Custom kernel RPM/SRPM
...wan to build my own custom kernel RPM/SRPM. I thought about doing a "rpmbuild -bp" and change the options. Then a "rpmbuild -bc --short-circuit" and a "rpmbuild -bi --short-circuit". What's the correct way of doing this? Thanks in advance, -- Giovanni P. Tirloni http://blog.tirloni.org

Reply to ICMP echo request (type 8) on different (ethernet) interface
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi list, I have a weird (?) problem here on a setup running CentOS 5.3 x86_64 (and OpenVZ, and some home-brew L2TP daemons, RIPd, BGPd, etc). There's a (VE in OpenVZ speak) virtual machine that has two ethernet interfaces, seen as eth0 and eth1, respectively. Those live in VLANs, but it's not important here. The thing is that on eth1 the

what is zfs doing during a log resilver?
So, when you add a log device to a pool, it initiates a resilver. What is it actually doing, though? Isn''t the slog a copy of the in-memory intent log? Wouldn''t it just simply replicate the data that''s in the other log, checked against what''s in RAM? And presumably there isn''t that much data in the slog so there isn''t that much to check? Or

yum update -> [Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out
Trying to update a second CentOS box, I'm getting this error repeatedly: [Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out I'm getting this on every mirror and have gone through the list of mirrors more than a dozen times. Oddly, the RPMs I'm trying to upgrade I upgraded just yesterday without a problem on another machine on the same LAN with no problems whatsoever. I can ping mirrors fine. There

which script will run before and after network started
Is there a script which I can customize which will run before doing service network stop and a script which I can run after doing service network start I see that /sbin/ifup-local runs after each interface is brought up, but I cannot figure out which scripts will run after all the interfaces are brought up.

Monitoring OpenVPN TUNs with MRTG
I want to check some client OpenVPN TUN interfaces with MRTG running at my VPN server, so I have to specify their OID interface numbers in mrtg.cfg. The problem is, these numbers are dynamic, as they may change whenever OpenVPN restarts for any reason... so, how can I write stanzas such as Target[somehostvpninterface] : ifInOctets.X&ifOutOctets.X:public@ <SOMEHOST.IP> without wiring up

Diskdevstat

Lost zpool after reboot
Hello, I have a dual boot with Windows 7 64 bit enterprise edition and Opensolaris build 134. This is on Sun Ultra 40 M1 workstation. Three hard drives, 2 in ZFS mirror, 1 is shared with Windows. Last 2 days I was working in Windows. I didn''t touch the hard drives in any way except I once opened Disk Management to figure out why a external USB hard drive is not being listed.

WD caviar/mpt issues
I know that this has been well-discussed already, but it''s been a few months - WD caviars with mpt/mpt_sas generating lots of retryable read errors, spitting out lots of beloved " Log info 31080000 received for target" messages, and just generally not working right. (SM 836EL1 and 836TQ chassis - though I have several variations on theme depending on date of purchase: 836EL2s,

Anyway to ensure SSH availability?
I was having problems with the same server locking up to the point I can't even get in via SSH. I've already used HTB/TC to reserve bandwidth for my SSH port but the problem now isn't an attack on the bandwidth. So I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to ensure that SSH is given cpu and i/o priority. However, so far reading seems to imply that it's probably not going

Reboots when importing old rpool
I have a fresh install of Solaris 11 Express on a new SSD. I have inserted the old hard disk, and tried to import it, with: # zpool import -f <long id number> Old_rpool but the computer reboots. Why is that? On my old hard disk, I have 10-20 BE, starting with OpenSolaris 2009.06 and upgraded to b134 up to snv_151a. I also have a WinXP entry in GRUB. This hard disk is partitioned, with a

Year in log files
Hi, Can we display year in log files timestamp? We are being audited and the auditor wants to know when we apply certain patches. yum.log shows it, but it doesn't have the year. I can argue based on common sense, but it would be much nicer if the year is there. Example: Apr 12 11:41:25 Updated: krb5-libs-1.6.1-55.el5_6.1.i386 Apr 12 11:41:27 Updated: openssl-0.9.8e-12.el5_5.7.i686

Bind97
I notice that CentOS 5.6 release notes say that bind97 is now included. However, my CentOS 5.6 installations have bind 9.3. I'm guessing that bind97 is not installed by default, due to the possibility of config file breakage or something. It looks like you have to explicitly install the bind97* packages. I don't see anything in the release notes about how to handle the transition from
