NHW Project - high compression & community
...very good in fact at
very high compression, it really preserves the contours, edges, and applies
a rather strong denoising, details washing-out inside the contours. The
resulting image can appear then a little "cartoonish" but visually it's the
result I neatly prefer compared to x264, WebP, Rududu results and artifacts
at these same very high compression ratios.(This is also confirmed by PSNR
and SSIM...)
So for -l8 very high compression setting and above, I will need to find a
new approach of compression and perceptual quality, and new
processings.Again if you have skills in image...

[RFC] Moving tools/llvm-mca/lib into lib/MCA

time for performance.
As an example of how MCA can be used to improve scheduling, we have built a
prototype machine scheduler that optimizes the simulated latency of a block
of code under the constraints of the scheduling DAG. We've had interesting
wins of 2-3% on assembly kernels for webp

The patch is completely mechanical and can be seen here

NHW Project - neatness metrics
...time to get back to the NHW Project.I was thinking about
making a technology demo, and I wanted to highlight the uniqueness of the
NHW codec that is neatness/sharpness preserving or enhancement. With my
eyes, I can see that the NHW codec has more neatness/sharpness than the
other codecs (x265, x264, WebP, Rududu, JPEG,...), but for a demo there
must be objective metrics, and this is where things complicates....
I have tried to make quickly a neatness/sharpness metrics but without luck,
and it doesn't seem that easy... Would someone of you have a neatness
metrics? Would help me a lot for my tec...

...ebsite for the NHW Project, make demo pages of the technology, and all
that with good visual design. It won't be such easy for me... For example, I
can easily supply a description, explanation of the different steps of the
algorithm, I can supply images encoded at mid-compression with NHW, x265,
WebP, JPEG,... that (visually) show that the NHW codec has more
neatness/sharpness than the others, I can supply encode/decode timings that
show that unoptimized NHW codec is faster than the other codecs.
Unfortunately, I don't have a neatness metrics, I won't be able to create

Wavelet Image Codec - advice
...C Channel.I contacted you to
have your advice and comment about wavelets for image/video compression, as
I have made a wavelet-based image compression codec.
I know that currently the best image/video compression codecs use the DCT
block-based transform, like JPEG, Ogg Theora and the recent Google WebP,
for example, but what would you think of wavelet transform?
Here is the link for my wavelet-based image compression codec:
http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/
I am still trying to improve my codec, and so any comments and advice are
very welcome.I had few, but great discussions with Monty Montgomery a...

NHW Image codec - improvement of precision
Hi again,
I have improved precision of my codec (on the encoder and decoder).I have
also improved the -h1 quality setting.-Source code and binaries at
http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/-.
I am still trying to improve precision of my codec, with keeping my
low-complexity (fast) approach.
I do not totally use the reference (and impressive) block prediction with
different modes + residual coding scheme,

NHW Project - news with Xiph.org
...the NHW codec
performs bad on all metrics because it modifies image to give it more
neatness (this also includes a slight denoising)... For speed, the NHW
codec is written in plain C code, there are no C optimization, no SIMD
optimization, no multithreading, whereas the other codecs
(x265,VP9,x264,WebP,...) have them and are highly optimized, so time/speed
comparison will not be fair...
Then there are innovations in the NHW codec: like a new fast wavelet
transform, a multistage residual coding, 3 new entropy coding schemes and
other things like for example interesting pre- and post- processing b...

NHW Project - some update
Hello,
I don't have advanced on the NHW Project this past month, but I have
definitely validated its characteristics and this new version.
The NHW Codec preserves or enhances image neatness and sharpness, which
translates that on good quality images the NHW Codec is globally better
than HEVC, and on degraded (with blur, artifacts) images it is worse than
HEVC because it lacks of precision. I

[Bug 13749] New: Add more extensions to DEFAULT_DONT_COMPRESS
...t
Reporter: paul at debian.org
QA Contact: rsync-qa at samba.org
There are a number of file extensions that are already mostly compressed that
are not yet listed in DEFAULT_DONT_COMPRESS in loadparm.c. These are probable
candidates to add:
- webm (audiovisual media file formt)
- webp (image format)
- ogv (Ogg container format)
- squashfs (used for e.g. Debian live images)
I'm sure there are more, hopefully people can add those to this bug report?

NHW codec
...ur codec to not catch attention and
don't have answers, but what is even harder is that I find the NHW codec
still competitive (even in its current state).
For example, I have made a visual comparison for mid compression (-l2 to
-h2 setting) on 50 images of the NHW codec with BPG (HEVC intra), WebP, and
Rududu Image Compression (Rududu is a powerful wavelet image codec,
released in April 2008, that is based on SPIHT-like, zerotree coding, -it
totally went under-the-radar...-).
Results: The codec that has the more precision is BPG, the codec that has
the more neatness is NHW.Don't know wh...

subbands, I have then saved another 1Ko per .nhw files without noticeable
difference and so I have raised again the quantization. The reconstructed
images have now a better precision and still a good neatness.
Update at: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/
Else I realize that JPEG XR (2009) and WebP (2011) are quite good codecs,
they are backed furthermore by big companies Microsoft and Google, they
claim and guarantee that their codecs are royalty-free, and so if at the
moment of their release in 2009 and 2011, they didn't succeed in replacing
JPEG, I can not see why today the NHW codec t...

I think Apple is somehow "attached" to the MPEG group. They control the
"pools" too. Your codec sounds great. Google could -- if they wanted to --
use it but they have Web^M and webP. Look to Asia. Asus has just launched a
new phone. ??
