Playing GSM files in Windows
For the archives... In trying to play GSM files in Windows (Windows XP for me, but in general) I found no help on Google, so when I figured it out I thought I would post it here. Q: How do I play GSM Files in Windows? A: Use Quicktime, it supports the GSM audio format directly. Andy Farnsworth farnsaw@stonedoor.com

Text to Speech on CentOS4
I am setting up a laptop (Sony VAIO PCG-4?) for my learning disabled son (age 11). I have previously used MicroSoft 2Kpro and XPpro / Office 2K platforms for text-to-speech applications as that is what most commercial LD Assist software is written for. However, with MS now requiring that one inventories ones entire computer software configuration with them before getting updates to their

Asterisk with a laptop with built-in Intel 537 modem
I have * working on my Sony Vaio PCG-FX120 laptop. I am trying to get * to recognize my internal PCI Intel modem as an FXO port. I have modified wcfxo.c in order to identify the PCI modem properly. Based on output from dmesg, wcfxo didn't recognize the modem until I inserted the proper vendor and device IDs into wcfxo.c and re-compiled. Note that the error message from "modprobe

HEADSUP: USB da(4) quirks disabled for 4.9 and 5.2
If you have any of the devices listed below, please test with a recent -stable or -current. They will stop working in 4.9 and 5.2 although old behavior can _temporarily_ be enabled by adding "options DA_OLD_QUIRKS" to your kernel config. If I don't hear from anyone, they'll be going away permanently after the releases. -Nate #ifdef DA_OLD_QUIRKS /* Below a list of

Centos5 and X respawning problem
I just installed CentOS 5 on a Sony Vaio V505 (PCG-V505DC2P) and it worked perfectly. A full yum update also worked fine. The user made various changes to it over the weekend, and how I'm faced with trying to undo endless "INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes" error messages. I've spent half the day googling various answers. init 5 will not

heteroskedasticity-robust standard errors
I am trying to compute the white heteroskedasticity-robust standard errors (also called the Huber standard errors) in a linear model, but I can't seem to find a function to do it. I know that the design library in S+ has something like this (robcov?), but I have not yet seen this library ported to R. Anyone know if there is already a function built into R to do this relatively simple job?

Sipura SPA-841 auto-answer support [patch]
Sipura has implemented auto-answer in version 0.9.5 of the SPA-841 firmware. However, it is implemented via the Call-Info header, which Asterisk stable doesn't currently support. The attached patch implments a quick hack to support the Call-Info header from the Dial() application by way of setting the CALL_INFO variable. For example, the following macro can be used to dial up a single

small world models?
Hi, I've searched the archives for a discussion on the use of R for developing "small world" or "scale-free" network models but have been unable to dig anything up. Is anyone working on these types of models using R, and if so, have you found this language amenable to their development? thanks, matt farnsworth

Looking for a commercial version of an IAX2 Softphone
Hello All, I have been looking for a commercial version of an IAX2 Softphone for Windows but the ones I have came across (i.e. Iaxcomm, Iaxphone, Diax) do not seem to have an updated version since April 2004 in some cases. We looked at Firefly but we sent emails to Virbiage/Freshtel with questions and could never get a response from them. Has anyone got any recommendations for commercial

Re: Pivot without copy
Hi Eric, Thanks for the info. I see the value in this, but it isn't quite what I was looking for. Basically what I want to do is to switch between snapshots quickly. For instance, I am currently working on designing a HA SQL implementation with failover. So right now I have 5 VM's running postgresql as a replication group. I am trying a lot of different things and often have to take a

Icecast2 / Ogg / oddcastDSP / Winamp2 Constant Prebuffering
Hrm, yes it does sound like a bug in WinAmp. Even if it does prebuffer, the length counter should be going beyond 0:01 since you've obviously been listening longer than that after the first second. =P (I don't think the counter resets after buffering, but I could be wrong.) Can you see if you can duplicate it by getting someone else to tune in to the 'cast with WinAmp?

Regressions with fixed-effect in R
Hi there, Maybe people who know both R and econometrics will be able to answer my questions. I want to run panel regressions in R with fixed-effect. I know two ways to do it. First, I can include factor(grouping_variable) in my regression equation. Second, I plan to subtract group mean from my variables and run OLS panel regression with function lm(). I plan to do it with the second way because
