Possible new CentOS user (currently WBEL)
Hi, For a few months i've been using WhiteBox Enterprise Linux. In fact, i've migrated all my companie's servers (about 20) to this RHEL distro like. Well, it's not that i'm not satisfied, but WBEL is a one man show and that causes me some preocupation. And besides, it seems to me that it can't stand up to the rythm RHEL evolves. That's why i'm writing to you, posing a few questions, if you don't mind to answer: 1 - Why did you choose CentOS ? 2 - If you have/had experi...

Problems migrating from WBEL
Hi folks: I've recently migrated one of my production servers (bad Jason!) from WBEL to CentOS 3.3 using Donavan's instructions in the FAQ (http://www.centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=19). While it was as painless as the document suggests, I've run into problems with postgrey (a postfix greylisting daemon) on my server. Whenever I try to start postgrey, I get...

nmbd won't ignore an interface
This is a config issue, at least I hope so. I have a wbel v3 box (same as rhel v3 box) with 2 nics and it acts as both my firewall and my samba server. eth0: WAN (dhclient to my cable modem provider) eth1: LAN (dhcpd for my private network) The relevant part of my /etc/samba/smb.conf looks like this... [global] interfaces = eth1 lo bind inte...

Wherefore whitebox?
Well, I'm a recent convert from WBEL. My biggest concern with CentOS is that the community here seems to want to be more than a recompile of RHEL. But WBEL is floundering, what with Katrina and Rita, and there really being only 1 developer behind it, etc. I offer an automated shell script to switch from WBEL4 to CentOS4 (easy, i...

Upgrading from WBEL and 4.2?
A while ago, I wrote a script to switch a server from WBEL 4.x to CentOS 4.x. The recent switch to 4.2 broke this script. Now there are all kinds of dependencies like python-urlgrabber, and tshe task of getting these sorted out just drop me into dependency hell. (and this is just trying to get yum installed!) Suggestions? -Ben -- "The best...

Mod_auth_mysql
Hello, I just upgraded from WBEL 4 to Centos 4.1 per the FAQ. I'm pretty sure after running 'yum update', mysql and apache were updated. I was previously using mod_auth_mysql under WBEL 4 to password protect several directories but now things seem to be broken. When I go to a password protected directory I get an In...

Converting from WBEL 4 to CentOS 4.
Hi all I want to migrate a server from Whitebox Linux 4 to CentOS 4. I think I should be able to do it without reinstallation, as both are RHEL clones...Can someone please tell me how? and if there are any pitfalls doing it on a production server and doing further updates from CentOS updates? With best regards. Sanjay. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...

Comming from WhiteBox Linux ...
Hello several months ago I install WhiteBox Linux on several severs, I was happy, not woriing about upgrading every 1,5 year as when I use RH 4.0, 6.0, 7.3, 9.0 .... And then WhiteBox went black, WBEL updates release slowed down and maintainer wont help form anybody. Just telling "If you want quick updates, build it yourself.". I prefer wasting time for customizations and/or improvements instead of things which can be done once and then shared in comunity. So, I try to change may...

Blog article about the state of CentOS
...et cooked again :-) Indeed.? The author's conclusion has been the case since White Box Enterprise Linux was a thing.? Anyone and everyone can get the sources from git.centos.org as soon as they are released and build the stuff themselves if they think it can be done faster; that's how WBEL got started, as a one-user project that just happened to be publicly released.? Building from source has never really been any easier; the lack of .src.rpms is not an impediment to just getting something built.? But the CentOS value-add is that those rebuilt sources have been tested for binary...

HowTos/MigrationGuide
...ontent at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/MigrationGuide Based heavily on the pieces I added earlier to http://wiki.centos.org/Migration/5 Tried to keep it general. Would assume that we want only one page on Migration with sub-pages for specific versions. I referred to the CentOS 3 FAQ entry on WBEL migration but it would seem to be cleaner to change the structure to something like http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/MigrationGuide/CentOS2 ... http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/MigrationGuide/CentOS5 FAQ entries could point to the corresponding sub-pages. Opinions? Phil

Migrate from RHAS 4 to CentOS 4.2
...came with RHAS 4, but without any paid support. I would like to migrate the server over to CentOS. Here is what I've pieced together from some older posts by Johnny, can someone confirm this should work? I know this is somewhat covered in the FAQ, although both entries refer to FC or WBEL, which already have built-in yum support. Install the following files: http://vault.centos.org/4.2/os/ia64/CentOS/RPMS/ yum-2.4.0-1.centos4.noarch.rpm http://vault.centos.org/4.2/os/ia64/CentOS/RPMS/centos- release-4-2.1.ia64.rpm http://vault.centos.org/4.2/os/ia64/CentOS/RPMS/centos- yumconf...

Making Red Hat 3 Authenticate against AD Domain
I have a Red Hat 3 AS server I am trying to set Samba 3 up on. I want to use the homes function of Samba and I want user's to authenticate against my AD domain. I am having a problem making the server a member server of my domain. I tried using the smbpasswd command and got the error about trying net join for this action. Also, is there anything else I have to do to get my users to

WhiteBox 4 -> CentOS4.1 - Yum
Hi Is it possible to swap the yum.conf from my centos box onto my whitebox box and have the whitebox machine use centos updates through yum? CentOS seems further ahead and far quicker at roll outs than whitebox? thanks

64-bit ISO Burning Failures
...ect, the machine is definitely 64-bit, and even when I insert another OS, like Fedora, or Whitebox, it works fine. Is there something i'm not doing, or doing wrong when burning these 64 bit CD's? I'm in a colo facility and would really like to leave here having converted a bunch of my WBEL and FC boxes to 64-bit Centos. Any help would be much appreciated. -karlski

TDM400 lost after reboot
...No such device or address (6)" To make it work again I have to shut down, remove the card, reboot so kudzu will remove the config. shut down again, put the card back in, reboot, now kudzu see it, I choose "Ignore" and then it's working again (until the next reboot). I'm on WBEL 3.0 and the card is not sharing is IRQ. Is anybody else having this problem ? When kudzu see it (as a Jens Schoenfeld Intel 537), what should I choose ? Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening ? Thanks

Using Centos
We need to resell systems that run commercial software on Linux. We were using Red Hat ES 3 originally. But we later realize that we cannot redistribute RHES without paying them huge subscription fee because of the trademark. I came across CentOS from WBEL mailing list. This looks like a godsend to me. I have some questions regarding CentOS. I would appreciate it if someone can provide me the answers: 1. Can I use your package to install a machine for resell? Is there fee involved? Do you have any EULA that I can get? 2. I believe it is RHES ba...

partition table Cent4RC1
...table error when trying to use ghost8 to create an image. I was considering putting Cent4 on a ProliantDL380, FC3 installed on that machine but wouldn't boot up, stuck on Grub. I had FC2 on the Proliant but when FC2 went to the 2.6 kernel, it hung up on the Nash prompt. So I ended up putting WBEL on that machine. I'm still evaluating what OS I want to finally put on there. Looks like Centos3 or a BSD. So my question is, does anyone know if RH will ever put the 2.6 kernel in RHEL3? I'm not getting a lot of warm fuzzies anymore from linux, since the 2.6 kernels have come out. I can...
