messing with ...
I'm looking for advice on manipulating parameters that
are going to be passed through to another function.
Specifically, I am working on my version of "mle",
which is a wrapper for optim (among other optimizers).
I would prefer not to replicate the entire argument
list of optim(), so I'm using ... to pass extra arguments
through.
However:

recover data on usb drive
Hi gang
I just did a really stupid thing...
I did fdisk and removed the ext3 partition on my 500GB external USB drive,
thinking I was working on a usb stick instead. ugh.
then I did 'mkdosfs' on it. ugh ugh.
Before messing with it any more at all, what good ideas can you all
suggest for trying to get my data back?
Please don't tell me it's all gone (though I"m afraid it is).
this was a backup from a Lacie 2bigNetwork that's off for rep...

ugh, continued ldap madness, cont'd
After a brief stint offlist (thanks Bradley), I'm closer to getting
SMB/LDAP working but now am encountering something very odd, which he
suggested I bring back to the list for "further evaluation". :-)

Ok, I found the checkbox I forgot to check to make the disk image a
proper size. I have a new disk image of wxruby-0.2.1-osx-panther (same
code, different file) that is only 1.5 Mb in size. Would you like that,
or should I leave it as is?

"break" breaks _outer_ loop -- ugh!
It appears that "break" will break from the outermost enclosing loop not
the innermost loop. Is it a bug or language feature?

Ugh, Does Interfaces not work?
...ond DMZ on it, one thing led to
another, and Now the campus browser list appears in network neighboorhood
at the main office, and three other employee's houses..... I had
firewalled off port 137-139 a very long time ago, so I find it hard to
beleave it, but I guess samba got the browse list through broadcasts.
Any advice that any of you all can give me regarding cleaning up this mess
and getting rid of the eight domains being listed and passed around some
odd 80 boxes on an ipsec network?
BTW, My roommate and some friends have expressed intrest in being able to
print to my two printers....

WinXP. Ugh.
I'm sitting here tonight trying to get WinXP to map a printer on a Samba share.
First off, one thing I find disturbing is that XP seems to be aware of
Samba servers. When I open a window to one, it says on the window bar
"Samba 2.0.7 (nameofserver)" *shudder*.
Anywho.
I'm trying to map to a printer, and it seems to take forever and a week to
come up. I've managed to map

[Bridge] [RFC] bridge kernel API change
.../class/bridge/brX/stp
set bridge priority - /sys/class/bridge/brX/priority
set port priority - /sys/class/bridge/brX/ports/ethX/priority
set path cost - /sys/class/bridge/brX/ports/ethX/cost
get fdb entries - /proc/net/bridge/brX
Other alternatives:
- Use just ioctl's
- Use just /proc (ugh) or sysctl's (double ugh)
I expect that for 2.6 the kernel will accept (but warn) the old ioctl
interface. The new utility will not generate the old ioctl's
it would only work with new interface...

Ugh on new bios.
Just so others know. On my EVGA motherboard the option to boot
removable media didn't work on my usb flash drive with syslinux on it.
Yesterday I tried updating the version of syslinux and seeing if that
would wok. Frustrated with it not working I moaned and groaned and my
brother decided to look for options in the bios that I might have
missed. He couldn't find anything. But I decided to

AstriCon videos: a question of method

collection methods, and might be perfect EXCEPT.... Their main
limitation right now seems to be that they limit videos to 10 minutes,
which clearly doesn't work for our longer presentations. I could
"patch" them together in multiple 10-minute sessions, but... ugh. UGH.
There are other video sites out there - lots, actually. I could spend
hours digging through them all, or hopefully ask here on the list and
have some people give me prior experiences based on their expertise
with hosted video solutions.

Ugh - half connected Win 7 machines to Samba 4.1.18 AD
I have been at my wits end now since Sunday trying to debug an issue
that occurred when I tried to update from sernet-samba-4.1.18 to
sernet-samba-4.2.2 on my small network. I have one administrator account
and two user accounts which I will call account1 and account2. Before I
updated I was able to login into any of 3 Windows 7 Professional boxes
and 5 linux boxes running CentOS 6.6 using

smbclient 3.5.6 potential bug: 100-character filenames not extracted properly from tar

I have come across a problem with smbclient 3.5.6 when I use the tar 'x' feature.

win98 browsing problem across VPN subnets
I have just setup a VPN connection three sites using IPCOP.
Everything seems to be talking ok, apart from browsing the network neighborhood. There are no NT/Win2K/XP servers running on any of the sites, all sites are just running win98 pc's using tcp/ip. I have tried configuring all PC's to be on the same workgroup and setup sharing, but still each site can only see the pc's
