Shapefile
Hopefully the attachment will make it this time... Hi: I am practicing with the attached shapefile and was wondering if I can get some help. Haven't used 'rgdal' and 'maptools' much but it appears to be a great way bring map data into R. Please take a look at the comments and let me know if I need to explain better what I am trying to accomplish. library(rgdal)

Sorting Numeric and Character Data
Hello, I have what seems like an easy question to answer, but I'm struggling with it. I have a set of categorical data that I am reading in, looking something like: "category" "result" "A" .234 "B" .123 "C" .564 "D" -.452 "E" .112 "F" -.106 I'd like to plot this twice on two separate dot charts, once

Histogram Bar Spacing or Border Width
Is there any way to control the spacing between bars in a histogram, or change the border width (I'm assuming the hist() function, though alternatives are welcome)? I'm interested in changing the visual spacing between columns in a plotted histogram. The general effect I'm looking for can be accomplished in barplots using the "width=" parameter, but I have not been able

X11 problem with remote login via SSH
HI all! Strange problem that began occurring in last few weeks. Centos 5.4, up to date. I sometimes log in remotely via ssh using "ssh -X" and read mail via mutt. Now and then I want to use balsa instead. This has always worked (for years) though it's kinda slow... but in the last few weeks it has begun failing and spewing errors like this, repeatedly, apparently forever until I

Centos 8 on Macbook
Folks I am trying to install Centos 8.1 on a MacBook Pro. I have a bootable USB stick with centos-8.1-boot (which I think is the equivalent of a netinstall), and it boots. However, when I select the storage option, and choose to make more space on the SSD, go through the confirming dialogs, the installer complains that it was unable to save the information to the disk. LD_ASSUME_KERNEL library issues CentOS 5 x86_64
I'm trying to get the Syspro/Encore MRP software running on a new CentOS 5 x86_64 system which uses an ODBC package built with old glibc/errno libraries. I have this same software running on a Suse Linux Enterprise 9 SP3 system using LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1, but when I try this on CentOS 5 it results in many unidentified libraries including libc.so.6, librt... etc. My guess is that there are

nmbd - is it running or not...?
Hi, I've just started setting Samba up so I'm at quite an elementary stage! I'm using Samba 2.2.8a on a Solaris 7 server. I can connect to Samba ok when using localhost from the console. However when I try and use DOS from a Win95 test machine I get a message saying the computer name was not recognised. This points to the nameserver not running (I'm using nmbd provided with

xen + vlan: works but...
Hi, I''ve setup a Xen server host (suse, xen 3.0.2) with vlan as follows: server-eth0 <-> vlanXY <-> vbridgeXY <-> domU-eth0 That is: vlan''s are managed in the physical host (for better security). The setup is working, i.e. I can connect to/from domU-eth0 from hosts in the same vlan. The problem is: it seems I loose "many" packets.

mind to bitter, interest to joy, tolerance to macro, speech
Sooner or later, the same The teacher to the student in his class at the effects of collective speak, told a story. The story is: a sheep, and leave the sheep eaten by the Wolf. Finish the story, the teacher asked: "the classmates, if this sheep honestly stay in the flock, it won't be the wolves eat, isn't it?" A little boy stood up and replied, "of course. But, it is

Samba and Win viruses
Hi, This may seem a fairly obvious question but I need to check it out. It's also fairly urgent so I apologise that I haven't made a good check of the FAQ's or mailing archives. We have a Solaris box with Samba installed. We are on a campus network where boxes that are infected are blocked from the network as a security measure. We have had our server blocked as it is probing port

Help with lattice graphics
Hi, I like the formatting and the appearance of lattice plots. But I have not succeeded in gettting the right format in my plots with the lattice package in one of my applications. In?the code shown below, I start by constructing a general data frame and show my attempts with the lattice package commands. After that, I use the graphics package and show the kind of plot that I want to get. I would
