Manually mounting partitions in "linux rescue" mode
I boot from the installation DVD, with an already existing CentOS 5.5 system on my hard disks. I have separate boot, root, and home partitions. I have moved the boot partition and now I need to re-initialize grub from rescue mode. Attempting to use 'rescue mode" to automatically mount my system under /mnt/sysimage eventally fails with an error message, which essentially says

Found a problem-sample
Hello, I found a sample RC3 seems to have problems with. http://metalbanner.virtualave.net/answer.wav (884 KB) Artist: Blind Guardian Album: A Night At The Opera Song: Wait For An Answer <p>Just listen for the metallic sound quickly jumping from one side of the stereo-image to the other (seriously bad english, I know...). At quality levels < 4 the sound seems to be moved to the

Poor quality of low bitrate encoding
In testing, I have found that both MP3 and RealAudio 3(!) are much better sounding at bitrates from 8 to 40-something kbps than Ogg Vorbis. This definatly needs drastic improvents and I know that 1.1 will be focusing on improvements in those areas but that seems pretty far off(a few months minimum) which leaves low-bitrate streams sounding pretty bad. --- >8 ---- List archives:

Re: VM I/O performance drops dramatically during storage migration with drive-mirror

The elephant in the room: Oracle
So what does everyone else think of Oracle's announcement? http:// developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/25/2316221 I kind of think that they are going to be hurting RedHat (a valuable partner if you believe their deployment numbers). Oh silly, silly Larry. I guess the only hope that we have is that it actually increases mind share of RHEL and hence broader support for it (and

Alternative to laptop
I am considering buying a small, and therefore easily portable, computer as an alternative to the laptop I already have. Obviously it would not have battery, a screen, nor a keyboard etc. but more or less be an easily portable computing unit to move between offices where a keyboard and monitor(s) could then be connected. I want to run CentOS 7, later CentOS 8. The smaller, the better, however,

Is there plan to make R multithread?
Hello R Pioneers, I sometimes use R on a dual CPU PC runing Linux and find that only 1 CPU is used even when no other user/process competes for resources. Can we make R uses both CPUs to have the job done sooner? I know this is probably asking too much for something that is free. Has anyone else thought about it? Thanks. Ming Chow

Optim function with meta parameters
Hi guys. I have a dataset with 4 columns. In the first and second column I have the same qualitative variable referred to different teams of people. There are 10 teams in total and they compete against each other to perform a certain task whose result is stored in the third column for the team recorded in the first column, and in the fourth column for the team in the second column. For example,

Windows on Xen rant....
Hello all, Windows......................... I have installed a Windows Server 2003 fully virt domU with the GPLPV drivers. The network settings reset on every restart of the domU. Weird STOP errors keep popping up.... Was I naive to think you can run a Windows server on Xen? Are any of you guys doing it successfully? Am I better of just installing windows server 2k3 on bare hardware? Just

Newie Questions
Hello, I'm new to asterisk. My company is opening a new office and I'm seriously considering using Asterisk for the phone system. A couple of questions: How does Asterisk compete with the Avaya IP Office or the Nortel BCM systems? I have purchased a Polycom 500 phone but I'm having trouble getting it setup and talking to Asterisk. Is there somewhere that has SIP phone setup

Localhost imap server fails after upgrade from 2.2.33.2-1 to 1:2.3.2.1
Hello Stephan, I'm interested to see this get fixed (and ideally one day for it to be really easy for people to set up Alpine so that it competes fairly with heavier GUIs!), but I do not know that I am qualified to help (beyond light testing). Is there someone from Alpine on this thread? The second (askubuntu.com) link you give is my own question (and answer, based on Aki Tuomi's
