WIN95 OSR2.1 problem solved
...oduced some network improvements which made it impossible to connect to Samba without using encrypted passwords. There is a way-around for NT4.0 (SP3) by changing a registry entry. This has been published by Microsoft in their knowledge-base. With WIN95 OSR2.1 and the vredir patch (vredir.vxd and vnetsup.vxd dated June, 2nd 1997 or later) the behaviour is very similar to NT with SP3. I could not find any hint from Microsoft, so I had to try on my own. If you want WIN95 to work with unencrypted passwords, you have to change the registry as with NT. However it is a different key to change : HKEY_L...

SAMBA rejecting passwords from Win98 clients - the fix
...using encrypted passwords and recompile SAMBA, and there are notes about this at the SAMBA website. Or one can switch off the encryption on the Win98 client by editing the registry. We have tried the latter and it works. Run regedit. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Vnetsup Install the file ptxt_on.inf found in the tools\mtsutil directory of the Win98 CD. It's a short file so I reproduce it here: ; Decrypt.INF ; Copyright (c) 1993-1995 Microsoft Corporation [version] signature="$CHICAGO$" [DefaultInstall] AddReg=Enable.Plaintext [Enable.Plaintext]...

WIN 98 - Plain passwd?
i'm looking for an answer to the problem WIN98/samba-connection. It shows the same failure as shown by WinNT unless the change of Registry to EnablePlainPasswd. Is there an answer where the entry "EnablePlainPasswd" should be by WIN98? Enable encryoptedPasswd in smb.conf brought no solution. Thanks an many greetings Lothar M?hlbauer Lothar.Muehlbauer@iiv.de

passwords win98
If samba isn't authenticating win98 clients, esp. if you get a password request for IPC$, try editing the win98 registry. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSup and add a new DWORD entry. Name it EnablePlainTextPassword and set it to 1. The capitalization of VNETSup may be different but the rest is exactly as I found it on my system. After a reboot of the win98 machine, I could browse all the samba shares. Larry Collier

Windows98 & SMB
I have a question about Win98 and Samba. Is there a registry fix similar to the WinNT plaintext passwd that needs to be performed? Win95, and WinNT can see Linux via Netbios, but the same machine, running Win98 cannot see the Linux box. I am running the most current version of Samba. The WinNT box can see the 98 machine fine. Does anyone have any experience with this? Please let me know if

WIN 98 password problem
Hi! I'm new on the list, so please, be patient with me! I have a problem for wich I can't find the answer in the FAQ. Until recently I was running a 16 PC-s network with SCO OpenServer 5.0.4 and Samba 1.9.16p11 on the server and mixed clients (Win 3.11 to Win 95 OSR2). The users on the network have access to a PUBLIC directory on they own user directories on the server without

A question ...
Hi, I'm running windows 98 on my workstation and there're couple of unix boxes around, they're BSDI, SOLARIS which are all configured to run SAMBA. One strange thing is that everytime I try to get into my unix home dir under win98 workstation, I will be asked for a password, but no matter what password I put in, I won't be allow to go in. That didn't happen before under

SAMBA question on Windows2000.
...guess there must be something wrong with the password authentication methods. I read the Win95.txt and another WinNT articles in the samba pack but have trouble to find both the REG keys it mentioned. There is no such a sub-hive called 'Rdr' as the NT articles mentioned. nor one called 'VNETSUP' but there do exist VxD hive. I don't know what wrong i have done wrong. When i click the ICON stands for the linux box, it showes me a dialogbox saying that "The credentials supplied confict with an existing set of credentials", using "Net View" returns "Acc...

Logging in from Win98
...few Win98 boxes I'd like to connect, but I can't log in - I get refused at the IPC$ share. I can log in if I use rhosts, however I don't want to do this for security reasons. The key is in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ VxD\ VNETSUP\ It's a DWORD value EnablePlainTextPassword=1 Any hints? Both new machines are Win98 rev 1 and I can't say I'm too impressed with this OS. Eddie.

printer server of samba
Dear All: I have a problem about the printer server of samba. I instlled samba on IRIX 6.5. When I print file from PC, it asked me passwd first and any passwd is not valid. I change the /HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Service/Vxd/VNETSUP and add DWORD value as 1. Then after I enter my passwd, it does not show error information, but I still can not get anything from printer, somtime I can see the printer task from printer status, somtime it is nothing. Anyone advices will be deep appreciated. Have a nice day, Ye Meng

Windows 2000 Passwords
Hello, My question is the same as "Windows 98 Passwords" in your Samba FAQ replacing Windows 98 with Windows 2000. What is the registry to be modified to enable Plain Text Password with Windows 2000 ? I tried HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP as in Windows 98 and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rdr\Parameters as in NT4 but none work. Nasty Samba Locking Problems
We recently committed to replacing our Netware server with a Samba server running on an old SPARC box (using RedHat 6.0). This seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I'm wondering... We have two labs of PCs (each of 16 machines, all running Windows 95) and we use PC-Rdist to ensure that the hard disk images on the PCs are kept fairly clean and up-to-date. The master disk images are

Windows 95 connection problem.
I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem that's driving me potty! I have a network at home of various flavour of Wind*ws and a Mandrake 8.1 Linux box. After much trial and error, I have set the sytem up so I can log on to the network from WIn NT, Win 2k, Win 98 - but, no matter what I try, I cannot get a Win 95 machine to connect. I have installed the vrdrupd.exe file on the Win
