything they dislike was said by me. Several other people said far more negative comments about CIPE than myself. Those comments have now been attributed to me. I purposely avoided making it about whether or not CIPE should or shouldn't not be included, just why it

Is R GPL or LGPL (or can I write a commercial front end to R)?
Note I'm not asking for any legal advice here obviously, simply what the intention of the R foundation is with regard to allowing commercial connection to R. I've looked at various threads on the r-devel archive and it looks like this may have been discussed before, but as far as could tell, not to any great resolution, and not, it seems, specifically covering this angle. In the

a possible heads up wrt CERN experiment breaking SL 5.6
This may or may not be of interest to CentOS developers; if it is not or if it is redundant of your efforts to keep atop of what's happening, you have my apologies. Whether it is joint or disjoint wrt to the upstream code is not known at this point, but I have submitted a request for elucidation if CERN security allows. kind regards/ldv ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ewan

CyberPower SL-series
This code, added to drivers/genericups.h, supports the CyberPower SL series UPSes. I've tested with my 725SL - the online/on battery transition, and low battery status, and finally the shutdown signal all work as expected. *** genericups.h.orig Sun Nov 2 16:54:24 2003 --- genericups.h Mon Oct 3 13:49:00 2005 *************** *** 220,225 **** --- 220,234 ---- TIOCM_ST

Some issues with UPS Forza SL-1001
Hi to everybody. Some days ago, I bought an UPS by Forza Power Technologies, model SL-1001. This Forza SL-1001 is line-interactive, has 14,4 A/h charge and is rated at 1000VA. Before, I had a TrippLite Omni 500 (or something like that), a simple contact-closure UPS, and I used nut with the simple genericupsdriver, so I'm new with this type of UPSs. NUT doesn't list Forza as a

R on HP-UX, again: modreg.sl fails, 1 arith test fails
I want to report the progress of my attempts to get R running on HP-UX with gcc: Firstly, I could work around the PIC problem by leaving out all the lib stuff (I rebuilt gcc with --enable-share, but this (alone) did not help), e.g. the line gcc -shared -fPIC -o ctest.sl ansari.o fexact.o kendall.o ks.o prho.o swilk.o -L/usr/local/lib -lg2c -lm -L/lib/pa1.1 -L/usr/lib/pa1.1 -u main

how to move forward/undo/revert/fix re: a failed CentOS 5.5 to SL 5.5 migration ...
For various reasons which seemingly fail the necessary/sufficient tests with the benefit of hindsight, I attempted to migrate a shell machine which is the beach front from which I work (not a production server) from CentOS 5.5 to Scientific Linux 5.5 yesterday. Karanbir is quoted on this list as having said something like: "All that you should need to do is install centos-release, remove

YAPQ (Yet Another Patent Question)
Looks like the mpeg gestapo are frantically at work cracking down on mpeg projects. Several important projects (tsunami mpeg, gogo, faac, etc) were shut down by the jack booted patent nazis. Since FhG, mpegla, etc plan to start charging royalties on everything even remotely mpeg-related very soon, I expect a lot of interest is going to shift to Vorbis. And soon thereafter, I expect FhG to attack
