split-plot design?
Dear R-gurus, We are planning an experiment to test if plants produced by selfing are less fit than those produced by outcrossing. We have plants from three different alpine valleys, picked randomly among all the possible valleys. In each valley, we have a number of individuals, also picked at random. seeds from this individuals were brought back to the green house and sawned. when they flowered, five of the flowers were selfed and five outcrossed. the number of seeds produce...

Local numbers to Victorville/Apple Valley, CA
Hey all, I am in the High Desert region of southern California, USA. I was wondering if any of the SIP providers offer numbers serviced out of the following Verizon central offices: Apple Valley (Apple Valley CO/APVYCAXF) Apple Valley (Desert Knolls CO/DSKNCAXF) Victorville (VTVLCAXA) Adelanto (ADLNCAXF) Hesperia (HSPRCAXF) These are the COs which offer prefixes which are local calls from my home. I don't believe there are any facilities-based LECs in this area, which is why I asked...

Understanding nonlinear optimization and Rosenbrock's banana valley function?
...(Wiley), especially for its key insights regarding parameter effects vs. intrinsic curvature. Before I spent time and money on several of the refences cited on the help pages for "optim", "nlm", etc., I thought I'd ask you all for your thoughts. ROSENBROCK'S BANANA VALLEY FUNCTION? Beyond this, I wonder if someone help me understand the lessons one should take from Rosenbrock's banana valley function: banana <- function(x){ 100*(x[2]-x[1]^2)^2+(1-x[1])^2 } This a quartic x[1] and a parabola in x[2] with a unique minimum at x[2]=x[1]=1. Over the...

...rect syntax. The script below will create a toy example. The new wide data should have a column name for each unique entry in the "fame" column. Under each column should be either the appropriate weight or na, if there is no match. Thus, the end product should have column names: valley plot trt 18w 16iso 12:0, etc. Here is the toy script for the starting data in long form: dat <- data.frame(fame = gl(4,1,10, labels = c( "18w", "16iso", "12:0", "16w")), valley = gl(2,6,10, labels = c("H", "M")), plot = gl(...

Peak finding algorithm
...here. Not knowing of any, I have written one myself*, but I thought I'd ask to see what's out there. Basically, I have a 2-dimensional data set and I want to identify local peaks in the data, while ignoring "trivial" peaks. My naive algorithm first identifies every peak and valley (point of inflection change in the graph), then shaves off shallow peaks and valleys based on an arbitrary depth parameter, then returns whatever is left. This produces decent results, but, again, I'd like to know what other implementations are available. (* source available on request)

OT: Replacing Venerable NAS
...from cache can fill it. - L2ARC and ZIL upgrade options, which are intermediary caches between RAM and disk. Again, this helps you to keep that gigabit pipe full. - They?re serious server-grade machines, not borderline flimsy boxes competing largely on price. Built in and supported from Silicon Valley, not China. :) - iXsystems sponsors FreeNAS and FreeBSD (via PC-BSD) developers. Does your alternative choice of NAS provider sponsor open source developers? - Those latter two points mean you can actually call them and get someone on the phone who knows what they?re talking about. Smooth line in graph
Hi, I?m trying to get smooth curves connecting points in a plot using "spline" but I don?t get what I whant. Eg.: x<-1:5 y <- c(0.31, 0.45, 0.84, 0.43, 0.25) plot(x,y) lines(spline(x,y)) Creates a valley between the first and second points, then peaks at 3rd, and another valley between 4th and 5th. I?m trying to get a consistently growing curve up to the 3rth point and then a decrease like with SigmaPlot spline curves or with Excel. I tried with different spline arguments and also lowess and lo...

OpenSSH_4.3p2 on AIX ssh-agent does not work
...system call received a parameter that is not valid. Running "sshd -d" was not very informative, but actually printed the same errno results. When reconfiguring each client for login WITHOUT ssh-agent, logins are once again successfull, & all is well as peace reigns once again in the valley. However, our ssh-agent users are VERY loyal & they want their ssh-agent working again in their part of the valley! How can we fix this? Please advise. -mark- --------------------------------------------- -=<{ Mark Geoffrey Smith }>=- IBM Special Events Web Hosting mailto:masmitty a...
