[homes]
Hi there.. during an installation of Samba (don't recall the version, maybe
2.2.6) on RH 7.2 recently it automatically created the smb.conf file and
this contained basic [global] and [homes] shares.
I've just installed the latest Samba 2.2.7 and it does not create smb.conf
(it says in the instructions that it won't so I'm not surprised) but... the
[homes] entry in the smb.conf

Authoring a HOWTO
I am in the process of authoring a Samba-LDAP-PDC HOWTO for Mandrake
users that will allow cross platform ( Linux / M$ ) network user
authentication. Lastnight I ran
rpm --rebuild --with ldap samba-2.2.7a-2mdk.src.rpm
and it produced a list of packages that I needed to install in order to
compile this version of samba. I did so but I neglected to write down
the list. I did the install of

C'mon guys. Get some virus protection.
Anyone who is smart enough to be on this list is smart enough to get
some proper virus protection.
However it may be the case that some cannot afford commercial liscenses
and/or are not aware of the free virus checkers that are available.
Since this *is* a list issue, I don't feel that it is off topic to ask
for folks to publish various means for such. I did notice that some

Adding a machine; I think I am onto something
Parameters are:
Samba 2.2.7a PDC setup with LDAP includeing posix authentication for Linux.
OK, the tutorial I've based my setup on is the Mandrake tutorial found
at http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/ldap-auth.php
Works great for autenticateing Linux from LDAP but it is really sparse
on the Samba side of things. Esepcially when it comes to adding machine
trust accounts.
So anyway I

Mdk 9.1, samba-LDAP 2.2.8a/3.0b3 (LDAP) can't print to z53
I've not been able to get Samba to print to a Lexmark Z53.
If I call it a Z52, the driver uploads (to where, I have no idea so I
can't check it) but I still can't get anything out of the printer.

Add User Trouble on SMB LDAP PDC 2.2.7-1.1mdk
I am having a problem getting the system to automagically add a machine
account to the LDAP database.
add user script = /usr/share/samba/scripts/smbldap-useradd.pl -w -d
/dev/null -g machines -c 'Machine Account' -s /bin/false %u
Now the above works fine from the command line but will not execute from
the server. When it is added from the command line I can join the
domain with no

Samba-LDAP PDC - Disjoint uids required for different ou's?
Specifically what I am asking is, if I have a computer named ralph$ who
is uidNumber 678 in ou=Computers and I have a user who is uidNumber 678
in ou=People, will this cause problems? Must the different sets of
uidNumbers be disjoint acrossed different ou's?

Samba-LDAP - Getting Computer accounts to live in ou=Computers
OK, here is the deal. My system spins like a top with one exception.
I would like to store Computer accounts in ou=Computers and get them out
of ou=People. I've tried simply makeing this the ou that Computers are
added to but then the XP clients cannot seem to see them. Changeing
this is likley to be easy to do and incredibly hard to find the specific
details of how to do it. I know

Known error - missing user directories
I know this is a well known problem but I would dearly love to know what
causes it. I mess with the ldap (I'm using an ldap backend) settings
and I wind up without any user directories.
Anybody?

Q'n for HOWTO - setting ldap ssl = off
Just to be sure, will setting 'ldap ssl = off' affect anything other
than the communications between the samba and ldap servers?

Samba LDAP - bug in ldapsync.pl
In the course of correcting directory references for Mandrake in
smbldap-tools I came acrossed the following:
samba-2.2.7a/examples/LDAP/ldapsync.pl
on line 72 we have:
> $ntpwd = `/usr/local/sbin/smbencrypt '$oldpass'`;
On Mandrake this would be:
> $ntpwd = `/usr/sbin/smbencrypt '$oldpass'`;
Except that I can't find anything by that name (i.e.

smbldap-tools badly messed up
These scripts should function much the same as the binarys shouldn't they?
1. If you add a user, the users group must pre-exist. No adding users
and groups simultaneously.
2. If you do add a user the gidNumber is set to the default specified in
/etc/samba/smbldap_conf.pm NOT the users group as specified on the
command line with "-g". This HAS to be a bug.
3. The option to leave

Profiles - Slow logoff
OK, I've finally got my Samba-LDAP PDC operational.
Everything seems to work fine but it takes an age to save settings when
logging off. What can I do (i.e. what would one normally do) to speed
things up? I do have a huge volume of files under ~/profile/My
Documents Will this affect the logoff time?

Where can I read about redirecting My Documents and Application Data?
I've got my Samba-LDAP PDC set up but I need to know how to redirect the
My Documents and Application Data. I have figured out how to redirect
My Documents on the client side but it really needs to be done from the
server, if possible.
Can someone point the way to this information?
Thanks,

Setting up Samba-LDAP for 3.0a on Mandrake 9.1
I could use some help figureing out what specifically the differences
are between Samba 3.0a and 2.2.X in regards to LDAP. Partucularly when
it comes to the schemata. After I've got it figured out I will see that
the MandrakeSecure HOWTOs are updated to include this info to help
Mandrake users who want to try a Samba 3.0 DC. Note that as yet the
beta version is not available in an RPM

LDAP passdb backends. What's the difference?
I've not be able to find in the docs where it describes the differences
between ldapsam ldapsam_nua etc. etc. I don't have access to the man
pages and I've checked the online documentation also. Something has
been going wrong in my config and I think a better understanding of
these may help.
I do know that ldapsam_compat is supposed to be backward compatible with
the old LDAP

Need help understanding smbldap-tools and user records
Why is it that when I use "/usr/share/samba/scripts/smbldap-userad.pl -a
Administrator -g dadm" that the group doesn't get changed to dadm?
Instead it stays set to the value specified in $_defaultUserGid. Also,
I must say that I find the default of *not* adding a group for the user
very counter-intuitive.
What exactly is the difference between gidNumber and primaryGroupID in a

Samba-LDAP too imature for production?
2.2.7a
It seems that samba-ldap is still to immature for any kind of production
environment. The provided Perl scripts simply do not work with the 'add
user script' setting or if they do, then there is an an undocumented
bug, issue, etc. The scripts work fine from the command line but
aparently samba won't execute them properly. Since I cannot expect my
users to understand
