using veritas dmp with ZFS (but not vxvm)
We have some HDS storage that isn''t supported by mpxio, so we have to use veritas dmp to get multipathing.
Whats the recommended way to use DMP storage with ZFS. I want to use DMP but get at the multipathed virtual luns at as low a level as possible to avoid using vxvm as much as possible.
I figure theres no point in having overhead from 2 volume manages if we can avoid it.
Has anyone done this? Whats the best method?

ZFS and VXVM/VXFS
We are looking at the alternatives to VXVM/VXFS. One of the feature which we liked in Veritas, apart from the obvious ones is the ability to call the disks by name and group them in to a disk group.
Especially in SAN based environment where the disks may be shared by multiple machines, it is very easy to manage them by disk group names rat...

Question: vxvm/dmp or zfs/mpxio
Hello experts,
My client is thinking about changing one of their servers running Solaris 8 (NIS Hub to mention something) to a server running Solaris 10.
The question that i have given is to check the differences or if you wish the status/stability of changing VXvm with DMP (Dynamic Multi Pathing) to a system with ZFS and MPXio. I have made my share of RTFM but not come any closer to an answer. So now i am turning to you guys!
Is ZFS/mpxio strong enough to be an alternativ to VXvm/Dmp today? Has anyone done this change and if so, what was your experiance?...

device alias
Hi. I''d like to request a feature be added to zfs. Currently, on
SAN attached disk, zpool shows up with a big WWN for the disk. If
ZFS (or the zpool command, in particular) had a text field for
arbitrary information, it would be possible to add something that
would indicate what LUN on what array the disk in question might be.
This would make troubleshooting and general

Can DTrace display non-instrumented function argument counts and types?
Is it possible to use DTrace to display the number of arguments and their types for userland or kernel functions that are not explicitly instrumented or documented by their authors? We''re talking about functions provided by Veritas VxVM/VxFS and the like, and for example, we might want to try tracing I/Os from App => VxFS => VxVM => ssd driver to see where I/Os get aggregated or broken up. But without being able to determine function signatures, it will be very hard to even begin such a process.
It would seem that this...

Odd behavior of NFS of ZFS versus UFS
...he behavior that I am seeing is a little perplexing.
The Setup: I have Sun Cluster 3.2 on a pair of SunBlade 1000''s connecting to two T3B partner groups through a QLogic switch. All four bricks of the T3B are configured as RAID-5 with a hot spare. One brick from each pair is mirrored with VxVM 4.1 with a ufs file system on top of the mirror. I have mirrored the other two bricks via a Zpool. I have configured an HAStoragePlus resource for the datadg VxVM disk group and another one for the hazfs Zpool. Both are a part of my single nfs-rg. All machines are connected via 100MB switches.
I...

How to bind the oracle 9i data file to zfs volumes
...it fails with the error:the space of "/devices" is insufficient.I
think this is because above character device files under
"/dev/zvol/rdsk/ora_pool" are link file to point to "/device" node, not
the particular device file.
Compared with the raw volumes which created by vxvm:
# ls -l /dev/vx/rdsk/oradg/controlfile01_200m
crw------- 1 root root 283,99000 Apr 7 22:51 controlfile01_200m
It''s a individual character device file, not the link file, this is the
difference between zfs volume and vxvm volume.
Please help to provide solution, any helps are muc...

zfs in san
...ill handle the hardware raid it is still advisable to create
a zfs mirror on the host side to take full advantage of zfs''s self
healing/error checking and correcting.
is this true ?
Additionally I am wondering how the zfs mirror will handle a backend disk
failure on the Symmetrixs ?
with vxvm disk failures are transparent and nothing needs to be done on the
host side.
Will this be the same with zfs ? or will zpool replace commands need to be
run ?
Thanks

HA-NFS AND HA-ZFS
We are currently running sun cluster 3.2 on solaris 10u3. We are using ufs/vxvm 4.1 as our shared file systems. However, I would like to migrate to HA-NFS on ZFS. Since there is no conversion process from UFS to ZFS other than copy, I would like to migrate on my own time. To do this I am planning to add a new zpool HAStoragePlus resource to my existing HA-NFS resource group. T...

storage type for ZFS
The paragraph below is from ZFS admin guide
Traditional Volume Management
As described in ?ZFS Pooled Storage? on page 18, ZFS eliminates the need for a separate volume
manager. ZFS operates on raw devices, so it is possible to create a storage pool comprised of logical
volumes, either software or hardware. This configuration is not recommended, as ZFS works best
when it uses raw physical

device name changing
Hi.
If I create a zpool with the following command:
zpool create tank raidz2 da0 da1 da2 da3 da4 da5 da6 da7
and after a reboot the device names for some reason are changed so da2
and da5 are swapped, either by altering the LUN setting on the storage
or by switching cables/swapping disks etc.?
How will zfs handle that? Will it simply acknowledge that all devices
are present and the pool is

rename zpool
Hi,
I have two questions:
1) Is there any way of renaming zpool without export/import ??
2) If I took hardware snapshot of devices under a zpool ( where the snapshot device will be exact copy including metadata i.e zpool and associated file systems) is there any way to rename zpool name of snapshotted devices ?? without losing data part?
Thanks & Regards,
sridhar.

ZFS versus VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU
Hello experts,
We have a large implementation of Symantec Netbackup 6.0 with disk staging. Today, the customer is using VxFS as file system inside Netbackup 6.0 DSSU (disk staging).
The customer would like to know if it is best to use ZFS or VxFS as file system inside Netbackup disk staging in order to get the best performance possible.
Could you provide some information regarding this

# devices in raidz.
for s10u2, documentation recommends 3 to 9 devices in raidz. what is the
basis for this recommendation? i assume it is performance and not failure
resilience, but i am just guessing... [i know, recommendation was intended
for people who know their raid cold, so it needed no further explanation]
thanks... oz
