How do you create a tree strucutre with ActiveRecord
I want to build an application that has the concept of administrative domains. What I mean by this is that administrators have access to different data, based on what domains they are a member of. The domain strucutre is hierarchical. Here is an example: - MLB - AL - East - Yankees - Red Sox ... + Central + West - NL + East + Central + West Now image I could put users at any level of the domain, possibly even at multple levels. If the user has administrative privleges, the user would be able to edit the user accounts for other users in the...

Regular Expressions + Matrices
...e ID in the second row, copy both of these rows in full to a new file. Only caveat is that I want a regular expression not to take the full names, but just the first string up to the first whitespace in the inname$name column (ie if row1 has a name of: New York Mets and row2 has a name of New York Yankees, I would want both of these rows to be copied in full since "New" is the same in both...) Here is some example data: ID NAME YEAR SOURCE NOTES 1 New York Mets 1900 ESPN 2 New York Yankees 1920 Cooperstown 3 Boston Redso...

samba3.0.23d group permissions not working
.... If I explicitly add ACL user permissions to the folder then those users can access it. This doesn't work if I can group ACLs. This has screwed up all sorts of stuff as all group based access is broken. I am not seeing any winbind errors; winbind seems to enumerate the groups fine, eg [root@yankee /data]# id cmurdoch uid=15003(cmurdoch) gid=15000(domain users) groups=15000(domain users), 15009(group policy creator owners), 15006(enterprise admins), 15007(domain admins), 15008(schema admins), 15017(emlibrary users), 15030(sophos console administrators), 15033(sophosadministrator), 15035(pcarc...

disconnect after too many errors?
There are a couple of jerks that are tying to dictionary attack my email server, and one of the vectors is pop3/imap logins. Something I would like to do in dovecot, but can't seem to find, is the ability to disconnect after a certain number of errors. The vast majority of my users (i.e. me) don't hand-type POP3 or IMAP transactions, but when we do, we know how to spell things

Using gsub to replace text with link from database
...ture where you can copy and paste your blog text, the feature will scan the text and return the text with the proper html links of my app that point to the player. For example, I''m a blog writer, I create a entry with one sentence "I am a big fan of Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada of the Yankees" and I click submit. I want the output to return the same sentence, but with the link of Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada. This is where I''m at: #This code is taking the sentence and scanning it for two words that are next to each other that have the first letter capitalized @new_link_a...

CT unit to drill on Mars, Revenue Up 200% - Ref. jh010 (PR#8918)
...avenging The Rotating Tool is a device that attaches to the end of a coiled tube to assist with "latching a fish," or removing production kits or undesired obstructions from the well by introducing rotation under mechanical pressure. The design and action of the tool is similar to a "Yankee screwdriver." If, for example, during normal operations, a piece of coiled tube is broken off and remains lodged in the wellbore, it can be difficult to get the new coiled tubing line past the obstruction. By introducing rotation to the "overshot," or latching mechanism at the end of...

"throwing out the old": does Rails really not support...
Frankly I''m losing tolerance for the MS "stack." And I''m intrigued by Rails. But in my outfit I''m not only the web person, but also the application person and the DBA. So when I read that Rails doesn''t want to handle things like "compound keys" I blew right by those claims, thinking, "no way." But before I go deeper, I

Pupppet Ruby DSL
I constantly get told I should just create a DSL in Ruby, instead of having a separate, custom language. This has, unsurprisingly, come up multiple times here at OSCON. So, I decided I''d see if I could hack something up and see how it looked. This is the first thing I could come up with in terms of the basic functionality: #!/usr/bin/ruby class Base file "/etc/passwd",

It's literally the word "macaronic" that I'm going to call into question; it's one that I never knew before I needed to "c" it, and it's almost too perfect that nobody ever noticed that Yankee Doodle's "macaroni" has a very significant connection to the hidden cypher that ties together Stephen King's Language Outliers and the Adam Sandler flick Spanglish and to yet another Shakespeare play, this time the Taming of the Schrew--where the shrewd might see the same "Sp...
