That pesky udial.wav again...
...o sneakernet in a tarball of
libcurl to get it to build :-( ) and started testing it out on the range of
quality levels, side by side with lame using it's range of vbr quailty modes.
Overall, it sounds pretty good, but I haven't really tested a good range yet,
as I ended up starting on udial.wav... vorbis handles it ok up to quality 3,
but from 4 onwards (presumably a high frequency cutoff is removed) there are
very obvious artifacts, and they continue to be present all the way out to
10.0. Lame handles this a lot more gracefully - the sine sweep is cut of
until about V2 or 3 (but...

udial.wav problem
I was doing some testing with RC2 and I noticed that RC2 doesn't
encode past 19kHz with this clip (-b256 and -b350). There are no
problems with this clip like it was before, but this clip contains
signal past 19kHz which is audible as a faint high-frequency hiss -
and that hiss is gone in the encoded file since RC2 cuts off at 19kHz.
I think that -b256 and -b350 should encode at least up to

applaud.wav sounds worse in 1.0?
I've been running through a collection of hard to encode samples that the
lame developers use, and others, doing ABX testing at various quality levels
looking for my personal sweet spot. Last time I did this for RC3 I found that
most samples where pretty transparent around the 3.5-4 region (my ears aren't
that well trained, and I don't want them to be :-), but this time I noticed

test with some files that bugged vorbis beta4.
grace.wav - the right channel is still a bit watery, and I think this
can be seen visually on spectral analysis as dropouts.
5551234.wav - oggdrop couldn't encode this file, it kept crashing.
This is the clip that exposes clipping artifacts.
udial.wav - this killer clip is almost transparent (there are no
horrible clipping artifacts anymore). The only artifact is in the
second string of tones - they sound a bit blurry/watery.
bassrumble.wav - sounds fine!
horn.wav - there's still a small amount of noise/fluttery added. Maybe
the bitrat...

ReplayGain support for Vorbis
Hello all,
I'm glad to announce to you that Vorbis now has full
ReplayGain support. If you're not familiar with ReplayGain,
take a look at www.replaygain.org. The main features are:
a) all songs play back with equal loudness
b) removes the need for normalization
c) allows for clipping prevention
Using it is very simple. Get a compatible decoder (ogg123,
XMMS and WinAmp all support it
