Access to Files on Unix host from Windows2K Host
I needed to find a way for a user, on a Windows 2000 host, to be able to access files in a filesystem on a unix host running HP-UX 11 (and Apache webserver) both of which are on the same network.
The files in the directory on the unix host are open for all to read.
An application on the Windows host expects to have the path for the file system (on the unix host) defined in an .ini file as

SAMBA3 and WINS problem
I install samba3 on solaris8 and I configure the PDC support and WINS

I want Samba to be the domain controller, I don't want to have samba rely on Windows2k as the domain controller, so this is why I don't have it set Security = Domain. If anyone can please provide me with some very helpful information or a small working config file, please do.

problems with samba 3 and termnal server
...rrently uses a Suse 9.2 pro with the last version of Samba to
share a folder containing data for an Enterprise Management program (Windows
based).
everything works fine with local clients (many 98s and 1 XP machine).
we have some (15) clients connecting to the ERP program via a Terminal Server
(Windows2K server). these clients often stuck in some requests for 5 to 15
minutes (randomly) and then unlock and continue working.
note that:
- the same folder on a Win2000 machine works fine (ie. no stucks)
-> this means it is a samba problem
- local clients work find

However, I can't seem to get the windows application to run. It
launches a Dr. Watson error.
I am using SuSE7.2 pro, Windows2K, and the particular windows app is
Juno, a free e-mail client.
I am a newbie that just installed linux (for the 900th time) last week.
My question is, is there a means of requesting help with this app, or
should I redo the windows 2K in 98?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Migration issue
...ime has come to move our windows domain from NT 4 to windows 2000.
Currently, we run samba 2.0.7 on an old RH 6.2 box which hands off all
authentication to the NT4 pdc (we have no bdc currently). I would like to
keep this same style of authentication -- where the samba box passes it off
to a windows2k server. We will be buying a new box to run our new samba file
server on. I plan to run the most current version of samba there.
I want to minimize downtime during this migration, so I am looking for the
best strategy to do this.
Can samba 2.0.7 authenticate against a windows 2000 active direc...

R: Windows 2K roaming profiles
...the user logs on to the server, since he doent have a profile yet on the server, a temporary profile is copied in the local machine when he logs on and sent to the server. I dont want this behaviour as he already have lots of settings on his machine.
Is there anyway to disable roaming profiles on windows2k so that it will logon to the server but will get local profiles instead..or a way to copy already existing profiles to the server...
Thanks

User can delete file when they have no read/write access
...g a problem with my profiles share on my Samba 2.2.3 PDC server.
I have a share like this:
[profiles]
path = /home/samba/profiles
writeable = yes
create mask = 0700
directory mask = 0700
browsable = no
valid users = root,@smbusers
The roaming profile works just fine with windows2k, and the users can't read the other profiles (they get a "access denied" if they try to access another profile then their own) thats great, BUT they can delete the other profiles.
It aint only the profiles share but all files, and thats pretty much a problem here =)

FW: Samba 3.0.11 on AIX 4.3
...3.0.4 from
bullfreeware.com
did not work after installation. I haven't been successful trying to
install
it from source. I have downloaded various requisite programs such as
kerberos
(which won't compile either) and openldap.
I am particularly interested in Samba's ability to join a Windows2K
domain
and its ACLs capabilities. Pls any help would be appreciated.
First, it (kerberos) kept complaining about not being able to determine
some thread stuff, I got past that by using the --disable-thread option.
Then configure goes through, but "make" crashes out.

Best Distro for my dream Xen setup
My requirements:
A distro that''s relatively modern (e.g. supports kvm and xen, but I
guess as long as kvm runs on any of the guests I should be OK too). I
plan to run Linux, Windows2k (xfer my old desktop), WindowsXP, and
probably Solaris 10. I also need to xfer my other old Linux system
Redhat 7.0 (2.2.16-22), so that I could eventually migrate all data and
services off it.
I was hoping for a dual monitor setup so that I could run Windows on
one, Linux on another (or any o...

Using Samba for DOS type file sharing
Dear List,
(History)
My company has an old DOS based application that we run from our
Windows NT4/Windows2K workstatsions. This DOS app is based on DB3/DB4 (yea
the old (1987?) one with one file per table and separate files for FKs and
the like ) Anyhow...we had it on an NT server that we would map a drive to
and then launch...peachy. No we have more users of that application < 15

Incorrect User/Password
...lick on the folder I get a logon window. When I
enter the username and password, it says it's invalid.
The smb.conf file was taken from a simular working
box.
I'm using Ver 3.0-alpha17 on FreeBSD 4.6. I'm logging
into the window2k box with the same username/password
as on Samba. The windows2k user/pass combination is
authenticated thru a domain, if that matters.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jim

missing dlls, exes?
...s2.c(1723) cmd=50 (SMBtrans2)

OT_FOUND
Also, I get similar messages with other dlls like digest.dll, msnsspc.dll,
wininet.dll, etc. and executables like cmd.exe sndvol32.exe.
Samba cannot find them, but they are in windows\system32. I'm getting these
messages from both windows2k and xp. as well.
Any idea?
Thanks
