Authentication error with corrections
Hi, Curtis (and the group),
I tried setting up Dovecot's auth default section as you described, with both authdb and userdb set to 'passwd.' It let the authenticated session start on the POP side, but I got consistent authentication failures on the client side that the passwords didn't match.
I don't have any more time to mess with it this morning, but I will make it a

Setting up a 'rootless' server - user and auth_user cannot be the same
I am trying to follow http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/Rootless to set up
a personal dovecot server that does not use 'root' and does not need
to change uids/gids. I'm trying to set it up on a Cygwin personal
system.
The problem I'm running into though, the directions say to set "user"
and "auth_user" to be the same in this setup. However when you do
this, Dovecot

pop3 authentication problems: Still got 'em...
Fellow users,
This is just a heads-up to let the list know that I'm still unable to get ANY sort of pop3 or pop3s authentication to work with Dovecot.
Just as a sanity check, I set up an entirely separate system, running FreeBSD 6.1 production, postfix 2.3, and Dovecot 1.0rc2, as a testbed. I got the exact same problem that I had with the NetBSD 3.0 production server, specifically that

pop3s Authentication Issues, Continued
Fellow Dovecot'ers.
I tried something tonight that I should have done a while back: Turned on verbose logging in the authentication section. I'm still unable to get the mail client I'm experimenting with (Pegasus) to complete a pop3s connection, in that I still get an indication of a failed password.
However, at least I'm a little closer to understanding the failure itself.

PAM Error on POP3s auth? And apop?
Fellow Dovecot'ers,
I've -almost- got Dovecot completely functional, and I will add that it works just fine for non-authenticated POP3.
The problem begins when I try to use authentication for same against the system's /etc/passwd section. This is the error message that comes up in /var/log/maillog

Cannot connect from XP to Samba: Password prompt repeated
Fellow samba folk,
This one's making me want to tear out what little hair I have left.
THE *NIX PLATFORM: FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE, Samba 3.3.8.
THE ENVIRONMENT: Small domain, Windows 2003 servers and XP-pro based workstations. The FreeBSD server is a member server in the domain, so at least that works.
THE SYMPTOMS: This is bizarre. I can, using mount_smbfs on the FreeBSD side, easily

pop3 auth problem solved!
Fellow techies,
OK... This is going to go down as one of those "D'Oh!" moments in the world of computers. Boy, do I feel dumb...
In short: I found the problem. One miserable little line in 'dovecot.conf' called 'auth_default_realm =.'
I had this set to 'bluefeathertech.com,' thinking it was necessary to do so. I was wrong, at least for my environment,

OT: SpamFiltering (used to be: ATTN: Keith)
Kind of spawns an interesting side topic though.....
I recommend SpamHaus.org for a good blacklist....
Easy to integrate into most mail servers and you can't beat free...

[ATTN] To all users of unicode_hacks
TO everyone who is making use of unicode_hacks!
I have made irreversible changes to the plugin so that the routings
are no longer overloaded. To call the character-bound routines, you need
to use the "chars" or "u" accessors, as outlined in the docs
http://julik.nl/code/unicode-hacks/index.html
and in this blog post by Thijs:

Wiki link / Attn:samba dev team, web maint..
The Wiki page has been SSL-only for a few days to a week or so.
[perhaps this is by design, I don't know - but it is different than it
was a week or more ago.]
But the link to it from the main samba.org page is wrong and the suggested
link doesn't get you to the wiki either. [It goes to CIFS.ORG.]
Most of us can find our way - but it probably needs addressing
sometime soon.

Attn Ivo. Re patches 15347 and 15376
Ivo,
Your patch number 16347 uses _fseeki64 when _WIN32 is defined.
Unfortunately, MinGW (or at least the Linux -> Win32 cross compiler
I'm using) defines _WIN32 but isn't aware of _fseeki64.
I have therefore modified your solution a little and commited it
as rev 15376. The code now looks like this:
#ifdef __MINGW32__
return fseeko64(f,off,whence);
#elif defined

Attn Fedora Rawhide users
http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/gitweb/?p=libguestfs.git;a=blob;f=0001-Workaround-for-usrmove-in-Fedora.patch;hb=HEAD
I have added this patch (not upstream) ^^
This is a workaround for a rather misguided feature called 'usrmove'
which was just dumped without notice into Rawhide, 3 days before the
F17 branch, while everyone was away at FOSDEM.
I still haven't got libguestfs to build
