Lag when playing freeware games
I switched to Linux recently and one of the biggest things I miss from Windows are freeware games such as Spelunky or Desktop Dungeons. So, I got Wine and downloaded those games, thinking they should run great and I'll be happy in Linux-Land. The problem is they lag an ungodly amount, making them unplayable. Spelunky is a lot worse than Desktop Dungeons, which I guess I could suffer through, but I think it would be better if they ran lag-free. The FAQ had nothing to say on this, so I figured I'd ask here. So, has anyone else encountered similar problems when runnin...

lmtp: Error: mmap failed with file ... dovecot.index.cache: Cannot allocate memory
Hello, I have a mailbox with an ungodly number of small messages in it. When new messages are delivered lmtp kicks up an error like the one below. I tried raising the vsz_limit for lmtp but that didn't see to help. Any ideas (besides deleting 400k messages)? Thanks! dovecot: lmtp(6068, user at example.com): Error: mmap() failed wi...

quantum message
Hey all, When I run my scripts to manage my ungodly slow school connection, I get messages about the quantum size being small and suggesting a r2q change. What is this all about, and should I do anything? my link is effectively 45kBps and I have it set to limit to 42kBps. Thanks, Jay _______________________________________________ LARTC mailing...

MPEG video under Fedora 9
...multimedia files for testing would be useful. Is there such a thing anywhere?] I'm not clear also if Firefox has its own, different, set of File Associations? Or will it read those set by Fedora/KDE? I understand that the Fedora developers have a religious objection to telling us how to play ungodly video files, or even telling us where we can get this information. But it would be nice if a standard godless informant could be agreed on ...

[LLVMdev] MmapAllocator
...that system specific knowledge away. So the goal of this particular modification was to find ways to return large, one-time allocations that happen during compilation back the OS. For unladen-swallow, we have a long-lived Python process where we JIT code every so often. We happen to generate an ungodly amount of code, which we're trying to reduce. However, this means that LLVM allocates a lot of memory for us, and it grows our heap by several MB over what it would normally be. The breakdown was roughly 8 MB gets allocated for this one compilation in the spam_bayes benchmark, with 2 MB com...

Possible bug in nss_winbind with ad backend and rfc2307
...force Winbind not to use the Domain Users group as the primary group for the winbindd_getpwent process, so it returns the rfc2307 group attribute as it used to / should? Or do I have to redo all of my group file ownership/permissions on all of my servers to match "Domain Users" for some ungodly reason? Currently running Samba 3.4.3 on SLES 11.1, and authenticating against Windows 2003R2 AD, but I suspect this same bug/feature was introduced with the idmap changes in 3.30 and above so should apply to all versions above 3.30. I don't know if the same logic is being used in v4 winbin...

...BIC would yield, and have been playing with the step() function (on R-beta due to the factor.scope() problem that has been fixed in the patched and beta version). I am running this on a 64bit box with 32GB of RAM and tons of swap, but am hitting the memory wall as occasionally memory needs grow to ungodly proportions (in the early iterations the program starts out around 8GB but quickly grows to 15GB, then grows from there). This is not due to my using the beta version, as this also arises under R-2.2.1 for what that is worth. My question is whether or not there is some simple way to substantiall...

Rsync via ssh hangs on same file repeatedly
Hi all, I'm having problems with an rsync via ssh process hanging during transfer. The basic problem, (gory details to follow): I've set up a machine on my LAN to act as the receiver and have two (soon to be more) remote servers transferring files via a script. It seems as if certain files are causing the transfer to hang. These are different files on each of the sending machines,

LVM hatred, was Re: /boot on a separate partition?
...The gotcha is that it's obscure enough that you won't find nearly as much documentation or help when you arrive at DR, what to do. And anyone who lurks on the linux-raid@ list knows that a huge pile of data loss comes from users who do the wrong thing; maybe top on the list is they for some ungodly reason read somewhere to use mdadm -C to overwrite mdadm metadata on one of their drives and this obliterates important information needed for recovery and now they actually have caused a bigger problem. At the moment, LVM RAID is only supported with conventional/thick provisioning. So if you wa...

acts as nested set
...I''m working on a screencast building a threaded forum and nested set comes close but is lacking a few items for this project. First, all the documentation I can find restricts a nested_set to one root node, and a threaded forum would have many roots. Also, without a ton of fancy sql or an ungodly amount of db calls, it doesn''t track the depth. Is my understanding of nested sets correct? I created an acts_as_threaded to get around these "limitations" which performs well for this scenario, just curious if nested_set could also have been used if I had a better understand...

Xen clock drift
Hello All, Consider a CentOS-5.1 Xen server (2.6.18-53.1.4.el5xen) hosting two domains running CentOS-5.1 (2.6.18-53.1.4.el5). One domain has a fairly accurate clock, the other domain has a clock that gains ungodly amounts of time, roughly one minute every two or three minutes. For a fix, one suggestion is to run this command in DomU: echo 1 > /proc/sys/xen/independent_wallclock This didn't change anything. As an experiment, I wrote a script to call ntpd -q, sleep 60, and repeat indefinitely....

White Noise on TDM22B FXO Channels (newbie)
...ally have a TDM22B that passes the wctdm Freshmaker register test (fix: disable ACPI in BIOS). In the meantime, I had set up an SPA-3000, and had that routing my PSTN line to * quite nicely. When I move this line to an * FXO port, is works very irregularly. About 40% of the time, there is an ungodly blast of white noise in the voice stream that wouldn't go away after reloads or restarts, and restarts with driver reloads. Putting one second wait at the front of the dialplan seemed to help, but not fix the problem. Even when there is no white noise, the voice stream drops huge chunks...

CentOS 4.4 on mini-itx
Hi, I have a EPIA mini-itx board that I have been running Fedora 4 on. I want to install CentOS 4.4 on it since FC4 is no longer supported. The install goes fine but when I reboot the machine after the install I get errors like the following: hda:<4>hda: dma_timer_Expiry : dma status == 0x21 There are other errors about not being able to access the disk and eventually the kernel panics.

slightly OT: opinions on best webservice implementation
...sage starts with STX, fields separated by FS/GS and the message ends with ETX/EOT and a checksum. Very simple, fairly compact, and doesnt'' take much processing power to parse. Transactions are also fairly fast due to the low overhead. Now compare that with something like soap, which uses ungodly amounts of cpu, sends a lot more data over the wire, and is slower by a large margin. Straight xml with something like REXML is better than soap. Quite a bit faster and a lot less cpu intensive. Then there is the good old regular cgi parameters. That''s how transactions are sent to ou...
