[Way OT] New hardware
Can anyone share experience with opteron versus the xeon (woodcrest) for R
under linux? I am looking at using 16-32Gb of ram in a workstation (as
opposed to a server).
Thanks in advance....

Dual Opteron or Dual Xeon?
I am about to lease another server to be a backup web/mail server with a
replicated mysql database. The current live server is a dual Xeon
2.8Ghz. Would I do better to get another Xeon server or an Opteron
based server? My concerns are compatibility of the database and the SSL
certificate currently running on the Xeon machine. Are these concerns
unfounded?
TIA

Chip Clock HT Cache Bus Speed
---------------------------------------------------------
5080 3.7 GHz YES 2MB 1066 MHz
5160 3.0 GHz NO 4MB 1333 MHz
Does the .7 GHz and HT worth more then 4MB cache and higher bus speed? The
application is VoIP so there is not a lot of IO so I would not think Bus
Speed would matter. I am finding mixed information on HT, some say it is
great, others say it

RAID benchmarks
...t seen very many
good benchmarks running on recent hardware for things like this. Even
simple things like how different raid levels perform with fast CPUs and
really fast disks.
We recently got the first of the cluster machines (which has the
following specs: (from penguin computing)
2x 1.6ghz woodcrest (so 4 cores total)
2g ram (we may upgrade to more, depending on what we seem to need)
6x 15k SAS 73G hard drives.
I've always read that RAID 10 is the RAID of choice for mail, because
the checksums take time and whatnot, but on a system that fast I'm sure
that's not an issue (which I...

Unexpected results using HTB qdisc
Hi All,
I am using the script below to limit download rates and manage traffic for a certain IP address and testing the results using iperf. The rate that iperf reports is much higher than the rate I have configured for the HTB qdisc. It''s probably just some newbie trap that''s messing things up but I''m buggered if I can see it.
The following script is run on the

Network performance problem with Xen 3.0.3 HVM/VT
...oes anybody know of this problem ? (a solution, workaroud, patch, would be
even better of course :) ).
This is a very big performance issue (for us), and we are reluctantly thinking
about going back to vmware.
Any help would be welcome
Details about our setup :
- This is using DELL PE2950 with woodcrest CPUs.
- We use PAE build from Xen 3.0.3 sources
- Configuration file :
kernel = ''/usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader''
builder=''hvm''
memory = 512
name = "xxxxx"
vcpus=1
acpi=0
apic=0
pae=0
vif = [ ''type=ioemu, mac=aa:00:00:e7:00:02, bridge=x-brxxxx'...

CentOS 4.3 on Intel Xeon Core 2 Duo
Dear list,
I am planning to buy a new server -because the new Core2 Duo based Xeons
(5100 series) are considerably faster in some scenarios than Opteron
machines while not beeing more expensive, I would like to hear some
real-world experiences from people who have installed CentOS 4.3 or 4.4
on such a setup.
Specifically:
CPU: 2x Intel Xeon 5100 2GHz
Board: Intel S5000 chipset

ipmi regression in 4.5?
I've been monitoring CPU temperature on a few Dell SC1435s running CentOS4
via OpenIPMI and 'ipmitool sdr'. It's been working very nicely, but the
upgrade to 4.5 not so long ago seems to have broken something:
# ipmitool sdr type Temperature
Temp | 01h | ns | 3.1 | Disabled
Planar Temp | 04h | ok | 7.1 | 30 degrees C
Temp Interface | 53h | ns | 7.1

Etch: Xen does not want guests: Error: (22, 'Invalid argument')
Hi,
I want to use Xen on a current Testing using the amd64 architecture. I
want to use the i386 architecture for the laster Xen guests.
The hardware is a Intel Xeon 5130 (Woodcrest) with the Vanderpool
support. Two harddisk are used as a Linux software raid 1.
Installing the hypervisor and rebooting worked like a charm since the
bootmenu of grub has also been updates:)
The hypervisor is running:

CentOS 5 Issues Booting Under VMWare
Hi,
VMWare has been a great tool for me to experiment with CentOS 3 and
CentOS 4. However, I'm running into issues with CentOS 5. First, it
is *extremely* slow to boot (as in it takes over an hour to boot
CentOS 5 on a machine that boots CentOS 3 & 4 in less than one
minute). Then, after an hour of slowly watching the messages go by on
the console and the CPU of the host machine pegged
