"could not connect to host - localhost"
Hi All:
I'm running Mandrake 8.1 (downloaded) and the install went fine.
Configuring Samba however is another story. I get the message "could not
connect to host - localhost" on the Linux box. I cannot see the network
from the Linux system. The Linux system is visable from Win'98SE as are the
shares but I cannot access them "password is incorrect".

Rd files must have a non-empty \title
Hello everybody,
I'm trying to install a package I have built. This package contains three
scripts with various functions (S3 as well as S4 classes)
I run at first the package.skeleton command with:
> package.skeleton("affyAnalysis", namespace=TRUE, code_files =c("defS3.R",
"defS4.R", "qc.R"))
affyAnalysis is the name of the supposed package and

Wikis etc.
I feel that as long as people continue to provide help on r-help wikis
will not be successful. I think we need to move to a central wiki or
discussion board and to move away from e-mail. People are extremely
helpful but e-mail seems to be to always be memory-less and messages get
too long without factorization of old text. R-help is now too active
and too many new users are asking

Input appreciated: R teaching idea + a way to improve R-wiki
Hi all,
I will be teaching a graduate-level course on R at CU Boulder next
semester. I have a teaching idea that might also help improve the R
wiki page... I wanted to know what you all thought of it and wanted to
solicit some advice about doing it.
During the latter part of the course, students will choose a topic of
interest (e.g., hierarchical linear modeling), and show how to achieve
it in

Ajax fade effect
I have a list of categories, when I delete one of them, I want that item
to fade and then get removed. So I do the following:
1. home_controller:
def delete
@category = Category.find_by_name(params[:name])
@element_id = @category.name
Category.delete_all(["name = ?", @category.name])
end
2. delete.rjs:
if @element_id
page.visual_effect :fade, @element_id

List posting etiquette
Just a tag-on for the thread about list posting etiquette, etc., etc.
The following is a link to an excellent (if wordy) how-to-do-it-right
instruction manaual replete with links to other treatises on the
topic. The entire text of this document is emailed to the mailing list
on the 1st of each month. This is the Cadillac of etiquette manuals.

USB key problems on enterprise systems
Just came up with some interesting (read: frustrating) problems on
RHEL3 and RHEL4 today at work, and I've confirmed one of the problems
on my up-to-date CentOS4 system at home. I was forced into releasing
some RHEL3 systems to replace our aging RH9 systems without time for
adequate testing, and that leads to problems like these.
On our legacy RH9 systems, mounting a USB key is no problem,

Apache Tomcat/5.5.23
I have a new instllation of tomcat on centos. My $CATALINA_HOME is
/usr/share/tomcat5 and tomcat is running.
http://localhost:8080 brings up the tomcat page & one of the option is
"Administration". I would like to use this web interface and even give some
of the test webapp users ability to restart tomcat.

CentOS4 Loop at shutdown
Has anyone else encountered a loop and failure to shutdown on CentOS4?
This has occurred twice in the past month, but unfortunately I failed
to write down the looping messages. The only relevant problems I found
via Google reference raid controllers, and I have POI (plain ol' IDE).
Doh! Obviously I wuill need to record the errors.
My environment is run-level 5 with GDM, but I use IceWm

CentOS for commercial use
I'm a home user of CentOS (a desktop and a laptop) because I like the
quality of the product and I love the cost. I'm a great believer in
FOSS.
That being said, I know that some of you use CentOS for production
servers and (perhaps?) desktops as well. I've read at leat one comment
like "I have 20 CentOS servers."
My employer is a firm believer in RHEL - license costs are

<OT> RedHat support
As a parallel question to my thread about CentOS for commercial use,
here's a question I've been wondering about.
How many of you who have RHEL licenses and paid support licenses have
ever needed actually to request support? And if you did was the
support any bit more timely or accurate than community support for
CentOS or other distros?

Tomcat authentication via PAM (or other system methods)?
Is there a way to coax java services running under tomcat to use the
system authentication methods set up through PAM? In my case, this would
be users in the local passwd file or through smb to a windows domain.
I've added mod_auth_pam to get this effect with apache but would like to
also handle java web services.
