smbclient can back up WNT system disks?
Can the "tar" function in SMBCLIENT be used to successfully backup and
restore a remote WNT 4 sp3 system disk? I'm guessing no, because:
1. active registry files, so restored disk may not be bootable
2. loss of ACLs and other "extra" file properties in tar format
Anybody tried it?
This is for machines with SCSI adapters, so even if we have to replace the

1 out of 5 wnt 4sp3 machines acts up
Ok, I'm stumped. I've got what appear to be 5 identical WNT workstation 4
sp3 machines. All have been configured to run off the primary domain
controller (Samba 1.9.19). On one of these ONLY the domain logins
generates a single popup window which says:

W2K - WNT Profiles
Arne,
With regard to your log on script not working, that ususally means
permissions issues. Does everybody have permissions for the full path for the
log on script? Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Tony

Full wNT/w2K ACL conformance
We are planning to replace a quite big domain running W2K with Samba ( at
the very least, the DC ).
Though i'd love to have the extra security capabilities of W2K ( Kerberos )
as a DC, Samba/NT4 as PDC/BDC with ldapsam will more than suffice for now.
The show-stopper right now is this: we need to be able to assign "real"
Full Control permissions: a user who has "Full

Port 139 versus Port 445
I've noticed that my W2K clients connect to Samba much more quickly
if I run it on port 445 instead of 139. However, my WNT clients then
won't connect at all. I read somewhere that it was possible to forward
the requests on port 139 to port 445. Anyone know how to do this or how
to listen to both ports simultaneously?
Thanks,
Jason Joines

Where could I get information about wine libraries content ?
For instance, if I'm migrating a WNT console based application using
winelib, which is the library I must link with object files ?
I don't have this information.
Thanks in advance. Ignasi Villagrasa.

file names in Win Explorer
I'm having a problem getting W95 and WNT to correctly read file names on
a samba server I set up. The server passed all of the diagnostics, and
file names show up correctly in a dos window. However, under windows
explorer, anything after a . doesn't show up in the name. This is only
true for a . in the middle of the name, "hid...

autoconfigure new NT4 sp3 clients, samba 1.9.19 server
Hi,
I'm running the Alpha of 1.9.19 (we needed Samba as a domain controller)
and want to know the best way to set it up so that the first login for a
new user on an WNT workstation in that domain creates the profile we want
for the user, rather than the one NT seems to want.
1. The profile created is about .5 Mb in size. The parts that we want
in there are maybe 20% of that. How does NT decide which of this stuff
gets copied into each user's profil...

Mount Openfiler created XFS volumes
Greetings,
I have a 500Gig hdd with and XFS filesystem created by openfiler (which
strangely switched from lovely CentOS for reasons best known to them). I fired
up a Centos box with this hdd. I then did
yum install kmod-xfs.i686 xfsdump.i386 dmapi xfsprogs
and it wnt through.
But when I try to mount this volume
mount -t xfs /dev/hdd1 /mnt/test
I get the error:
mount: /dev/hdd1 already mounted or /mnt/test busy
I then try
xfs_admin -l /dev/hdd1
The results being:
xfs_admin: unexpected XFS SB magic number 0x00000000

Suggested 2.0.x version for PDC?
I tried building the 2.0.x alpha from the CVS site on our new Linux box -
but no joy. It allowed WNT 4sp3 boxes to mount a share using the domain
username/password, but it wouldn't let users log onto the consoles of the
WNT boxes using the same domain username/password combinations. (The log
file from the interaction was not very useful - it was created for each
machine which tried, but had z...

NT 4 sp3 audit + samba = total mess
...logs will refuse to open, with an "enumeration out of range"
error.
For those of you unfortunate to also trip over this glitch, here is how to
get out of this state:
As administrator
1. control panels -> services
2. select event log
3. change startup to manual
4. reboot (it's WNT, all fixes require reboots!)
5. when it comes up, delete the .evt files from C:\winnt\system32\config
6. control panels -> services
7. select event log
8. start it. This creates new event logs.
9. change startup to automatic
10. reboot
So, my question are:
A. Is there a patch/fix so that samb...

I find it slightly surprising, that

Winelib problems
I'd like to know how to link console functions such as
WriteConsoleOutputA.
They are documented as implemented, and I can compile source code
including these function predefinitions, but I get undefined errors when
linking. I don't know which library to add to get objects linked.
Thanks in advance. Ignasi Villagrasa.

slow backup using W98
I have been using Samba as a Windows server replacement for years, both
in my shop and most of my clients. Recently I replaced a WNT 4 server at
a customer location with a Linux box - Mandrake 10.0 - which is strictly
a file server.
The machine my client is using to backup his server is a W98 box w/
350MHz/256MB, an HP Travan tape drive and Stomp Backup My PC V5.0. This
backup was taking about 4 hours when the W98 box was backi...

Calculating file size.
hi,
Here's an interesting one...
If I view the files on my Samba server, the file size is reported
differently depending on if I'm looking from WinXX or Win2k.
That is, if I do a 'properties' on a file with Windows ME for instance, I
see 'Size' and 'Size on Disk' numbers that seem reasonable. Size on Disk is
slightly larger which seems reasonable. But if I look
