Samba4. Unable to join to client machines.
...'ve been fiddling around with
Samba4, using the (pretty nifty) howto at wiki.samba.org. I've followed
it through and provisioned the active directory, I've run all the tests
and everything seems good. Kerberos responds as it should, dynamic DNS
seems to be doing its thing (nothing untoward shows up with
samba_dnsupdate --verbose) and the system times are within a couple of
seconds of eachother, so as far as I can tell, I'm not doing anything wrong.
I have a pastebin showing what output I get from windows, plus the
diagnostics I've been able to think of here ->

Odd hang on a 5.6 system
...screen it was blank, machine was unresponsive to the keyboard, over the
network ssh and other daemons didn't respond but the thing has two
network cards and routing from one to the other was still working. So
the kernel was up and I suspected a dying disk. But smartctl -a revealed
nothing untoward. Didn't see anything significant in the log files at
the time. Logging had stopped when the machine hung.
The machine rebooted normally and has run for almost a week and hung
again with the same symptoms. Again rebooted, nothing untoward in the
logs and smartctl still OK. But shortly after...

Disappearing voicemail
Asterisk 1.2, Fedora Core 4:
When I leave a voicemail message, it writes the necessary files to the INBOX:
msg0000.gsm

When I hang up, the files are erased. There is no indication of anything
untoward in the logs:

high memory guest issues - virsh start and QEMU_JOB_WAIT_TIME
...han the 30s QEMU_JOB_WAIT_TIME
and so libvirt then most unhelpfully kills the barely spawned guest. Dan
said there was currently no workaround available so I'm now looking at
building a custom libvirt which sets QEMU_JOB_WAIT_TIME=60s.
I have two related questions:
1) will this change have any untoward side-effects?
2) if not, then is there any reason not to change it in master until a
better solution comes along (or possibly better, alter
qemuDomainObjBeginJobInternal
to give a domain start job a little longer compared to other jobs)?

But there would be nothing untoward about adding a few more RFC2307
attributes to what winbindd caches (specifically those that would give
nss_winbind all the information necessary to construct a full passwd
line), would there? Would the Samba team be receptive to such a patch?

Dovecot failing silently on startup
I'm puzzled... I'm running the Debian package of Dovecot 0.99.10.4 on a
Debian (testing) server, and it's basically doing nothing on startup for
an extended period. After a while (maybe 10 minutes or more) it all
suddenly starts working, all without logging anything untoward.
All the dovecot processes appear to start OK, and 'Dovecot starting up'
is logged to the syslog. If you telnet to an IMAP or POP3 port at this
point, it will successfully connect but there's no response (i.e. no '*
OK dovecot ready').
Nothing else on this server is failing i...

debugging really high network usage with no apparent cause
...ot;. quantifiably, some of the batch
(rendering, in this case) jobs that are running on the windows
machines are going much more slowly than expected--factor of 2-5x
slower than usual is a real killer when "usual" is 12 hours.
after checking on the machines and the server, i see nothing untoward
chewing up the CPU on either side--on the server, there are as many
smbd's as clients and they are splitting the CPU's evenly (server is a

high-end areca cards). the server sits at a load average of about 2

a few simple questions about upgrading an "official" centos 7 release
again, some fairly trivial(?) questions about working with centos
7.4, given my time immersed in fedora so i want to make sure i'm not
carrying over any bad habits.
first, is there anything untoward in updating an installed version
of centos 7.4 with a simple "yum update"? i'm well aware of keeping in
mind the goal of stability with centos, so am unsure what the
philosophy is of pulling in new updates as cavalierly as i do with
fedora. currently, "yum list updates" show...

added an 80 gig Seagate to the second IDE bus. There is also a CDROM sharing
the primary IDE bus with the main drive.
Up until quite recently the machine has had a single drive in it and been
performing flawlessly, no disk problems or anything of that nature (nothing
untoward in messages, not spontaneous reboots, etc.). I have performed a few
CVSups and make worlds over the last month to deal with security issues and
such and about two weeks ago I added the second Seagate drive to the system.
Shortly after adding the new drive (but also around the time of a CVSup)...

Inconsistent results from .C()
...The answers are consistent in the sense that I always get the same
answers from running the same command in the console. I have tried
inspecting the returned objects to see if the objects are somehow of a
different class than I expect, or are just being printed oddly, but
have not found anything untoward.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Robin

[LLVMdev] LLVM based Virtual Machine "Environment" idea sanity check.
...uter.
This is where I'm stumped... how can I use LLVM inside my "simplified
processing node," allowing it only access to my "virtual devices,"
getting it to run "as fast as possible" with as little possibility of it
clobbering the host computer should something untoward happen to the
LLVM code? I'm still sifting through the documentation and feel like
I'm 90% there to understanding out LLVM works as a Virtual Machine, and
not a Compiler backend or Intermediate Language. Or, if LLVM isn't my
"perfect match," where should I look?

I''m in well over my head with this report from zpool status saying:

pool: z3
state: DEGRADED
status: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data
corruption. Applications may be affected.
action: Restore the file in question if possible. Otherwise restore the
entire pool from backup.

R-beta: R-0.62.1
Due to a glitch with the CVS version management software (quite likely
my own fault), R-0.62.0 got shipped without the "tests" directory.
Apart from preventing "make tests" from working, it also has untoward
consequences for "make clean" and the like.
So there's an updated version in R-0.62.1.tgz in the usual places.
For good measure, there's also a patch file.
