To address this problem I have installed all fonts that seem to be necessary, including freefont, gsfonts-X11, sharefont, xfonts-100dpi, xfonts-75dpi, xfonts-base, xfonts-scalable, xfs, xfstt, and others that looked pertinent, yet this still has not solved the problem. Everytime I start a program with wine-20010629 on Red Hat Linux, font metrics get updated.
