installing R from the tar.gz file (I am using Linux, with R-patched, but I have

PAM error on openssh-2.3.0p1/HP-UX
Hi all,
I try to login from a Linux Box with ssh-1.2.27 to an HP-UX Server with openssh-2.3.0p1 using PAM. After a couple of login the HP-UX disables my account with the error message: Too many unsuccesful logins. It seems to me - and the logfile says it too - that the first attemt to authenticate myself via Password fails and the second attempt via rsa-key works. Now the counter of unsuccesful logins is added by one and after 5 logins I am disabled.
I use the ssh-agent technology with rsa-keys. The...

Very weird behaviour after moving from 32 to 64 bit..
...ing, but I can't seem to make Plat versus Zombies work, I managed to make Escape Rosecliff Island run (which I previously couldn't) from the external hard drive where I had put the games, but I couldn't make it run once I copied it on the Desktop.
Also, at times, when I (succesfully or unsuccesfully) launch a game and exit even after a couple of seconds I find myself "logged out" of the computer and all other applications running need to be restarted.
Any idea?
Should I just go back to the 32 bit version?

Are infix binary operators ** and ^ aliased?

After making a typo (reminiscent of FORTRAN 77, I guess) I found the

I have been unsuccesful in attempting to use R-WinEdt (I managed to get to a

I found the discussion in

Partial least squares.
Dear R-helpers,
I am looking, quite unsuccesfully, for a number of functions/packages.
Firstly, I am interested in a package for partial least squares. I have
found that there seemed to exist a package called pls, but which seems
not to run any more with modern versions of R. I have not been able to

gz netCDF files
Hello,
I am trying to access several netCDF files that are also zipped (via
gzip I guess) (and stored in a directory that I only have reading
permit)
I tried to unzip them using gzfile, gzcon, etc, and then open them
with open.ncdf (from ncdf package). Everything was unsuccesful.
I had no problem using the ncdf package with "normal" netCDF files
I would really appreciate any suggestion
Thanks

distributions
Is there a recent distro of linux that includes the kernel options needed to
run wondershaper?
I am trying to use Xandros 2.0 Desktop but the qos stuff is not compiled
in...and I have been unsuccesful in re-compiling the kernel.
I really want to use wondershaper and linux. Im afraid that I still too
much of a linux newbie to be able to make my own kernel and have it work.

able to host a song, have a link to click on it, and it doesn't have to be

I have tried unsuccesfully to share songs with people on different forums
using these three places. And now I'm desperate.
MySpace won't let me because it has to be original work. I put the idea to
Photobucket and they liked it, but chances are they're going to go the same
route MySpace went if they do it at...

Insufficient memory

Reached total allocation of 1535Mb: see help(memory.size)
My hard disk has more than 100 gigabytes available, I just have to increase the allocated memory - sofar unsuccesful. I've used the code:

When I then use the code: > memory.limit(size = NA) it returns: [1] 4094. But then when I run the code to produce the large grid, I still get the same error message as above.
How do I go about to increase the memory to the...

global optimisation with inequality constraints
...ogram does output the correct solution and optimum - the problem seems to be my choice of optimisation method.
Optim includes a global optimisation method, SANN, but it doesn't make sense to use this in constrOptim (see http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/e4/help/08/01/1328.html, also I tried it unsuccesfully). Is there another global optimisation method that I can use?

insert a text in panels, always in the same position (lattice, ltext, ?prepanel?)
...his obviously overlay the text to the points.
What I'm looking for is to write the text always in the same position
along the panels,
say in the middle of each panel
something like "ltext(x = 1.5, y = (ylim[2] - ylim[1])/2 )"
I tried to play with "ylim" and prepanel but unsuccesfully.
Thank a lot in advance
