USB Disk
I put a new server together with CentOS 4. This server is doing a number
of functions including ntp, mail, and web server. I had a USB drive
plugged in and it was working great. I could access it at /media/usbdisk
and I copied lots of data to it.
I felt the server was "complete" so I wanted to move it. I shut it down,
moved it, etc. Everything is ok, except that I cannot access the usbdisk
now. If I plug it into my laptop (FC4) I can access it without any
problems.
When I plug it into the serve...

USBDisk question
I have an external USB drive, and when mounted, it was /media/usbdisk.
When I recently tried my rsync backup, a usbdisk1 had been created...I
guess by the auto-mounting (when the disk is turned on).
Is there a way to remove the usbdisk1 and set it up so that the
auto-mounting will use usbdisk? Or should I just leave it be? I needed
to change my command line f...

chgrp problem
I'm using a comand like
rsync -av directory /media/usbdisk/
to backup to a usb device (on a Fedora 5 machine). I'm getting 100s of messages like
rsync: chgrp "/media/usbdisk/file" failed: Operation not permitted (1)
and then at the end
rsync error: some files could not be transferred.
How do I fix this? Why is rsync trying to chang...

Boot USB:SATA:Partition4 from USBstik?
I want to be able to make a USBbootStik for my laptop, as I repeatedly
did for the now stolen PC.
I've got a copy of the required 2009, Slackware13 partition, saved to a
USBdisk. And I've located the 175-line: <make bootStik script> .
Of course just "chroot"ing Slak13, won't allow <make bootStik>.
But why can't someone here, provide the info to make an equivalent
bootStick from StikBooted TinyCore64 which already
uses: /boot/isolinux iso...

USB Pendrive automounting
My USB Pendrive gets mounted everytime I put it on the USB port (/dev/sda on
/media/usbdisk). This behaviour is the desired.
Now I want the OS to automaticaly include the mount option
iocharset=iso8859-1 everytime it mounts it.
Is there a way to tell haldaemon (or other software) do this, instead of
hand-editing /etc/fstab ?

USB DIsk and mount point
Hello.
I use Centos 4.1 When I inserted my usb 2.0 disk for the first time it
created the mount point /media/usbdisk just fine. Which I used to mount
the disk. But as soon as I used it in another computer (winxp) when I
took the usb back to centos the mount point had become /media/IOMEGA
(yeah it's an iomega driver) but then as time goes by, the mount point
every time the disk is used else where the mount...

Usb disk no longer shows in GUI
I have a USB disk and when I turned it on in the past, it's icon would
appear on my GUI Desktop. Now it is no longer visible. In terminal
mode, if I do a cd to /media/usbdisk, all of my data is there.
What am I missing here?

Help With Installation to USB Stick
Recently, I was able to create a workable Centos 4.4 "Live USB" on my 1G Lexar Firefly pendrive using the steps in http://linux.web.psi.ch/livecd/usbdisk.html. At the moment, it is doing its job, so I probably won't focus too much more on it. One thing that is annoying, although doesn't cause a problem is that on powerdown and reboot, the cd rom drive ejects - of course, there is no CD in it!
My ultimate goal is to get a standard, updatabl...

simple incremental backup woes. solutions?
...y for rsync to rename directories.
The situation is as follow:
every night I backup my samba dir with this command:
rsync -ab --suffix=-`date +%F-%H%M` --filter="protect *-[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]-[0-9][0-9]-[0-9][0-9]-[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]" --delete --numeric-ids --stats -h /home/samba/ /mnt/usbdisk
as you can see, I simply rename the files deleted with the date they've been found deleted, hence providing a protect filter for the files with a date at the end (as you might imagine the machine serves windows clients).
Obviously (!) when a directory is deleted on the source dir, all the file...

PXEboot large image creation
...) starting from a usb disk image. The
usb disk works fine when used to boot the machine.
-dd of the usb drive and using the resulting image does not work.
- dd if=/dev/zero of=smalldos.img bs=1024 count=2880
mkdosfs smalldos.img
ms-sys -f -6 smalldos.img
mount -o loop smalldos.img /mnt
cp /media/usbdisk/* /mnt
then using smalldos.img to boot via pxeboot does not work either.
Can anyone suggest the proper way to get this working ? All I want is a
pxeboot image that will start ghost8.
Thanks

Creating Syslinux UEFI usb boot
...ller with configuration files for that hardware.
This works fine with normal Syslinux boot, but I want to get it working for UEFI boot as well.
I found?efi64/efi/syslinux.efi and efi32/efi/syslinux.efi in the installer source, copied them and named them respectively?BOOTX64.EFI and?BOOTIA32.EFI in USBDISK:\EFI\BOOT.
These were also the original names that the ESXi installer uses for it's UEFI boot files.
However when using the efi files that the ESXi installers ships with, it skips syslinux.cfg and runs directly to boot.cfg (vmware specific file).
In my setup of the regular bios boot usb insta...

LiveCD on USB won't boot
HI,
I tried to build my own liveCD on USB-device. I've formatted my
usb-stick:
# mkdosfs -F 32 -n usbdisk /dev/sda1
Then I copied the iso-image to my stick:
# livecd-iso-to-disk CentOS-5.5-i386-LiveCD.iso /dev/sda1
After that I tried to boot with that new device:
# qemu -hda /dev/sda -m 256
But, then I become this error-message:
"Initial menu has no LABEL entries!"
The same shit happen...
