Centos podcast on FLOSS weekly
If you've ever wondered what Karanbir Singh looks like, check out this
week's (142) video podcast at http://twit.tv/floss. I'm only partway
through the audio version (will finish on the drive home) and haven't
heard anything that would be surprising to people already using Centos
yet but it's a great presentation and something to recommend to people
who aren't

git .gitignore vs exclude file
I am a bit confused about the different purpose of each.
I think the .gitignore file belongs in the root of my project and is
project specific, but that also seems to be the reason for the .git/
info/exclude file
what happens if they conflict? which one wins.
What is standard practice?
My exclude file looks like this
# git-ls-files --others --exclude-from=.git/info/exclude
log/*.log
tmp/**/*

R ``literal'' comand
I know I am luddite when it comes to list-based languages, such as
R. But, even these beasts must occasionally want to access objects
at a literal level. For example, to a naive twit like me, x<--print
(y) should deposit in x a literal print out of y; that is, x should
contain the *results* of applying the print method to y (e.g.,
something like a tab (or space)-delimited flat

VoIP Users Conference Recordings
Hi,
Alistair Cunningham of Integrics was our guest yesterday. We talked
about Integrics new product Geons, a suite of software for building
large-scale distributed enterprise applications. The recorded session
is now available here:

The extremely rare John Todd was sighted (and heard) at this event.

Question About Rails.cache and find method.
...d(@user.city_id) but that is ugly.
So my question to you guys. What are the smart people doing? What is
the right way to do this?
I look forward to getting feedback! :-)

ClearOS rebuild
This week's FLOSS Weekly interview is about ClearOS (audio/video at
http://twit.tv/floss168). Apparently they have taken the CentOS
developer's frequently given advice to go away and do it yourself and
will have a 'ClearOS core' release that is their own rebuild from Red
Hat sources that will be the base for the ClearOS enterprise
distribution instead of relying on CentOS as

Samba (old) and shared printers on MS Win 2003 SBS
...ease. Now his stuff can't reach any
shared printers.
My first thought was that old versions of Samba don't know about Active
Directory, but I don't know 1. if that's true or 2. if the presence of
Win2003 server SBS necessarily implies AD.
My second thought was that the arrogant twits just didn't bother to give
his box required permissions to use the shared printers.
Who'd design a business network with printers on the workstations anyhow?
Whatever, any ideas where to begin?
Can someone tell me how recent a version of Samba he could upgrade to,
given that he's s...

Alternative to cPanel
Hello all,
I'm looking to setup a new CentOS box for a buddy of mine who
wants to do hosting on a server via CoLo, Years ago I whipped up a CP of my
own on a Debian box he colo'd running a basterdized qmail/tinydns and custom
built httpd/mysql/etc (I was young). It worked ok but time to move on and I
don't have time to maintain all those packages. I also don't have

Samba performance on FreeBSD and other platforms in a 'Normal' world.
...e issues with samba on FreeBSD. Before I get into the gory details.
I'll outline some research I've done. As well as try to show that the people
who ask for help and are curious as to why they are getting poor performance
from their file server are not A. Crazy, B. Inexperienced and / or C. Twits.
(Mind you there is every possibility that I could be covered under any or
all of these listings particularly C. If so please produce reasonable proof.
Don't just take the easy route and blame it on bad hardware.)
I've been using FreeBSD since 1.05. It is my Unix of choice and rarely am...

Sanity, Manners and Shorewall Support
Hello Everyone,
This morning I received a personal email from a recent poster asking
"Why is Mr. Eastep so mean?". The post went on to explain that I had
responded abruptly to the person''s request for help and asked why I
wasn''t more helpful to people attempting to understand something new.
Good question.
Over the last nine months, I have been struggling to deal with

SELinux threads, cynicism, one-upmanship, etc.
After reading through the various SELinux threads, I really became quite
perturbed. I mean, really quite perturbed.
As an IT Director (and the entire IT department, currently), if I were hiring
a sysadmin I know for a fact that someone whose first response to a question
on why something doesn't work is 'turn it off' would not get a job here.
Neither would a sysadmin with as much

Named update for RH 4.2 exploitable?
Someone I was speaking with this evening claimed they have installed the
latest named rpms yet they are still getting exploited daily and being
hacked. Do the latest rpm''s for the named 4.9.x stuff fix all the root
exploits or is this person just an idiot who probably has holes elsewhere in
the system?
