Swat Setup Information
I am inquiring about setup of the SWAT utility I have installed Red
Hat 7.0 with samba installed during the initial setup of Redhat. I have
two network cards installed in my Server and I am connected to the
internet via a Cable Modem. When I try to start SWAT netscape displays
the message that it cannot find the local host on port 90. I have
downloaded the book over samba and I have also tried to

Setting up PXE server
...er so I can use network
boots to load new computers {some of which are virtual) at
home. It's more of an intellectual exercise than a work
necessity. I've read several "how to" documents, and even the one on
the RedHat site doesn't help. (For example, it refers to
/etc/xinet.d instead of /etc/xinetd.d, and the careless references
continue elsewhere.)
My goal is to make it possible to load a computer using network boot
with the equivalent of the "net-install" of Centos 7. My gateway
computer serves as a DHCP and (internal) DNS server for my in-house

setting up swat
I've looked in /usr/local/samba/swat for help
and even the samba source docs and can't
find anything on setting up swat.
I've also looked at samba.org/samba/docs,
but can find a swat setup doc.
Can some please point me in the right direction?
thanks,

Hi MJ and Rowland,
I did abit of testing last week (two debian jesie servers with sernet
4.2 samba packages). Seems when rsync is run against rsyncd or involved
via xinet as it is described in the wiki the user and group mapping does
not work and uid and gid numbers are used. If I used rsync via ssh the
mapping works and there is no need for idmap.ldb to be in sync.

Fatal: EOF while reading environment from master Error
Hello all!
I guess it's a standard reason for joining a mailing list, but I have a
problem. For some reason, whenever I try to start dovecot, be it from
the xinet.d or from the commandline, I get this rather bizzare error. I
can't even work out what it means, so I can't even begin to debug it.
There is nothing extra in /var/log/messages, so I'm out of ideas. I've
tried it with the default config, as well as with a config that I
adjusted t...

Problem with SWAT on MacOS X 10.3.3 server
Hi everybody
I have installed SWAT services under MacOS X Server 10.3.3 by adding
the service to Netinfo manager and set enabled = yes in
/etc/xinet.d/swat file.
I try to login as root in Safari (I have enabled the root account),
but keep getting the messages that the name and the password is
incorrect.
Any ideas anyone ?
Best regards

Error running SWAT
Running SuSE v9.0 and Samba v3.0.7. I have samba up and running ok with
printer and file shares working peer to peer with Win2000 box. However,
I would like to use SWAT for config purposes, rather than manual edit.
If I run http://localhost:901 I receive a 'connection refused' error
message. I had a look in /etc/services and see these two lines as the
only ones referring to port 901:

Can SAMBA make a kerberos keytab on Solaris 10?
...ng to use SAMBA (the version included with Solaris 10) with
an AD.
NET ADS JOIN works like a charm to create a computer object in the AD
for the solaris machine, and SAMBA users are authenticating without a
problem. This is good. HOWEVER -- I also need other protocols
(including ssh and Xinet KA-Share) to authenticate users.
As I understand it, SAMBA uses kerberos to authenticate against AD,
so as long as everyone is using the same keytab file, I'd expect all
to be well. However, I find that when I do net ads join it doesn't
create or modify a keytab file that I can fin...

changing macintosh type and creator codes
Anytime a PC on our network copies a file to our server and a macintosh
client
goes to view that file, the type and creator codes are incorrect. We are
running
Samba for Windows clients and Xinet KA-Share for Mac clients. I think it
has
something to do with the resource forks. I can copy a file to the server
from a
Mac then copy the file from the server to a windows machine and back again
and the type and creator codes will be changed. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks, Chris

WAS: Newbie: can't connect localhost:901 - help
Don't feel stupid. I'd guess you're using 2.4 kernel and not the 2.2 kernel?
In 2.2 services default to using inet.d
In 2.4 services default to using xinetd to start stuff.
You need to go to /etc/xinet.d and make sure the file swat
has a "disable=no" in it.
As a matter of fact, for security purposes, I'd do a vi * in that directory (/etc/xinet.d ) and make sure everything is disabled except stuff that YOU want started!

EL6, xinetd, and permissions. What am I missing?
Staging for a rollout of EL 6, and ran into a very strange permissions issue
with xinetd that defies all (my) logic.
It's a script called "spfiled" that we use for messaging between our server
cluster servers. I'm trying to get it to run with "least permissions
necessary". Because it reads/writes files in conjunction with a web-based
service, it runs a...

Latency and Rsync Transfers
Hello,
Working a few servers that are transferring data across country with a 75ms
delay on a GIGE connection. We can tune the tcp buffers on linux to improve
the connections using iperf. Does rsync use the tcp buffers of the OS or
does it override these settings?
Thanks,
Neal

TFTP Server
G'Day All,
Can anyone give me some direction in setting up the TFTP server on my
RadHat ES3 box?
I did quite a bit of reading, but I think I am more unsure now than
before. I found the information nebulous. TFTP is already installed. I
am trying to determine where the root directory for the tftp services is
located so I can copy the CISCO 7960 firmware files onto it.
Thanks.... Ferg
