Enterprise rails app with - about 100 tables
...approx. 100 tables. Possibly more. Oracle is the DB. There exists a legacy schema I that i will use some of. So far i have created a small bit of the app, approx 10 tables. Im using webrick on my local machine. The Oracle DB is on its own server. My boss has noticed that its not really that zippy, there is a small delay between eeach screen. There is no reason it should be slow. There aren''t any images and the html is clean. Looking at the development.log file tells me that the DB requests are taking very little time < 0.1 sec. Has anyone got any ideas what i can do? or w...

find_by datetime question
Hi, I was wondering if any of you Rails/SQL ninjas knew of an elegant way to grab from activerecord all the rows that are within an interval of the current time (say in the last week). For instance, if there''s the created_on datetime column, is there a zippy way to use find() without SQL? It seems like the Ruby DateTime object doesn''t really do intervals for numerous reasons. Thanks, Ben

Giving folks access to Win2k
...my old desktop to a friend who has no computer. The upside is that means I have room to setup my old-old desktop, which happens to have Windows 2000 on it. It''s a dual Pentium-II 400 with 512mb of RAM. I installed the Ruby 1.8.6 one-click on it, and it already had VC++ 6 on it. Fairly zippy, actually. What I would like to do is give certain people access to the machine. Preferably, just a command line login. Unfortunately, the only things I saw online for command line logins were commercial products. I thought about firing up the telnet service, but it seems to require NTLM authe...

Outlook 2010 woes
...Client sends the following: ID ("name" "Microsoft Outlook" "version" "14.0") 8. Server sends an ACK ... and then there's this very curious four-second delay. 9. Server then sends out new CAPABILITIES, and everything proceeds thereafter as normal and zippy and fast. Does this shed any light on the subject? smbmount cannot browse large NT directories
This is a problem I get with various versions of Samba, up to and including 2.0.7. (The version shipped with Debian.) I have an NT machine (4.0, service-pack 3 using NTFS) exporting a filesystem to Linux through smbmount. Specific directories are not browsable. By that I mean that "ls *" comes up blank, however if you know the filename, "ls foo.txt" will still find the

prototype/script.aculo.us ecosystem
Recently errtheblog (http://errtheblog.com/) put up a nice post about jQuery. Putting aside all the assertions about cleaner code and fewer lines of code than with Prototype, the one thing that struck me from his (and others'') writing and from direct inspection is this: jQuery seems to have a more of an ecosystem surrounding it. That is, more plugins, widgets, locked-and-loaded

cert issues, puppet agent applying configs, problems oh my!
So I''m new to puppet and I''m having a bear of a time just getting a test server going. I installed puppet and the puppet client via yum on CentOS on AWS, so that saved me some time. I followed a few various blog posts about getting everything set up and applying a file, etc. Now I am trying to install a module (puppetlabs/apache) and it''s failing miserably for me. I

I just cant get bridged network to work. I am running centos 4.3 on x86_64 (amd 4800+) and trying to emulate and centos4 i386 image. The image works its just not on my network. Jerry

Misbehavior with Dovecot and Mulberry
I'm having a bit of misbehavior wherein Dovecot seems to refuse to cooperate with my Mulberry MUA. By and large, everything works great. I can move mail back and forth happily. I can compose a note and copy the outgoing mail to my Dovecot "Sent" folder using my default Mulberry settings. But if I reply or forward a mail, I get a Mulberry error popup saying that it
