Layout() coordinates and drawing lines / segments
Hello,
I am trying to wrap my head around the coordinates systems associated with
the layout() function ...with the end goal of simply drawing a decorative
line in the upper margin of my figure, which is composed of three plots.
My output is defined as this:

Set the grid.layout programmatically?
Hello all:
Does anyone know if the grid layout function can be
set dynamically? For example if I have a column that
will be changing as new data is added monthly I would
like grid to detect the new data and create another
row or column for the new plot on the same window
instead of adding the new layout manually. The code
below shows a grid.layout of hardcoded two rows and
two columns.Thanks

maImage() and layout()
Dear all,
Trying to produce 4 maImage plots (marray package) on the same device (2 on
the top and 2 on the bottom) with the layout() function or the split.screen()
function, we are facing the following problem:
it seems that maImage() does nt care about any of these 2 functions, and
plots only one image at a time.
Maybe this is inherent to this maImage() function, but we did not find
anything

plots: layout + subtitles
Hello,
I want to create a figure that consists of a collection of 16 graphs on
4 rows. I am using
nf <- layout(matrix(seq(1,16), 4,4, byrow=TRUE), respect=TRUE)
boxplot(...
to create the layout of my 16 graphs. It works really well. However, I'd
like to add sub-titles that would apply to each row of 4 graphs. More
specifically, I'd like to have something like:

Combining expressions and objects within labels
Hello all,
I am an R novice and I have a simple question and hope somebody can help
me out.
I need to place several labels in a plot, this labels are some kind of
text and also some objects (which come from some more complicated R
calculations).
In one of this labels I'd like to place a superscript, however I cannot
find a way to place both the expression and the object in the same

How can I obtain a boxed sweave output within Latex?
This question is about including code and R results in Latex trough
Sweave. It works fine and is of great help. Now may question is how to get
the code and the output computed by R within a frame in Latex.
Does any one have an idea on that. I tried \fbox, etc. but it seems to
have problems with the code chunk generation of Sweave and I ger errors.
I would appreciate any suggestion. I'll

Testing if a variable is specified within a function & adding TRUE/FALSE options to functions
I have 2 related questions about functions.
1. I am writing a function to plot data from a time series with the form
myplot<-function(data, d1,d2) { }
Where d1 and d2 are two dates in a time series. The idea being that if no
values for d1 and d2 are entered then the function defaults to plotting the
whole time series, else it plots the data for the interval specified by d1
and d2.
I am

Creating grid graphics with grid.layout
Hi,
I recently created a function which uses grid with a viewport
constructed with grid.layout() to position four plots on a plot device.
My question is what's the best way to programatically traverse each
element of the viewport?
The grid is 5x5 and the four plots occupy positions (2,2), (4,2), (2,4),
and (4,4).
Here's the viewport code:

TeachingDemos question: my.symbols() alignment problems in complicated layout
Hello,
After usefull suggestions by Paul Murrell, i have been trying to use
my.symbols to plot arrows of varying angles on my plot in order to create
a time series of wind direction... however,i have been unable to figure
out how the allignment of symbols works...
below i have included a simplified code that illustrates my problem:

Trouble using grid.layout in Sweave
Hi!
I am troubled by Sweave which I want to use in order to plot graphics which
I build up successively by the use of grid.layout. Here is the code:
<<fig=TRUE,label=evolDist,height=6in,width=3in,pdf=FALSE>>=
## combined plot via grid viewports
grid.newpage()
pushViewport(viewport(layout=grid.layout(2,1)))
vlay <- function(x,y) viewport(layout.pos.row=x, layout.pos.col=y)

Thanks Frederick.
Mark, if you have any examples to share, they would also be gratefully
received.

grid layout scaling viewport width based solely on height
Hello all,
I'm trying to write a function that produces a main plotting region
with several square plots along the right side. Ideally the size of
right side plots will scale only with the height of the entire plot,
yet never overlap with another secondary plot. The following two
snippets get close, however, as I resize the plot horizontally the
right side plots (green squares) get smaller

getGraphicsEvent() alternative for cairo graphics device?
Hi
The current status is that I am keen for people to contribute some
testing code (see https://bugs.r-project.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=16951)
There were also some getGraphicsEvent() changes/fixes suggested by
Richard Bodewits (cc'ed), for which I am also seeking test code.

complex plots using layout()
Dear r-help,
I am trying to plot several scatter plots with marginal histograms on
one page. Ideally, a page is equally divided into 4 figure regions.
Within each figure region, a scatter plot with marginal histograms will
be plotted.
I followed Dr. Paul Murrell's code released online to successfully plot
the scatter plot with marginal histograms. The code applies "layout()"

getGraphicsEvent() alternative for cairo graphics device?
Hi
Just taking a bit more of a look at this today (currently fixated on
making sure I can build some good regression tests).
The best thing you can do is to keep reminding me like this :)

layout.show()
Dear r-help,
Please, be so kind, tell me what does mean the parameter of layout.show()?
I use R 1.6.2... Windows NT 4.0
Unfortunately I cannot understand phrases from the help
"n: number of figures to plot."
what figures?
"`layout.show(n)' plots (part of) the current layout, namely the
outlines of the next `n' figures."
what figures?
