ttyv for local only?
I get this in my security postings. Jun [undisclosed time] [undiscl.] login: 2 LOGIN FAILURES ON ttyv2 Jun [undisclosed time] [undiscl.] login: 2 LOGIN FAILURES ON ttyv2, qmaild As it turns out, I'm not running qmail :) And if I did, it would definitely have a nologin shell. But that's beside the point- I have had a perception that ttyv was for local/console logins, and that just

Strange things going on with 4.8
...ith gdb yet. 4) X11 (or KDE) locks up very often, only a hard reset brings the OS back. 5) The absolutely strangest thing I've ever seen happened today: The console screensaver was running, and when I pressed a key, everything locked up (I could not even ping the box). The view was locked to ttyv0, the cursor disappeared. When I tried to switch to another terminal (with ALT + Function key), it either beeped or did nothing. It was completely random, sometimes it beeped, sometimes not. I have already tested the memory (no errors). There weren't any problems with 4.6-RELEASE on my old...

FreeBSD 5.0 will not boot
Hi everyone, I released turned to FreeBSD simply because I am discouraged with windows and there security scheme (did you guys see the document microsoft wrote about how to stop windows from sending out info about your computer onto the net? it's freaking 250 pages, and that doesn't cover all the xtra exploits that can come in your computer). Anyways, I recently tried 4.8 rc2, and it

cvs pserver sig11 on 4.8-R
Hi all, We recently moved our CVS repository from a 4.6-STABLE machine to a brand new 4.8 install, on another identical machine. The server runs cvs in 'pserver' mode, for remote access by various Windows/Solaris/Linux/FreeBSD clients. We pretty soon noticed that the cvs server process was occasionally crashing on sig11 (ie. a segfault). The only evidence for this was in the message

Panics and freeze using age0
I'm running FreeBSD 7.1-PRERELEASE over Asus P5Q motherboard. Such board comes with an nic requiring age0 driver. When the nic is under load, such trasferring big amount of data over gigabit connection (let's say some gigabyte backups), the computer hangs, sometimes with panic, sometimes freezing. Before that i was using an Intel nic with em0 driver and 7.0-Stable#2.. and that
