OT Windows policy question
...ng "Start Menu" and "Desktop" requires
a local (machine) security profile. I wouldn't know what that is.
Can anyone on the list please point me at a Microsoft Knowledge Base
url that details what this is, and how I can implement it using
mmc/Group Policy?

Samba and Windows ACL Issue
Hi all got a bit of and odd problem with ACL. Ive read up on a few bits in
the samba howto and read some threads on here about it.
Im not sure if this is a bug, something ive not done, doing wrong etc so
anyone that could shed some light on it that would be great.
Basically the windows box handles all user account processing and during
creating a script for all this it will attempt to change the

Anyone compiled Samba 3.0.11 on Red Hat RHAS3/RHEL3? Not "how", just
"yes", please ;) I'll get onto you by private mail if "yes", otherwise I
won't bother you.

Once again, thanks for a magnificent product that should cut down our
Windows (2000) administration appreciably (the Linux administration

goes wrong ;)

so much of lately.
Of course the shitt went through a zombie or open relay, of course it
was sent anonymously, but that's what forensics are for. The proper
authority will be keeping a database and ISP trail on the whole. That's
why I'm asking SANS.
Thanks!

Somebody had problem with long user names
...*does*
have to implement an up-to-date Samba/OpenLDAP solution. If he hasn't used
OpenLDAP earlier, this might take him a while (like weeks, took me many
months, couple of years).
Anyone who wants further info would do best to start a separate thread,
since this one is old.

Pam mkhomedir - Permissions
I would like to set special permissions (ACL) when pam autocreates my
home dirs in samba. I think i should use a script for that. My question
is: how can I make pam run a bash script after it creates the homedir?
Thanks

haven't asked IDEALX, no I haven't consulted anyone else than Billy my

usually is, if he gets food and petting regularly.

Password Generator
Can anyone suggest any apps/scripts for bulk generating passwords from
real names (e.g. jsmith from John Smith) that would check for duplicated
in an existing smbpasswd or passwd file and append a number to the
username (e.g. jsmith1, jsmith2).
Thanks

Sarbanes-Oxley headaches
Hi there,
With the new scrutinization by auditors on account policies and
auditing, how can Samba be SOX compliant?
Using 3.0.14a-sernet on Suse 9.1 - ldapsam
Specifically, a couple of things seem to be lacking:
1) Logon/Logoff times are not being recorded
The last logon time recorded in my ldap entries are pre-nt4 migration.
2) Do the Audit Policy values in user manager have any effect?

SIGUP? Losing Share
Hello,
I'm new to the list and pretty much a newbie to linux and samba. I'm
quick learner though. I have been losing my samba share upon ocasion
recently, below is a portion of the syslog from the time period that I
think is when the share goes down. A reboot of the server or a restart
of the smbd fixes the problem (....until it happens again)
I don't know what SIGUP is or why

same profile for all users
Hello list,
is it possible to have the same profile for some users (or a group of
users) without having to use a separate profile directory for each user?
I would like to set up a pre-defined mandatory profile for a school with
more than 1,000 students. Each student should have the same,
unchangeable profile. Is it possible to run it out of one profile
directory? If yes, how?
Thanks

Hello,
I've a Debian 3.1 box with Samba 3.0.9 acting as a PDC with OpenLDAP

The problem is this:
Yesterday suddenly a user from a workstation already joined to the
domain could not log on any more.
The log message was:
Workstation HPDX02$: no account in domain
Digging into LDAP I've found that the entry in the LDAP DB exists (I
