FYI: power consumption MP3 vs. Vorbis
Hi, I'm using a Samsung YEPP 6 for some time, but I recently got surprised: It seems that listening to Ogg (=Vorbis) empties the batteries much faster than listening to MP3. Both files have about the same bit rate. I did not make electrical measurements, but I think things are as they seem to be. Did anybody make similar e...

filter performance/optimization questions
hi i''m using htb + u32 filters, and i was wondering if there is something one can optimize at this stage. i have a lot of filters (~ 50.000 / interface, and there are two interfaces), and around 4500 classes / interface. the traffic going through this machine is something around 210-230mbit/s at 50kpps. as you can imagine, the load is pretty high. in fact (as it''s a dual xeon at

omit /etc/issue message when running rsync
Is there a way to omit the text printed out by issue(5) on some systemes? Like what --no-motd does for motd-texts.

Samb and Ldap groups
Hi, After some carefully editing of pdb_ldap.c I have managed to get a list of groups from the LDAP directory if you are root or anyother user. :-) The problem now is if you run the command (from win2k) net group it /domain (where 'it' is the group name) or try to open a group in user manager you do not get any listing of uers in that group. The error in windows is "Group name

Suggesting Vorbis Test Suite
Hi, I'm one of these users with a Samsung YEPP MT6, using it with Ogg/Vorbis. After an initial success with the files I ripped myself (using SuSE Linux and my own CDs), I changed my programs to follow the Vorbis comment recommendation (Use multiple identical tags for multiple occurrencies like "ARTIST"). As it turned out, almost n...

Ogg and Android (Vorbis and more exotic)
...r if some have similar experience using mostly Ogg/Vorbis and a large collection of titles. Maybe you can recommend an alternate player that is free (in the sense of "open") and not an ad bot or spy bot. BTW: How many level for volume control does your mobile/player have? My old Samsung YEPP has 30 levels (Good), my Symbios Moto Z8 hat 8 levels (terrible!), and the Galaxy Sii has 12 levels (barely sufficient). I want to enjoy the sound, not ruin my ears.. Thanks Ulrich

Samba And and NetApp Filer
I need some help. I can map the NetApp filer, but when I do a 'ls' in the directory I get errors. Saying that the file or directory does not exist and I know the directories and files do, you can see them when you map the NetApp with NT. If you know the name of the directory you can change into it. I can also map NT with samba just fine with no problems. The NetApp is running a CIFS server

xVM Ready for serious use ?
I currently have 2 x ESXi boxes that have VMs stored on a NFS/iSCSI debian lenny linux box. I had purchased a new whitebox server as an intended replacement for the linux box. I had always planned on installing opensolaris on the new hardware with this config; 2 x 640GB mirrored rpool 6 x 1TB in raidz2 This box was going to be built in parallel with the current server and I would have simply

outbound caller ID
Hi, I would like to know if one can set the outgoing caller ID within Asterisk when calls are going out through: 1) an analog POTS line (I suppose not) 2) a telco BRI line (I don't think so) 3) a telco PRI line (maybe) 4) a voip provider (surely) Thanks, Vieri ____________________________________________________________________________________ Moody friends. Filename character translation
Hi, I came across the problem with rsync-2.5.5 on Cygwin/Win2K while rsyncing with filenames which have 'strange' (non latin-1) characters in filenames. The problem is that filenames on Windows system are coded (in our case) in codepage 852, while server (Linux system) has filename coding according to ISO-8859-2. This two are not fully compatible, causing rsync to simply skip copying some

Looking for player recommendations...
I'm looking for personal recommendations for low cost flash based players which support Vorbis (speex and flac support would be nice, but aren't mandatory). Solid support (no weird limits for low and high bitrates) is required. I'd be buying a fair quantity of them to give away as prizes and gifts. I'd rather purchase players which have native Vorbis support rather than buying

Help again for Samba 3.0
Hello again, althogh some of you already tried to help me, I still have the same problem: I'd like to test the new Samba 3.0 as a PDC for two Windows 2000 clients. My OS is FreeBSD 4.5 Can anyone help me with that ? I always get the errors : 'no user session key' and 'remote procedure call failed'. As I found out the error messages (on the clients) both change regularly.

3.0.6 and pam_winbind problems (sernet)?
Recently I upgraded a server from samba 3.0.2a to 3.0.6, and now apache won't authenticate properly with pam_winbind. Winbind's been restarted, apache has been restarted, for grins I even rebooted the server. >From /var/log/messages: Aug 26 10:24:51 linps2 pam_winbind[654]: user 'jarboed' granted acces >From apache's error log: [Thu Aug 26 10:24:51 2004] [error] (2)No

Linux SSO with samba4?
Hi, I think it is great that samba4 has a single sign on solution for Windows platforms and it seems to work well too, but I am wondering is it possible to do the same for a Linux environment? I have been studying how to implement single sign on using the Ubuntu way through this document: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SingleSignOn and I am wondering if I can do the same with samba4 where the

[RFC] Btrfs "sendshots" and hidden snapshots
Hello all, in IRC we had a discussion on how we could solve sending live subvolumes and how to send subvolumes without the need to administrate/keep old snapshots for incremental sends. One of the ideas was to introduce "sendshots", which are basically snapshots where no refs are counted for file data. This means, that when file data is changed in the sendshot origin, we do not consume

MP3/Vorbis/Opus: What I think I hear
Hi! Sorry, I know the rules for comparing objective subjective listening impressions, but I'd like to know whether from the algorithmic or implementer's point of view the following personal impressions can be confirmed: Comparing MP3 with Vorbis at rather high bitrates, I had the impression the Vorbis sounded more crispy, while MP3 sounded somewhat softened. I preferred Vorbis for that

Samba 4 slow write
Hi Jones, many thanks for your reply. Yepp, I'm using ACL's (Posix ACL's) on filesystem to regulate the access of users for files and directories. Do you mean that this is the "normal" way? These geteuid and getegid system calls are so slow? On the previous system (Debian Wheezy, Samba 3) I've also used ACL's...
