Can Synaptic be used successfully on CentOS 4.4 instead of YumEx ? Are there any issues using Synaptic with the CentOS 4.4 repositories ?

Several months ago, I installed MYOB and everything seemed to be working. Using F8 kde. Now I'm getting similar results as the above complaints. I think this may have happened after the updater installed updates. Various tabs don't work in the MYOB and it's printing blank pages for receipts and invoices. Other printing from Myob seems to be ok. Using HP network printer and cups.

I saw the link someone posted to SL (Scientific Linux) yumex rpm's. I grabbed the SRPMS, changed some references from SL to CentOS in the spec files and rebuilt the RPMS. I managed to get yumex up and running by manually configuring yumex.conf. What is the use of the yum-utils and the dozen or so utilities? Are there any docs? (Bearing in mind my hack may have damaged the SL installation)

Hi, I was using yum, which was working very well. Then I decided to try yumex, and installed yumex, which again worked fine. But, after that, when I came back to use console yum, it started giving error messages. So, I removed yumex and tried, in vain. Then I removed yum, and installed it with rpmforge repository. The docs in http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/docs/ do not reflect yum of today ie the yum plugins. Where can updated yum docs be found? By browsing lists such as fedora-devel, centos one can see how the plugins have "stumbled in" but newbies/anyone wanting to pickup on the new features has nothing to read. I am trying to get off the plus kernel. Hasn't helped yet, and my MadWifi does not work with it. So I used YUMEX to remove all of the plus kernel cruft that I could see. I rebooted. ONly the standard kernel was listed in the boot menu (good sign). Start up Yumex, and it is showing that the plus kernel needs updating. Nothing on the regular kernel. Just yum update behaves the same.

Which is better? Why? I know yum is the official update mechanism here and in Fedora Core, but that doesn't make yum better than up2date any more than Windows NT was better than OS/2. I think I found one of my setup problems. I followed instructions at: http://atrpms.net/install.html And now I see that the information shown there to put into yum.conf (that I put into yum.repo.d/atrpms.repo) is only for FC, not for RL5 (thus Centos 5). What do I use in my atrmps.repo to get it to access the RL5 directories?
