Article for wiki consideration
I've recently documented simple use of a VServer with CentOS host and
guest. toracat@ said that it might be worthwhile putting on the wiki.
The present article is located at
http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/vserver.html
If it does get to the wiki, I would remove the fedora section and also
add a notice at the beginning of the article with dire warnings about
using a non-st...

Accessing Windows shares - mini HowTo
On the CentOS mailing list and Forums, I occasionally see questions
relating to accessing Windows shares. Thought I could share my notes
on this subject which I put together on a web page:
http://toracat.freeshell.org/centos/HowToAccessWin.html
It is a short practical guide. I would appreciate receiving comments
and suggestions.

Proposal: GDM login tips & tricks entry
Hi,
I propose to create an entry in Tips and Tricks - 5. Admin tricks and shell one-liners describing how to disable the user list in the GDM graphical login. I would draw on the info posted in this blog entry

Here it is. I am starting this thread for those who would like to

CentOS Forums
We have CentOS Forums here:
http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/
Akemi Yagi (toracat on IRC) and Fabian Arrotin (arrfab on IRC) are the
Forum Moderators.
There are a lot of posts there that I find helpful when doing web
searches ... but we could use more people answering questions there.
Also, we specifically need some people to answer questions concerning

installing CentOS, and also with RHEL 7 Server with GUI (since you get the
same kernel). Based on information from your bug list, I was fortunately
able to workaround the trouble with:

patched kernel addressing timekeeping issues under vmware
...nately this is not going to happen. It looks like the patches
will be in the RHEL 5.4 kernel. Using the patches provided in the
bugzilla, I have rebuilt the latest test kernel (-125) that is
available from http://people.redhat.com/dzickus. You can download the
patched kernel from:
http://centos.toracat.org/kernel/centos5/vmware463573/
I have test-installed it on a couple of CentOS-5 x86_64 guests. Still
too early to say anything about the clock issue, but so far so good.
If you get a chance to give it a try, please share what you find.
Thanks,
Akemi

5.2 driver for Marvell Yukon 88E8042 PCI-E Fast Ethernet controller
Hello,
I'm trying to install CentOS 5.2 on an HP 6730s notebook.
All's going well except for one little item -- the networking. Never
thought I'd have trouble with an Ethernet adapter, so I didn't even
check before buying this machine; it was cheap.
The adapter is a Marvell Yukon 88E8042 PCI-E Fast Ethernet controller. I
can't find a Linux driver for it except one that

System beeps in kernel 2.6.18-194
So, just today I noticed a problem with kernel 2.6.18-194 (CentOS 5.5) on several Intel DP965LT systems; the system beeps (such as terminal beeps) are no longer passed through to the external speakers. This is a problem because in our situation the boxes are distant from their monitor/keyboard, the system speaker on this motherboard is extremely weak, and there are no system speaker header pins

What happened to 6.1
Hi gang - Love CentOS - you guys to a fabulous job.
It has been a while since I saw any update...
I went to twitter.com/centos nothing there,
twitter.com/centos6 nothing there,
went to the qa calendar stuff nothing there.
Last I saw was something in September saying all
RPM's are built and doing ISO's. Then nothing.
I know the whole story about its ready when its ready and

Reporting for Duty.
Hello to the AdminGroup,
>From what I have been told (by a very reliable source (AY)), I should direct this for the attention of Ralph.
In the nicest possible way, Community members Akemi and Ned (aka toracat and NedSlider) have been twisting my arm to get me to agree to join the Wiki editors. Being susceptible to the right sort of persuasion, I eventually agreed.
Over the last few weeks I have been assisting in the updating of two out of the three Kernel HowTos and Akemi now feels I should finish this...

Marvell Yukon 8056?
Greetings list-
I''ve got a server ''in the mail'' and I see now on the specsheet that it has Marvell Yukon 8056 NICs onboard. Since I cannot seem to find a HCL for Centos 5 or RHEL5 to help verify, I''d like to know if it works ''out of the box'' on CentOS 5.x or is there additional work to make it function (properly)?
My searching has revealed

nx-3.5.0-1.el6.ay.x86_64.rpm and freenx-0.7.3-8.el6.ay.x86_64.rpm. When I
try to logon the desktop pops up but I get the little busy circle and it
never completes, I am unable to close the session or do anything to the
freenx window. Here is the odd, part, if I install the earlier versions
from toracat, freenx-0.7.3-7.el6.ay.x86_64.rpm and
nx-3.4.0-7.el6.ay.x86_64.rpm the session comes up and works fine,I can
exclude the updates but wondering if anyone has any idea of what I might
try to get it to work with the latest, thanks in advance.

Samba
Hi,
I recently found a need for me to setup a Samba share for some quick and dirty file copying. I already knew how to do this, but was wondering if it would be worth while to add it to the tips & tricks or howto section.?
Thanks!
