Dual-boot with WinXP, CentOS already installed
Hi all, I'd like to deploy a solution with dual-booting systems where CentOS 5.3 is already installed and WinXP will be installed to a separate disk. I found http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_linux_and_windows_xp_linux_installed_first.htm?page=1 and it seems straight forward enough, although the description is for Ubuntu. The problem as I see it, is that the how-to differs from how

Problem with dual-booting soft-RAID
I set up IDE software-RAID on a test machine for testing the recover functionality. The problem is that it somehow won't boot after removing the first disk, although grub etc. seems to be setup okay. Here's some background: 2 disks hda and hdb RAID 1 setup: /dev/md0 (hda1 + hdb1) /boot /dev/md1 (hda2 + hdb2) / /dev/md2 (hda3 + hdb3) swap done with disk druid during initial setup from

Help on deleting partitions
Hi, I have this dual boot Vista-CentOS. I have one NTFS for Vista, and three for CentOS. I boot to both OS through grub. Unfortunately, I'm going to need the CentOS space for Vista :( :( :( So my question is: if I remove the CentOS partitions *from within Vista* with its tool for it, will I be able to still boot Vista ? Is grub going to disappear ? If so, will Vista replace it for its

kernel update doesn't update grub.conf
Just updated another machine to 5.3, everything fine, but grub.conf wasn't updated to the 128 kernel. It got a new modified date and the kernel is there, but the content wasn't changed. /etc/sysconfig/kernel contains the correct UPDATEDEFAULT=yes No errors in logs or during the update. No problem to boot with this kernel once added. This is the first time I ever see this happen. Any

Dual boot with Windows 8.1, UEFI
(apologies for the length - there are questions at the end...) I've been running Linux for 20 years, and done a lot of dual-boots. I know that's old-school now, but I run Linux 95% of the time yet don't want to lose a Windows system I've paid for - but I've never tried removing it from a system and reinstalling the same licenced copy inside a virtual machine. I bought a

Dovecot under brute force attack - nice attacker
Hi List, optimizing the configuration on one of our servers (which was hit by a brute force attack on dovecot) showed an odd behavior. The short story: On one of our servers an attacker did a brute force attack on dovecot (pop3). Since the attacker closed and reopened the connection after every user/password combination the logs showed many lines like this: dovecot: pop3-login: Aborted

Is it safe to run only the XEN kernel on dom0 host?
Hi, I have an issue with my XEN servers, in that when I do a yum upgrade, it upgrades the kernels, and then updates the grub.conf file to boot with the normal Linux kernel, and not the XEN kernel - and I tend to forget to update the grub.conf, until I reboot and see XEN isn't running. So, is it safe to remove the normal kernel & kernel-development, and only run the XEN kernel? This is

My server won't boot (grub looping - stage2)
Hi, This morning one of my servers (centos 4.5) refused to boot. The console shows a lopp message grub loading stage2... I've been able to boot from the install CD choosing the rescue option. I can chroot /mnt/sysimage with no problems and even started the services (network, mysql , httpd etc). How can I solve this? I've followed the manual (

Missing grub functionality on CentOS 5
There's grub 0.97 on CentOS 5. The manual at http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/index.html says it is for 0.97. However, it mentions for instance a program grub-set-default that is not present in grub-0.97-13.2. It also mentions grub.conf options savedefault and fallback. Are these available in the CentOS grub? I tried with savedefault and it does not create a

[Xen-users] xend (12, ''Cannot allocate memory'')
I''m getting the error: xend (12, ''Cannot allocate memory'') From the command line after the Dom-0 goes through a period of heavy memory usage. I don''t have any hard numbers on how to duplicate it, but I''ll give you the steps I''ve gone through to duplicate the problem. First, some information about my setup. It''s a new setup, and has

Partition vs disk images
I realize this might be one of those religious topics, but is there any good rule of thumb as to how to setup storage for a Xen domU? Without really knowing any better, I''m basically going to make a disk image of the OS and the create a ''data'' partition on my raid 5 volume for each virtual machine. This is for use at home, so in reality it probably doesn''t

Going back to old kernels?
As the latest 4.5 kernel (2.6.9-55.0.12.EL) is unstable for me (crashes about once a day) I want to go back to the rock solid kernel that I had before the update (2.6.9-34.0.2.EL). If nothing else then to confirm it's not a kernel problem. Are there any current packages that might not work with this older kernel? As kernels don't get updated but installed the old kernel is still there

grub.conf and /proc/cmdline
I have a grub.conf (below) with pci=nomsi, also /proc/cmdline and dmesg | more do not show the pci=nomsi. How can this be? there are no strange characters after quiet and before pci=nomsi. sendmail and cups gets installed although not chosen in kickstart file
I setup a kickstart file that contains only @core and several packages explicitely listed. postfix is listed, sendmail is not. And there's no package where I would think it needs cups. Nevertheless, after the install I now have postfix *and* sendmail on the machine and sendmail even being enabled. And cups is installed. How can I find out what forced them (and probably many other unwanted

Strange message at boot time
Hi, I'm usually booting all machines here with 'vga=788 quiet' options in menu.lst, so I see what services start, but it's not too verbose at the same time. One message that puzzles me is the very first one after GRUB starts init: "Memory for crash kernel (0x0 to 0x0) notwithin permissible range." Anyone knows what that means? Niki

kickstart and grub parameters
Hey list, I recently started working with kickstart. It is awesome! I really had no idea how easy it would be to use. I do have one strange issue, that's really not that important, but that I'd like to figure out. I like to watch all the kernel boot messages go by in text mode by default, and when I've set up a box in the past, I've modified grub's menu.lst file to remove
