Theora file size
Hi I was surprised with size of Theora files and thought of feedback. Following 1minute duration Theora and Xvid files were made from a y4m file. The resolution is 1280x720: 1. Xvid 17MB 2. Ogg/Theora Q7 31MB 3. Ogg/Theora Q8 38MB 4. Ogg/Theora Q9 49MB 5. Ogg/Theora Q10 61MB The Xvid file was made using mencoder by 2 passes with following options: bitrate=2500:autoaspect:chroma_opt:vhq=4:bvhq=1:quant...

VirtualDub and enconding with DivX, XviD
Hello, I am trying to get the latest wine (Wine 20030219, fake windows) working with the GordianKnot (0.27). Unfortunately, Virtual Dub is not be able to compress a avs-file with the DivX-codec. It crashes if trying to. Also, it would be nice to compress an mpeg-source with Xvid but also it crashes. BTW, VirtualDub does not list it in its codecs window ?f "msvfw32" is set to "native, builtin". Does anyone have experiences getting VDub working (compressing) with the mentioned codecs? Bye, Stephan

Open Source Video Codec and Container (alternative to Xvid)
Hi CentOS users I am running a forum with small video clips (from YouTube and others). I convert those Macromedia Flash videos with: $ mencoder example.flv -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1000:autoaspect -vf pp=lb -oac mp3lame -lameopts fast:preset=standard -o example.avi I use mencoder RPM from Dag Wieers 1) Its very generic command line to convert videos. What would you improve? The size is much bigger than the original FLV :( 2) Is there a real open sour...

Java and ogg/vorbis
...confused to how Ogg/vorbis works. This is my understand. Vorbis is an audio codec that can be used instead of MP3 and it is open source. If this is true, what is Ogg? I think it is some kind of wrapper that allows you to stream Audio and Video. Am I right? Also I want to encode short videos in Xvid and then encode the audio in vorbis. Then I want to stream this over the Internet using a Java applet. I will need to implement the vorbis and Xvid decoders in Java as part of my applet, but where can ogg help me in this little ( or is the word confusing) project? Thanks Charles

mpeg4/xvid/divx vs. theora
Hi there, I have an elementary question. Although theora can be placed in the same class of codecs as MPEG-1, -2, -4 why is there no greater usage of this codec? On the bigger part of web sites trailers or short videos are encoded with some mpeg codec. Why is theora still so rarely used and unfamiliar although it perfomes very well from my point of view? Is it, because - the whole mpeg family is

MemoriesOnWeb and wine
In http://www.edsupport.cc/mguhlin/archives/2007/08/entry_3550.htm, Miguel Guhlin asked how to install MemoriesOnWeb and its recommended codecs under Wine, so here goes. All I did was translate his instructions to wine-ese. 1. Download xvid for windows from http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html, install it the obvious way: $ wine XviD-1.1.3-28062007.exe 2. Download lame from http://www.free-codecs.com/LAME_ACM_Codec_download.htm, install it the completely non-obvious way (this is the commandline equivalent of right clicking on the...

Create CD from avi files
I have avi files in xVid format from my Camera, and I want to create a Video CD that can be viewed on any CD player. I have searched through the various repos (including rpmforage and kbsingh) and did not find anything that would burn. I have a number of programs that have no trouble displaying these files. Including...

Theora encoder performance
I'm evaluating some video codecs for a online conference system. I'm encoding images (640x480) from a webcam. I've been playing around with theora and xvid. First of all, using theora, the decoded image looks strange: http://integrasoft.ro/~mgliga/theora/comparison.png <http://integrasoft.ro/%7Emgliga/theora/comparison.png>. On the left side the image from the webcam, on the right side the image from the webcam encoded, and then decoded u...

Live Streams
Hello, i am member of red5 project. I am studying ways to integrate your codec into red5 and in a near future inside Flash Player. I want to figure some things about Theora codec. -> Is theora proper for live streams (i.e live transcondig webcam)? What is latency for encoding process? -> Is the format tolerant to lost frames? Thanks for the moment.

[OT-ish] WebM/Ogg VP8 streaming
Hi all, Sorry for the VP8 question on the Theora list, but I think all the relevant people are here :) I'm using Icecast to distribute some Ogg Theora streams at the moment with a view to adding VP8 along side these in future. Ideally I'd just use Ogg VP8+Vorbis, I know there is a mapping for this already but how much support from the browsers can I expect for this configuration?

Theora DirectShow filters assembly
Hello everybody, I intend to use Theora as a live video codec in a research project. This project is based on live video broadcast over a poor/slow link, which means lots of frames lost and low bandwith. Until now, it used XViD codec for video compression, which is a working solution but a lot blocky. I made some test with Theora and it looks better in a similar situation. Now, I would like to make a real test using all my home made DirectShow filters (10+) in a GraphEdit pipe. To do that, I need to encode/decode/display...

Bitstream freeze
...." Are those changes supposed to be the last adjustments? Is the mentioned experimental encoder a tool to document the bitstream format and for validation - or is it ment to replace the modified VP3-encoder? By the way: I lately ran some quality comparisons between current Theora CVS and XviD with some VQEQ sequences. (after some exams I will perhaps do a comparison webpage). I think Theora already delivers quality comparable to XviD... so congratulions to the developers! Header structure for &quot;video&quot; stream ?
I am writing a tool that gives information on movie files (http://avicodec.duby.info/) and I want to add ogg support. I have found full of information on ogg file format, vorbis file format, but nothing on the "video" bitstreams that I can found in some ogg files (with XVID movies mixed with vorbis audio for example). I can see that the "video" structe looks like this, but I'm searching information on what I call Dummy fields : struct OGG_Video { WORD wDummy0; DWORD dwFCC; DWORD dwDummy1; DWORD dwFps; DWORD dwDummy3; DWORD...

UCI Project Announcement
Greetings all.. I'm sending this message out here because I suspect that some folks involved in the vorbis codec might be interested in the following (we'd certainly like to make vorbis work well with UCI, and welcome any help in this area). If this is not the case (or this is not an appropriate forum for this sort of thing) I apologize in advance.. <p> Project

Performance issues
...share. Seemingly at random, my video stream will halt due to an inability to receive data from the server. If I pause for a few seconds and resume, everything is usually fine. This generally happens only once or twice per hour, but it's annoying. The video is not huge. We're talking ~350MB xvid files, 45 minutes each (compressed network TV shows). The Samba server used to be a Windows 2000 Server and the same video files worked perfectly from there. Network is gigabit on the server side, 100mbit on the client side - though even wireless should be able to stream these files. Virtually no t...
