Linux traceroute (oddness & localhost memory-alloc)
...TRAQ, I'd still think at least some of the people on this list may have an interest in parts of the data below. Cheers. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 06:11:54 +0300 (EET DST) From: Ville <viha@cryptlink.net> To: bugtraq@securityfocus.com Subject: Linux traceroute (oddness & localhost memory-alloc) Hi. During a standard security-audit on a tad older Linux-system, I stumbled upon some oddities in traceroute that had a nasty feel into them. When I researched further into it, I found no obvious way of using the means to cause anything useful (audit-wi...

IPFW and icmp
I'm not a master of the internet RFCs, but I do believe icmp messages have different types. Now to enable traceroute for IPFW, I might put in a rule like this: ipfw add pass icmp from any to me However, how would I make a rule to limit icmp messages to just those used by traceroute? Can the messages be distinguished as such? A dynamic rule that exists only for the duration of a traceroute execution would be e...

traceroute misbehaviour on dual-home using -i or -s
...ault route and leads to an SMC router (192.168.9.254). Card eth1 (192.168.1.250) leads to a Linksys router (192.168.1.1). I''m not doing any NAT or PPPoE in the workstation - the SMC and Linksys handle it all. I know four commands that let you set an IP source address. Of the four, only traceroute misbehaves with this configuration: # nc -s 192.168.1.250 foo.bar # works out eth1 # mtr -a 192.168.1.250 foo.bar # works out eth1 # ping -I eth1 foo.bar # works out eth1 # traceroute -i eth1 foo.bar # misbehaves out eth0 # traceroute -...

Traceroute equivalent
Is there a traceroute equivalent in the VoIP world? I would like to see the route a call takes after it gets to the gateway. Basically showing all the hops until it reaches it's destination or PSTN termination. -Dave

Ping and traceroute...
Hi everybody, Right now, we are blocking pings and traceroutes to our website. But, in order for our members to test the connection when they are experiencing slow browsing, we are thinking about unblocking them... Are there still any security issues (flooding, etc...) in enabling them or is that an old problem fixed a long time ago? Thanks, JD

Ping/Traceroute problem in 1 of 4 links
...per then 1 ISP and a bigger link. 3 of 4 ISP I have no problems, but on the 4th ISP here goes my problem : I have a ''client'' whom also uses this ISP ( Telemar), when I try to ping from my ''client'' I never reach my machines (the firewall and a NATed server). If I traceroute I almost never reach them too. Below there are outputs from both commands executed from my ''clients'' linux box. I attached ''shorewall dump'' as required. Other points I tested : - trying to ping/traceroute an IP from my others 3 ISP works - if I remove my shorewa...

ping failure on dual-home using -I without default route
...dea why this second default route works or fixes ping. As I understand it, the second default should be completely ignored since the "ping -I eth1" should be operating using my table set up for eth1 addresses. Why doesn''t ping work the same way as nc and mtr? Help? (Aside: The traceroute command is completely unable to function in my configuration without any default routes defined, even using the -i and -s options to set the source address to either interface: # traceroute -i eth1 linux.org traceroute to linux.org (198.182.196.48), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets trac...

openssh-based file transfers (e.g. rsync, scp, ...) are running 40 (!!) times faster via IPv4 than IPv6
Servus Philipp, Unfortunately the traceroute(6) results are both more or less random. Sometimes traceroute "hangs" a while, wherever, sometimes traceroute6. Sometimes traceroute is faster, sometimes traceroute6. Not reliable. Your MTU question, tried as adviced: Maximum size for IPv4 is 1466, and max size for IPv6 is 1444. Exceedi...

icmp traceroute from dmz behind proxy-arp - icmp code 11 ?
hello there, im running a 3interface inet, dmz, loc. i have some public ip addresses. one public address is the router of the provider, the second one is the linux box running shorewall. all other public interfaces are on the dmz nic with proxy-arp. now whenever i do a traceroute (the dmz boxes are windows, icmp traceroute) the very first hop gets timeout/stars, then the router of the provider follows as second hop and everything else after that is ok. when i do a second traceroute directly after that, this doesnt happen, but the dmz ip address of the linux shorewall box a...

[patch] Raw sockets in jails
Although RAW sockets can be used when specifying the source address of packets (defeating one of the aspects of the jail) some people may find it usefull to use utilities like ping(8) or traceroute(8) from inside jails. Enclosed is a patch I have written which gives you the option of allowing prison-root to create raw sockets inside the prison, so that programs various network debugging programs like ping and traceroute etc can be used. This patch wil...
