G.723.1 codec
Hi, Want to do some experiments with the G.723 codecs - where can I download the 723 source code for Asterisk? I know there are some ongoing discussion regarding patents and license fees for the g.723 but I have some hardware on which I only have the 723 and need to test it privately. Thanks! Fraunhoffer claims patents on other formats
Here in the uk, to get a patent on anything, you have to prove that the patent is not obvious and that there is no prior art. If there is prior art, then a patent cannot be given, this is why people patenting stuff have to keep it a secret until they actually have the patent, otherwise it is considered to have been released into the public domain. Once something is in the public domain, nobody

Patent issues, what features we can't use?
Hi everybody, As the Asterisk community is getting larger and larger, I was wondering that the features which are provided in Asterisk and are programmed by the open source community under GPL, or GUIs like FreePBX which also come loaded with wonderful features and uses same Asterisk, are they anywhere violating any patent laws? Most of the features work the same way as Nortel, Avaya and other

Is Speex realy patent free?
Well, apparently, no pure software solution can be patented (hardware can), least that's what I saw on the national news here in the UK 2 weeks ago. Is this just anti-Ogg FUD?
I was recently talking to a friend of mine who produces what's widely referred to as "techno", music that's heavy on electronically generated loops and effects, samples, and has plenty of bass. He doesn't like ogg for a few reasons - he sent me a rather long email, and I've stripped out the nonsense from it (he has some technically irrelevant reasons for not liking

G.729 patent in France
Hi all, I am building an Asterisk PBX with voicemail and music on hold functions. An ISDN BRI line will also be available and G.729 IP-phones will be used. Are there patents rights applicable to France? Which licence could I use and how many ones are required (only one per phone or also for voicemail and MOH)? G.729 pre-compiled binaries and Asterisk 1.2.x.
Asterisk 1.2.24 seems to crash repeatedly under any substantial call load (and sometimes without a substantial call load - just one SIP leg is enough to do it) when using the G.729 pre-compiled binaries from: http://asterisk.hosting.lv/ As per: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Asterisk+G.729+Licensing Time to crash is variable, but seems to require at least an hour of production performance

G.723.1 and Asterisk
I have a Cisco ATA 186 working with h323, and G.723.1 codec, but when it makes a connection to a PBX phone, connected to Asterisk by a Digium E100P, don't use G.723.1 codec, the command "oh323 show info" indicates G.711 for it. Anyone got an idea if Asterisk translates G.723.1 to ISDN channel ? Thanks, Rafael Mayor Rafael Mario Olivieri Comando de Comunicaciones e Inform?tica Dpto

Codec translator problem (g723.1,ilbc => alaw)
Hi, I cannot get SIP channel working with folowing codec configuration: [sip] disallow=all allow=g723.1 ;I need this codec between sip phones (BT100) allow=ilbc ;Use this codec to others Calling between BT100 SIP phones is OK - asterisk makes native bridge (with g723.1) between them. When I'm calling from SIP to other channel (iax,zap,...), asterisk is not able to chose right codec

FYI: G723.1 Licensing Prices
Licensing info for the G723.1 codec, direct from the holding company that licenses the codec. http://www.dspg.com/technology/LicensePricing.html As you can see they want a LOT of money. This is why I doubt there will ever be G.723.1 codec available fro Asterisk. -- BTEL Consulting 850-484-4535 x2111 (Office) 504-595-3916 x2111 (Experimental) 877-552-0838 (Backup Phone)

Theora patent question
Does the reason Theora is relatively safe from patent infringement lawsuit have more to do with it actually not being encumbered, or is it because its use is decentralized? For example, FreeType is not patent-free, nor is Linux, yet they succeed because on the one hand, they are open source, and those who maintain them do not guarantee anything regarding patents, it is up to each individual user

Optimized Codecs for Blackfin DSP
Dear Jean, The source code for G.729 can be download from ITU for free. Also, some developer can do yourself as open source G.729 codec without any help. In this case each who use this codec which source code is free and open source must pay, but not to the developer. troll or truth ?
Hello, I was discussing on the mplayer/mencoder ML about transcodingfrom Divx to Theora. I got these kind of answers: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.mencoder.user/280 Of course I understoud only 50% of what he said, as well as I am not really used with codec and video glossary... But I generally understoud his opinion. What to think? I would like not to believe him, espacially when

Independent implementations?
Hullo, When people ask me what Vorbis's license terms are, I usually tell them that the bitstream format is in the public domain, that the reference libraries are licensed under a BSD-like license, and that the example programs are licensed under the GNU GPL. (Note the distinction between filespec and implementation here.) Meanwhile, Theora.org's FAQ doesn't say anything about the
