Printing from W2K clients
Hi, I have Slackware 8 Linux Box with Samba-2.2.5 and HP LJ 1200 printer shared by samba (with LPRng). The problemm is: when printing from W2K clients users cannot change print options (like portrait/landscape page orientation, number of copies etc). When printing from Win98 clients all is ok. Could someone help vt with this problemm? -- Sincerely, Elman Efendiyev elman@megacom.com.ua

Trying to recover erased logs
...ght well still be physcially on the disk, particularly if the filesystem /var/log is on, isn''t too busy. So if you act quickly, and /var/log filesystem is quiet, some blocks that still contain old valuable log info, might still be on the disk. If /var/log is part of (eg.) /dev/hda1, then yuou might try dd if=/dev/hda1 | grep "connect from" I have seen this command executed on a system compromised through imapd. The logs were erased, but the command picked out the ip address of the attacker which was recorded by tcp_wrappers when he connected to exploit the old imapd vulnerab...

ocfs issues with 9.2.0.3
I am starting to see a few issues with OCFS and 9.2.0.3 RAC on redHat Linux AS 2.1. Wondering if there is anyone out there experiencing similar issues... a few pointers to the issues.. 1. OCFS read/write performance is way lower than a read/write to a raw device.. i can give you some comparison numbers.. 2. Writes to shared disk with ocfs would get locked up by one server.. it doesnt have to

Auto-restart/auto-shutdown feature idea
Here are some thoughts about a possible enhancement to samba. Let me know what yuou think. Whenever I want to re-start samba, for example to upgrade it, there always seem to be people logged in with files open. It occured to me therefore that an auto-restart feature may be useful. To implement this though we need to know when it is safe to re-start samba: 1. When there ar...

Using LVM snapshots to backup NTFS partitions for windows guests
Hi everyone! I''ve been reading this list for a while and I''m thinking that the best way to do backups is using LVM snapshots as discussed here several times. The problem is that when i use a LVM logical volume as windows disk, windows writes the partition table onto the LV so the LV itself is not a partition - it''s a whole disk. lvm/device-mapper does not create the

fitting Markov chains
I need to find a computationally simple process for the movement of interest rates. In this simplified model, an interest rate can have 3--5 possible values, and its movement is characterized by a matrix of transition probabilities (ie, it is a Markov process). I would like to estimate this process from a given set of data. For example, let the interest rate time series be: 7 3 8 2 5 9 6

...est that even if you overcome this 1st problem you should at least try to move the backup procedure to linux if you are doing anything other than full backups. The reason is that both the archive flag and in some situations the time stamp of files and dirs are messed up by samba until now. Ofcourse yuou can't expect any DOS/windows incremental or diferential backup to work under this situation. Sory if I made things worst.
