xfontsel
I was reading where xfontsel is the OLD method of selecting fonts before
antialiasing.
What is the new method to show available fonts on the system and select
them?
How do I list or show the available anti-aliases fonts?

A long time ago there was a utility called something like xfontsel with
which you could toggle any of the some-two dozen properties of fonts,
e.g., you could filter out all italic fonts or show just the 12-pt
fonts. Yeah, it took ten minutes the first time to figure out how the
utility worked, but then you had a tool that worked, was effective and

Error: Widget field13 has zero width and/or height
...e -a took 2 full days on a base of 246 installed ports.
And resulted in a *465 installed ports base*. Ouch! It's only been
about 5mos. since my last upgrade. While that may seem to some a
fair amount of time. Does it *really* require *doubling* my port
install base?
Anyway, more to my point;
2) xfontsel and any derivitive since this upgrade now always fails.
Examples:
An attempt to use xfontsel always fails with the same results.

Just need to vent
Sometimes the direction of UI development in gnome really angers me.
For example, when selecting a font for the gedit text editor - there is
no way to ask it to only show monospace fonts.
It's a fricken text editor, that should be the default - meaning you
have to do something special to get fonts shown that aren't monospace.
Seriously, who is in charge with the UI design in gnome?

Help with fonts
...to me, is not what I would expect when there are 252
Helvetica fonts on the computer.
A. Can anyone tell me how I can look at a particular ttf file and
see what characters are in it (so that I can see if it has a \
that looks like a W)
B. Can anyone tell me how, given a font (selected through
xfontsel), I can find out what is implementing it (e.g. which
ttf file it is in).

possible bug: dev.copy / could not find any X11 fonts
Hi,
I am experiencing something strange, and thought I would ask before
reporting a bug. I trimmed it down to a self-contained example,
attached as an R file. The purpose of the functions is to save the
plots into a ps file and simultaneously plot them on an x11 device,
but don't open a new one if there is already one opened (I don't want
the repositioning / flicker).

size of text and numbers in graphs (PR#349)
Hi!
Since installation of R 0.90 there are problems with the size
of text and numbers also in the x11-device (I reported about similar
problems with the postscript device recently). For numbers and
letters a different size is used:
plot(1:10,1:10,type="n")
text(2,8,"F5F5F5F5F5")
text(2,7,"F5F5F5F5F5",cex=2)

missing fonts for centos 4?
there seem to be very few iso8859-1 (latin-1) fonts. in particular the
lucidatypewriter fonts aren't there for 8859-1. but it does have 8859-2.
just playing with xfontsel i see about 800 8859-1 fonts and 2000 8859-2.
did something get left out? i did an everything install. and further
poking with yum doesn't show any other font packages that could be
installed.

MiscFixed fonts in CentOS 5.5
Hi,
I just did a fresh install of CentOS 5.5, as usual : base system, X
Window system, GNOME, and then the apps I need.
The MiscFixed fonts don't seem to be available in GNOME Terminal
anymore. Has the package been renamed? Any idea where they went? It's my
favourite font for the terminal.
Cheers,
Niki

Symbol Fonts under Wine

special symbol fonts. The fonts are TrueType. I am using XFree86
version 4.0.1 running on FreeBSD 4.2, with the FreeType module loaded.
All of my regular TrueType fonts work fine with X programs and under
Wine. The symbol TrueType fonts work fine with X programs (such as
xfontsel or xfd), but under Wine, many of the characters do not appear,
or the wrong character from the same font file will appear instead. The
condition occurs in all of the Windows programs I have tested, most
noticeably in the Windows Character Map. The Wine install I have is

Font alias trouble?
Sorry - I'm a newbie, so please be patient.
I'm trying to use wine to run an application, and it seems to be working OK,
except......there seems to be a problem with the Courier New font.
When I look at xfontsel, it shows both courier new and courier. But when I
try to look at something as Courier New in wine, it only shows numbers and a
few punctuation bits.
When I change the font to Courier in the Wine'd app, I can see things
properly. So, I'm thinking that I should try to substitute this wit...

R | vnc | X11 fonts
Greetings -
Users of the box I'm putting together will need to be able to run R
remotely, using a virtual desktop. One approach (that I'm trying) is to
use VNC. So far, I can get the remote gnome desktop up on the server
(running Fedora Core 5), and can start R from a terminal. However, for a
lot of the R scripts I've tried, I get 'font errors' - the general error

Some problems with X11
Hi,
I am really new with R, so I don't know anything about it. I have
written a script (attached) which tries to do really basic stuff (such
as computing basic statistics and basic plots). When I try to plot a
histogram and pairs, for example, I get the following message:
