rsync over ssh - lockups with pipe()
...() instead of pipe(). Just remove "#define USE_PIPES 1" from near the bottom of includes.h does the trick. The test program, along with instructions for use and an explanation of some of the pipe() bugs in various OSes that make this change necessary is available from ftp://samba.org/pub/tridge/misc/sshtest.c In past releases of rsync I added various buffering tricks in rsync which reduced the likelyhood of this problem occuring, but didn't eliminate it completely. I have removed those tricks in rsync 2.4.0 so you may find an increase in the number of bug reports regarding rsync over...

Mounting folders with spaces in their names
I still have not been able to mount a folder called New Stuff in smbfs. I have tried: mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge, password=foobar //MP3/New Stuff mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge, password=foobar //MP3/New_Stuff mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge, password=foobar //MP3/new_stuff Nothing seems to work. The computer is called MP3 and the folder I want to open is called New Stuff. Its right on the root level. I...

Active DNS registration on join realm?
Dear Samba members, I am wondering if on joining a realm (with security=ADS), samba 3.x server gets automatically registered with MS Dynamic DNS server. My test with Samba 3.0.14a on linux did not reveal any such capability. But may be because I did not use the correct option? I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance, -Arup Biswas

Samba4 reaches the "Susan" stage
...pment then see http://devel.samba.org/, checkout the code, and start reading. Having at look at the (incomplete) prog_guide.txt is a good idea. If you just want to see some slides on the design of Samba4, then there are some links to various talks I've given on my homepage at http://samba.org/~tridge/ I'd like to thank everyone who has worked so hard over the last couple of years to get us this far. It's been a long haul, but the results are well worth it. Samba4 is a great basis for future Samba development. In particular I'd like to thank the members of the Samba Team who have p...

[patch] user@host in AllowUsers
This is a port of a patch I contributed to ssh 1.2.23 in May 1998. I have missed the functionality after moving to OpenSSH so I have updated the patch and hope OpenSSH might accept it. The patch allows sshd_config to have lines like: AllowUsers root at localhost AllowUsers tridge@* AllowUsers guest at 192.168.2.* DenyUsers badguy@* etc. I found this useful for restricting users to only login from hostnames that they pre-arranged with me. Patch is against current cvs. Cheers, Tridge Index: auth.c =================================================================== RCS f...

AD group membership limits?
Hi, I'm running Samba 3.0.11 on RedHat ES 3 kernel version 2.4.21-15.0.4.ELsmp and have a quick question about AD group membership limits Am I right in assuming that Samba is limited by the group membership parameters (ie NGROUP = 32) imposed by the Linux kernel? Is there any workaround in Samba for this? At the moment if a user is a member of more then 32 domain groups they cannot access

rsync-2.5.6 build on Red Hat 8.0 fails
The packaging/lsb/rsync.spec file is broken as shipped: It has a "Sept" month (rpmbuild here takes only 3-letter month names), and RH gzips the manpages, so the %files list can't find them. I also added doc/README-SGML and doc/rsync.sgml to the %doc files. Patch follows. Thanks for all the good work! --- rsync-2.5.6/packaging/lsb/rsync.spec.orig 2003-01-28 06:28:35.000000000 +0100

Strange provisioning error - I really expect an answer
...n answer" and that will come, save some typing and please, do not reply with that. I've contributed videos to the comunity and material so that it gets tested more, but I have many unanswered questions. Like whe I tried dynamic updates, and tried to join a W2k8 server to samba4 domain, as Tridge, showed on his video he never got that "cannot determine if DNS server supports dynamic updates", it remains unsolved for me and unanswered. It'dbe nice to see how Tridge had his DNS setup?, did he run dhcpd on that same machine?, did he create dns zones manually?. I hope this time...

'path' entry and printing in smb.conf
Hi, Do I actually need a 'path' entry for each printer share defined in my smb.conf? Or is 'path' redundant in this case as the only relevance it has would be for the printing spool directory, which is defined by my /etc/printcap for all my printers anyway?? The man page for smb.conf seems to suggest that I do need a path entry, so should this be the same as the spool directory

Samba 1 vs. 2, locking and Windows Terminal Server Edition
On Samba 1.9.18p10 and previous versions, each of the multiple users on the same Windows Terminal Server Edition machine would get their own smbd process. With Samba 2.0.x (I'm currently testing 2.0.4b), this has changed so that every user on a WTSE machine uses the same smbd process. File ownerships are assigned correctly, but file locking does not work. If one user on a WTSE machine has a
