Some questions regarding CEntos
Hello list. I am assigned the task to select a RHEL3 clone operating system for a couple of servers. So far I have found Whitehat Linux, Tao, Scientific Linux and Centos. I like the community developed aspect advantage of Centos compared to the other distros where one or couple people maintain the operating system. - Is this a long term goal project? How does it sustain itself? How much extra money is usually required on...

Thank You
Just reaching out to say thanks to all the folks that keep CentOS, EPEL, this mailing list, etc running. It is probably partly due to having used Red Hat for over two decades, but I always have a good experience with CentOS. The recent servers that I have setup with CentOS 8 are purring along. Thanks for the work and support. Cheers, Ian

YUM update from RHEL3 to CentOS3 stalls
Hi all, I just ran into a problem. I was following the nifty procedure to upgrade a WhiteHat/RHEL3.x box to CentOS 3.6 and the update hung. It was in the process of updating MySQL server, and a post install scriptlet apparently failed. So I killed the process with a CTRL-C. However, upon trying to restart YUM, it says there is nothing left to, saying: Gathering header information file(...

Thank You
...olute delight to see a posting like yours. No questions, no complaints, no "you shouldn't be doing that, and no non-answers. Thank you for confirming my belief that the open-source community is there to help. I, too, started with RedHat Linux when it was 'free', converted to WhiteHat, then Centos. I control servers of x86_64, Raspberry Pi, mostly on Centos 7, all for fun, not as a job. I'm working on the C8.... Now, ... I haven't had as good luck with C8 s you allege. There were several things I had to deal with: - new firewall - new mailer (sendmail -> postfi...

8.2.2004 Latest yum update renders machine unbootable
...an yum update. So, I'm installing 7.8.2003 with no updates until I see the "all clear -- updates will no longer make your system unbootable" message from the Centos team. In my many years of blindly updating my installations, starting from the free Redhat distributions, through Whitehat and onto Centos, this is the first disaster, and luckily, it didn't hit all my systems. Let's hope there aren't many more. David

Do I have an infected init file?
Hello; I'm running a FreeBSD 4.10-release-p2 box and both chkrootkit 0.44 & 0.45 report that my /sbin/init file is infected. It appears as though the egrep for "UPX" in the output of "strings" triggers the infected notice. When I copy the init file from an uninfected box to this one chkrootkit continues to report it as infected. Is chkrootkit reading a copy of the

sshd exponential backoff patch
hi, I wrote a patch to openssh sshd.c which enables "exponential backoff", so that an attacker cannot brute force your password by making hundreds of login attempts. here is the code: http://sam.nipl.net/sshd-backoff/ An attacker who fails to login is locked out (by IP address) for 1 minute, and the lockout period doubles for each failed login after that. Normally three logins are

T100P lost D channel
Hi all, I have a Wildcard that is flip floping between internally clocked and the PRI. It is showing Red Alarm/Recovering. After a long run around with the telco, they said I have lost the D channel on my side. I am seeing this message: == Restart on requested on entire span 1 Sep 21 08:29:48 WARNING[1192491824]: chan_zap.c:5942 zt_pri_error: PRI: !! Got reject for frame 1, but we only
