...out the subcode data as well, but unfortunately it puts this subcode data in the binary file it generates, thus meaning you can't use it as a straight audio file any more. I've put in a feature request on sourceforge to have it put the subcode data in a separate file. After ripping, I use toc2cue to generate a .cue file, and feed that and the audio data to flac. This is not really optimal, as toc2cue seems to do a pretty bad job of the conversion (leaving out such simple things as the ISRC, but I'm not familiar enough with the cue file format that flac reads to do better. So I keep the...

Can you send (or point me to) a copy? It's a simple patch. With apologies to the flac folks, here it is. Further abcde and cuefile discussions should probably find a new home... The first two changes add features to the cuefile output, but are not strictl...

...y pre-gap for track 1). - - Use cdrdao to extract a TOC file (cdrdao looks at the subcode and extracts more detailed index data than can be found simply in the disc's table of contents, which is what most cue generation utilities use). - - Convert the TOC file to a cue file (hacked version of toc2cue) that accounts for any pre-gap issues (track 1 not starting at 00:00:00). I'm working on hacking abcde to automate this process and not require a customized version of toc2cue, but I don't have a complete solution yet (not enough time...let me know if you want to help!). ...cussions about archiving CDs with flac prodded me to get abcde working again. I've filed a debian bug report with patches to the latest abcde that enable generating a toc file from the disc with cdrdao (rips CD-TEXT data and creates index points from subcode data). Combined with my patches to toc2cue, this is enough to rip even "problem" discs (track 1 doesn't start at frame 0) and wind up with (hopefully) enough data to re-create the original CD with great accuracy. The patches and more details on use are available via the debian BTS: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.c...

Cuesheets and metaflac
...ycle) is to rip the entire disc (including the pregap) and create a cue file with an INDEX 00 entry (which flac/metaflac will properly store/retrieve): TRACK 01 AUDIO INDEX 00 00:00:00 INDEX 01 00:00:32 The main problem is this requires hacked cuefile generation tools, as neither cdrdao/toc2cue, mkcue, or cuegen create cue files like this. Are there plans for flac/metaflac to support some sort of pregap indication in imported cue files for CD backup, or is there some other work-around I'm not aware of? Any pointers to how best to deal with "problem" CDs containing pregap w...

Archiving CDs w/ Flac on Linux (and subsequent re-encoding)
This must be possible; not sure how to do it yet. :) After facing the thought of going through my cd collection for a 3rd time for re-encoding, it occurred to me that I should just flac the whole CD and add a cue sheet, and then back up to DVDs. That way -next- time I need to re-encode to any format, I can handle ~1/20th the discs, compared to my whole cd collection. :) Wondering if

FLAC CD Archive
I have read some posts about using FLAC to archive CD collections and would like to get some feedback. I am torn between creating a bin and cue file with CDDB info and compressing that down with FLAC as a single file or the second method of ripping all the files out to wav and converting to FLAC and maybe saving the cue file in attempt to use it later. The first method I believe will pretty much

...ode data into account (via cdrdao). The first is easily accounted for in the ripping code, by hard-coding the start-track (but a more general solution would be to specify either zero as the start track, or a --whole-disc type switch to abcde), while I was dealing with the second issue by modifying toc2cue (*NOT* a particularly desirable solution, IMHO). Regardless, my just barely working setup to rip entire CDs to flac breaks with the latest abcde from subversion, and I haven't yet had time to get it running again. :( - -- Charles Steinkuehler cstein@newtek.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Ve...

cd archival (revisited/again)
...;m trying to do a good job, so i have a plextor drive and so far i've only found one ripper that supports the plextor perfect audio extraction - cdrdao driver=plextor-scan. can't beat it. you do 2 consecutive rips and md5sum's are the same. this means i'm stuck with toc files and toc2cue seems a bit orphaned. it created zero length cue files so i put a out.close(); in the appropriate place and now it works, but the cue file seems kind of minimal. i would prefer to transfer all the info to the flac file if possible. is there a cuesheet syntax document someplace? so next task is...

The format is fairly well documented in the manpage, and seems pretty stable to me. There's also a program called toc2cue that comes with cdrdao that would provide some information. (This is what I use to convert the TOC files to CUE files to make the cue sheets, though I seem to lose a lot of information when I do that.) cjs -- Curt Sampson <cjs@cynic.net> +81 90 7737 2974 http://www.netbsd.org Don...
