Intermittent timeout issues
Greetings list!
We've been experiencing an intermittent issue in which none users are able to log into the mail server for about 10 to 20 minutes.
This issue first appeared on our CentOS 4 box running dovecot 1.2.11 after upgrading from the stock version 0.99. The issue persists after migrating our users to a CentOS 5 server - also running version dovecot 1.2.11 but now in the 64-bit

Re: dovecot Digest, Vol 21, Issue 24: vacation messages
Normally, the vacation message works with the default mail server (MTA).
In my case, I use the vacation program. Postfix delivers to the local
mail user and if they have a .forward with the vacation info on it gets
called.
For a truly virtual setup that does not require unique uids
on the filesystem there is gnarwl. Gnarwl is a program written in C
that does vacation messages for virtual

dovecot.index.cache 1/3rd of INBOX size
I've noticed that my dovecot.index.cache file has got very large (24MB,
which is more than 1/3 of my INBOX size). I've tried deleting (well,
renaming) the dovecot.index.* files, and re-opening my INBOX, and the
new dovecot.index.cache is only 90KB so far.
I'm using dovecot-1.0-stable and mbox format. My mail_cache_fields and
mail_never_cache_fields are set to the default.

1.0-test75 and roadmap for v1.0

Keywords are finally stored in maildir filenames and listed in
"dovecot-keywords" file. It should be possible to just rename 0.99.x's
.customflags file to dovecot-keywords (but it can't be renamed back
after modification).
Also fixed another uid/sequence mixup bug with setting keywords in
general (in mbox too).
Fixed SHA1 checksum generation with

Trying to build custom Python 2.4.4 RPM
I'm trying to build a custom RPM with a standalone Python 2.4.4 in the /opt
directory to keep it isolated from the stock version of Python in CentOS
4.4. The end goal is to use it in conjunction with yet-to-be-built RPMS of
the current versions of Zope and Plone.
The spec file I've constructed allows me to build a RPM successfully, but
when I try to install the RPM, it complains:

miugrating mail to new server
Hi All,
I've just a new server to help with migration of our email, the old
email server is using mbox and the new is using Maildir. I've
managed to some user mail migrated fine. The new server is only a
temp server as I have too many users to migrate easily in one go(Also
I want to nuke the current mailserver, remove SuSE and install Debian
on it). So what i'm doing it

cutting everything after @
Hello,
I am migrating one server to dovecot. The only problem is, that users
have logins with @domain as part of their user name. I want to use pam
auth (for other reasons, if only for dovecot, I would use mysql, but I
need the same password db to be used for other services, like samba).
Is there a way to allow this type of login? Just cut everything
beginning with @. I can change the

Script to convert mboxes to maildirs?
Does anybody know of a script of a simple method of
converting mbox mail stores to maildirs? I'm moving
from an old pop3 system to imap and after installing
about half our office with mboxes have found that mbox
does not support subfolders which some people like to
use.
Is there any simple way of converting? I can go to
each individual account and "manually" convert swaping
data

Plugins for Dovecot at FreeBSD 6.0
Hi
I met problem developing plug-in under FreeBSD 6.1.
First I tried to use internal plugins like quota and acl but I got:
IMAP(xxx): module /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib01_acl_plugin.so:
dlsym(acl_plugin_init) failed: Shared object "nss_dns.so.1" not found,
required by "imap"
This library doesn't exist on FreeBSD 6.1 Same story when u mention any

mysql
Hello,
Does dovecot require mysql in order to work? Fedora rpms are claiming
mysql dependencies.
I'm sure you're aware of the long-lived arguement of postgresql v. mysql.
If it wasn't your intention to force this, then please snarl at Red Hat.
If it was your intention, then grrrrr!
Thanks for this product. I like it for it's speed and stability.

Looking for atime reset...
I find rsync an excellent tool when I need to move multi-gigabyte filesystems, because I can do most of the copying during the week - then a quick cleanup sweep in our 4 hour outage window.
I do need to somehow get the atime's to copy over, because as it stands now I loose the age information (which we will soon be using for auto-archiving) on things I copy with rsync.
Would it be that hard

Read-only mail folders
Is it possible to have folders on read-only partitions in Dovecot
1.0-stable?
We have a NetApp fileserver which would probably be accessed via NFS
(though iSCSI is possible) and which stores readonly "snapshots" of
every directory accessible as .snapshot (but usually hidden from the
operating system). It would be very nice to set up a "snapshot"
namespace something like

Logging And Environment
Hi All,
Couple easy questions:
1. How do I view what environment my app is running under (i.e
production / testing / development) - I''m not sure what RAILS_ENV is
set at, how to I take a look at it?
2. Somehow (?) I have turned logging "off". I''d like to have it back
on :s I have files called production.log, test.log, server.log,
development.log in /myapp/log/ but

Namespaces and subscriptions
I've got a problem with subscriptions in 1.0-stable when migrating from
UW-IMAP.
I've modified the SUBSCRIPTION_FILE_NAME entries as suggested in the
Wiki http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration and included the "~/mail/" etc.
hidden namespaces.
The .mailboxlist files contain entries like "~/mail/somefolder" and the
clients have "~/mail/" set as a prefix.

imap disconnects on my account only
Talk about personal problems!
I am using dovecot-0.99.13-4.FC2, and everything has been going fine
for months. Earlier this afternoon, Thunderbird's status pane would
say 'Sending authenticate login information...' and I would no longer
receive email.
When I checked with others, they were fine and dandy.
I tried kmail, evolution, and even tried webmail. All had connection errors.

Multi-Track-Single-Logical-Stream Ogg-Vorbis (mogg) vs Multi-Track-Multi-Logical-Stream Ogg-Vorbis
Hi All,
I am in the midst of developing a library for easily recording multi-track
audio for a court recording system. Well, it can be used for anything, but
this is its first intended use.
The idea is to simultaneously capture/compress/archive 8 to 16 mono
sources (microphones) in an Ogg container using Vorbis. Then later, be
able to play back only selected logical streams, or
