nbdkit / mingw support
Eric: Yifan Gu has posted a few patches for mingw support. My comments below. https://github.com/gyf304/nbdkit/commit/a37c4ca6546dfc4e96e305af97b62e5a9d6174ca * I think the SHARED_LDFLAGS idea is good. I pushed a slightly different take on the idea here: https://github.com/libguestfs/nbdkit/commit/1d63...

GUI Input Forms
I have been inputting my data into text files using a text editor on a Windows 2000 PC. I would like to create a front end form that does validation on the fly to reduce the errors in my input and make it possible for family members that are not into computers to help me out with data input tasks. I assume that my form program would translate the input into a text file which I would then read

uninstall problem
Under Windows 2000 I installed R 1.4.0 some time ago. I then installed R 1.4.1 just now. If I hit the Windows Start button select Programs from the menu that appears select R from the menu that appears then I get a menu with R 1.4.0 R 1.4.1 R 1.4.0 Help R 1.4.1 Help Uninstall R for Windows If I select Uninstall R for Windows it uninstalls R 1.4.1 but I want to uninstall 1.4.0 .

[PATCH nbdkit 0/3] msys2 support for review
I pushed a few of the msys2 patches upstream. I changed the way that $(SHARED_LDFLAGS) works so it's more to my liking, and the others were pushed unchanged. Three patches remain which I'm posting on the mailing list for proper review. Rich.

Inconsistency among mean, median, max, var
I found a strange inconsistency: If m is a matrix and d is a data frame then - mean(m), median(m), max(m) and max(d) all return a single value but - mean(d) returns the column means - median(d) fails - both var(m) and var(d) return the variance covariance matrix You pretty much have to experiment to figure this out since much of this behavior is not readily obvious from the help files.

Newsgroup
This morning I had 37 messages from the r-help list in my mailbox. I think its becoming excessive for an e-mail list. I wonder if whoever looks after this list could either move or gateway it to a usenet group? That would also eliminate the need for special purpose archiving and searching facilities since the site: http://groups.google.com would automatically provide that. That site also

Hodrick-Prescott-Filter as smooth.spline
Could someone, please, write me, how to compute the spar-value for the smooth.spline-routine to get the same HP-filtered time-series with a parameter lambda for a function (see mail "Hodrick-Prescott-Filter example" from ggrothendieck at yifan.net): hpf <- function(y,lambda{ eye <- diag(length(y)) d <- diff(eye,d=2) z <- solve(eye+lambda*crossprod(d),y)} ? Second, is there a connection between the parameter lambda in this function and the value $lambda of the smooth.spline routine? For annual time series with smooth.spli...

Upgrading an installation of R
I have installed R 1.4.0 on Windows 2000 and would like to upgrade to the newest version of R. I am scared of messing this up badly and would like to know if I should: - uninstall my current version first, or - just install the newer version without uninstalling the current version Do either of these work? If both work, which is preferable? Will I have to reinstall various packages that I
