Happy New Year to everyone: I have followed the instructions at shorewall.net/samba.htm. I''ve restarted the samba server, shorewall, rebooted, everything. And from my network I cannot browse available shares on the firewall (192.168.1.1) telnet 192.168.1.1 138 fails with connection refused, which I don''t understand. All other open ports respond with a string. -- Philip Bondi, home: +1 -416 621.9177, pjbondi@SystemDatabase.com pager: +1 -416 376-2922

If not, review the Samaba documentation here: http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/ 3.4 Diagnosing the Server http://hr.uoregon.edu/davidrl/samba-diagnose.html#server> telnet 192.168.1.1 138 fails with connection refused, which I don''t > understand. All other open ports respond with a string. As far as I know, telnet isn''t a normal utility to use for testing Samba configurations. -- Mike Noyes <mhnoyes @ users.sourceforge.net> http://sourceforge.net/users/mhnoyes/ http://leaf-project.org/ http://sitedocs.sf.net/ http://ffl.sf.net/

The fact that telnet says "connection refused" shows that there is an underlying networking issue. This is before any application-level program is able to do anything at all. Telnet cannot be used for testing Samba, but it can be used for testing tcp network connectivity. Of course, it can''t be used for testing udp. -- -Mike Schwager listguy@schwager.com
